MLS Playoffs Wild Card Round Gamethread

The original plan was to have these two matches on the same day, but snowfall in Denver pushed the Colorado Rapids v Columbus Crew game back to tomorrow. We'll bump the thread for that one. Tonight's match should be more entertaining as preseason favorites New York Red Bulls travel down to Frisco, Texas to face off against the fading FC Dallas. If end of season form is an indication maybe Red Bull are the favorites. If being a complete team over the season is meaningful than Hyndman's men will take advantage of home field and get a win.

MLS is streaming tonight's game at 7PM. Yes, it isn't on TV, but their stream is free - small yeah.

Staff here have the first wild card game with as a slight Dallas favorit with 4 of 7 picking them. Tomorrow's game leans to the Western team as well with 5 of 7 picking the Rapids, though that will please a lot fewer of us. Of note, one writer picked Red Bull to win it all.

If you are watching the games, and really if you love the sport how could you not? Ok, there's plenty of reasons not to, but this is a game between two teams that have the potential to be quite good.

On Wednesday the Red Bulls beat FC Dallas 2-0 to advance and face the Los Angeles Galaxy in the next round.

Gah. Why did I pay for Match Day Live.

Three teams are always blacked out (SEA, PDX, VAN) then this national broadcast blackout stuff too.

I do hope it improves next year as I do not have cable.

Random Question

Thinking about a potential LA NY matchup in the next round and remembering the Sounders travel stories earlier this year – how they usually have to fly commercial coach.

Do Henry, Beckham and the like REALLY fly commercial coach with the team? I can’t imagine they possibly would but if they didn’t that’s just a nametag to the rest of the team: Douche.

by RalfZakuani on Oct 26, 2011 7:32 PM PDT reply actions

The clubs are restricted in the number of charter legs they can schedule

I have no idea what, if anything, the league does about players paying for their own travel.

by CarlosT on Oct 26, 2011 7:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Business Time

I wonder if they don’t put them up in business class sometimes. I remember someone happened to be on a flight with the Sounders a couple of years ago and they said they saw the coaches and Ljungberg was up there with them. No clue if that was a regular thing or not.

That's too bad

After one of NY/LA eliminate the other, Seattle will eliminate the remaining team, thus ruining Garber’s big market plans.

by chrisperry1983 on Oct 26, 2011 8:07 PM PDT reply actions

That would hold true

If you just looked at the domestic market TV ratings but I would imagine that Henry or Beckham – more important than big market LA and NY per se – would draw in tons more fans to an MLS cup final.

At least ESPN would bill it exclusively as that.

How much of a presence do the Red Bulls have in the area?

by CarlosT on Oct 26, 2011 8:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I think Garber is very happy with ANY LA/NYRB match up in the finals

The fact that it is a Home and Home double?
Priceless for Coast to Coast attention. Top TV markets are good for the league.

I was in New York earlier this month wearing my jersey (when it is game day you represent). I had a new yorker who had watched the USOC final say he liked my jersey and “that Cuban guy” on the Sounders who got the second goal….we had a nice little conversation in midtown of Manhattan. New York notices good soccer.
