Seattle Sounders at Chivas USA - Gamethread

Facing a team that fell well short of their goals for the season the Seattle Sounders have the opportunity to have essentially an intense scrimmage to prepare themselves for the coming MLS Cup Playoffs. It isn't that Chivas USA has been bad per se, just not mediocre enough to sneak in the playoffs. Their goal differential on the year is an even zero and plus four at home. Their relatively solid defense grants the Sounders an opportunity to finalize playing time decisions for the upcoming Western Conference Semi-Finals.

The Seattle defense though does have specific issues to work on in this game. Mistaken passes in the backline, attempts at offside traps and set-play lapses that have occurred recently must be stopped prior to the Playoffs. The Goats are good at crossing the ball and scoring (11 goals, +6 GD) which should help refine those points of need. They aren't a good set-piece team (9 goals for, +1 GD) but real practice is already better.

In the end this game is good for three things - permanent records of greatness, refining the few weak areas the Sounders have and staying healthy and fit. There's no lineup card, because so many different angles could occur for both teams. The projections would be less than guesses. There are small battles at two starting roles. Mike Fucito and Sammy Ochoa can use this match to show who gets the 60+ minutes starting (though that may still be a tactical choice), while Leo Gonzalez' and Tyson Wahl's 50/50 battle for starts has to be settled prior to the short Playoff run. At the end of the evening Seattle will know it's first round opponent.  Real Salt Lake v the Portland Timbers and FC Dallas at the San Jose Earthquakes will determine when and where Seattle plays next weekend.

The game is on KONG 6/16 and 97.3FM with Arlo White on the call at 7:30 PM

Seems like since it’s an away game and there’s literally nothing we can do in the standings we would see a lineup more like the Revs game.

Kasey's wearing a faded green New York shirt

During his pregame show interview with Arlo, so odd, guessing the rest of the shirt says something like “sucks” or “isn’t as good as Seattle” or something similar.

Nah, it'll be KC or NY.

KC has really fed on that new stadium and now they have it as a playoff advantage, and a properly motivated NY team can win it all, not to mention Philly is a tough out and still growing as a team, they’re so young.

by Thalas on Oct 22, 2011 8:34 PM PDT up reply actions

This vitriol makes zero sense

The last 2 MLS cupchampions were western teams that got seeded into the east. If they get the bye they have to beat the second-best team in the league home and away and best team in the league away to make the final, whereas they’re looking at something like 10th best team at home → 5th best team home and away → 6th best team away to get to the final in the East. Neither route is unambiguously better than the other, though I do generally come down on preferring to get the bye.

by Tohoya on Oct 22, 2011 10:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Format is different than prior years

The condensed route for wild card teams of 4 games in 10 or 11 days with 3 of the 4 being on the road guaranteed is a much heavier disadvantage than prior years, so again, stupid, stupid, stupid.

Last year Colorado won 3 games in 18 days and 2 of them were at home as there were multiple wild cards in each Conference, completely different format.

by Thalas on Oct 23, 2011 5:39 PM PDT up reply actions

They do get a game of guaranteed rest

It’s possible that they play their starters in SJ and still lose, giving them less rest than what they’ve gotten under the current scenario.

Conversely, they could start their reserves and still win in SJ, giving them the more extended rest they would want.

One in the hand is worth two in the bush. If Schellas is indifferent to seeding and only concerned about rest, he made the right call.

We’re at half so there’s commercials at the moment, here’s the link again.

Veetle is a popular streaming site so it probably wasn't hard

There’s often good streams there of all sorts, movies, sports, etc, Justin.tv has some decent streams sometimes too.

Is anybody else vaguely uncomfortable with the way Chivas are marketed?

They are so blatantly designed to be the team in LA for Hispanic fans. Which of course has a lot less money then the “native” LA Galaxy. Not to mention that both teams go to Home Depot, but have vastly different experiences.

I does feel off

Not sure if that’s because of MLS or if it’s just because Chivas considers it a lost leader marketing tool for the Mexican side

by blakec on Oct 22, 2011 8:39 PM PDT up reply actions

They've been trying to change that image this year

Prior to this year it was Hispanic everything, coaches, players, there was really a focus, it obviously wasn’t completely working, so they’re changing the direction by not being as xenophobic in their choices, hence the new coach and many players.

To answer your question though, as a half Mexican mutt myself, LA was obviously the glamor team, I can see an argument for what they attempted, but I hate xenophobia, so I couldn’t say I’d agree with it and I guess I could say yeah, it’s sort of odd.

If you watch advertising banner, they are almost all in Spanish.

One of them earlier was advertising something “imported from Detroit”.

There's some Safeco advertising in Japanese

It’s all about speaking to your demographic. But Chivas was doing it pretty aggressively in more than just the advertising prior to this year.

It's basically Mets/Yankees

One team spends a ton of money and has douchebag fans, the other is mediocre and has relatively nice fans.

I met a possum.

not really

They are owned by the Mexican team and the LA area is hugely hispanic, let alone first generation.

Time will tell if that’s not a biz model that works for them, but I have no problem with it. Anyone is free to go to the games.

On the other hand, I have always wondered why MLS doesnt try to field a Mexican side? Why not? Ciudad Juarez MLS team?!

When the average game has 2.5 total goals

An 8 goal game is definitely an aberration, and 6 goals for one team is also. I’m just stoked we scored 54 in 34 so far which is more than our allotted 1.25 per game.

Second time Fucito has gone off

and the offense took off. Sigi will be asking himself questions about this week.

by blakec on Oct 22, 2011 9:08 PM PDT reply actions

As so often when a Forward comes on late

The previous Forward has softened up and tired the defense, and a fresh Forward can mince them up. Switch the roles and I’d fully expect Fucito to be the one scoring.

by Thalas on Oct 22, 2011 9:09 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

Fucito especially is pretty bruising on defenders.

It’s not just the speed, he’s basically just a solid chunk of muscle. Combine that with the low center of gravity and his aggressiveness, and yeah…attrition.

by moyerLIVES on Oct 22, 2011 9:11 PM PDT up reply actions

This is exactly why you sub attacking players pretty much every game.

Fucito has been beneficiary of it in the past, and he has helped his subs out by pretty much constantly pounding on the defense.

You do all the work for us, Honey Badger, and we'll just eat whatever you find.

by mistuhp on Oct 22, 2011 9:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I hate not using a Forward sub with 20 minutes or so

But it’s not like we’ve had a dearth of on form Forwards to do it with. With every Sammy goal he is proving that he deserves to be in that top of the rotation for us.

by Thalas on Oct 22, 2011 9:15 PM PDT up reply actions

And then it will be Fucito going in against a tired defense

upon which the argument will flip. Honestly we need to compare Ochoa from the start of the match to Fucito from the start for it to be fair.

Props to Levesque tonight.

In all honesty he just like seeks to desperately pass immediately upon touching it, but on a couple of big runs he’s provided a smooth cog in the offense.

Not like that.

If you watch again, they were throwing the streamers into the penalty box en mass before the goal. I personally throw streamers all the time, but it’s at the start of the game, start of the half, or after the goal. I don’t throw them into defenders actively guarding the goal.

I am liking Ochoa

As a starting striker that is. He has the skills to play with this team and produce. He shows so much potential every time he takes the pitch. That guy has quality, Sounders will do very well with him.

Congrats to the FO for picking up yet another “throwaway”.

by AliasDictusTyrant on Oct 22, 2011 9:47 PM PDT reply actions

Well he wasn't really a throwaway

they did have to reach out and get him. Not to pick the nit, but do we really have any “throwaways”? Rosales was an established Argentine and Euro player who fell into our laps, Ozzie was a USL star, Ochoa couldn’t shake the bench in a much better league. I think all these guys are solid gets and less “throwaway”.

by B Money on Oct 22, 2011 10:01 PM PDT up reply actions

That is fair

My point was more why the other MLS sides did not pick Ochoa up. Everything I have seen since he has been a part of the Sounders is solid. It seems like a no-brainer and Seattle had to (nominally) stretch to get him.

It really makes me wonder, are the other MLS sides so clueless that they overlook this talent? No matter how you dice it, SSFC has had an above average ability to find talent.
