MLS Playoffs Wild Card Round Gamethread
The original plan was to have these two matches on the same day, but snowfall in Denver pushed the Colorado Rapids v Columbus Crew game back to tomorrow. We'll bump the thread for that one. Tonight's match should be more entertaining as preseason favorites New York Red Bulls travel down to Frisco, Texas to face off against the fading FC Dallas. If end of season form is an indication maybe Red Bull are the favorites. If being a complete team over the season is meaningful than Hyndman's men will take advantage of home field and get a win.
MLS is streaming tonight's game at 7PM. Yes, it isn't on TV, but their stream is free - small yeah.
Staff here have the first wild card game with as a slight Dallas favorit with 4 of 7 picking them. Tomorrow's game leans to the Western team as well with 5 of 7 picking the Rapids, though that will please a lot fewer of us. Of note, one writer picked Red Bull to win it all.
If you are watching the games, and really if you love the sport how could you not? Ok, there's plenty of reasons not to, but this is a game between two teams that have the potential to be quite good.
On Wednesday the Red Bulls beat FC Dallas 2-0 to advance and face the Los Angeles Galaxy in the next round.

What crazy person picked the glorious Red Bulls to win the Cup?
Have that lunatic committed.

Hey, it worked for RSL and the Rapids
AS MLS has shown repeatedly, once you’re in the playoffs, anything can happen.
Except this year NY still has to go through 2 of the best teams to get to the cup
instead of 2 mediocre teams like Colorado and RSL
Yeah, that could break the streak
But then again, you just need to get hot at the right time.
Gah. Why did I pay for Match Day Live.
Three teams are always blacked out (SEA, PDX, VAN) then this national broadcast blackout stuff too.
I do hope it improves next year as I do not have cable.
Sports.
That aspect won't improve.
Blackout rules are contractual.

Watch the playoffs for only $5 and whatnot. What a load of crap.
The Seattle Sounders are just reDQulous
You can watch Colorado vs. Columbus tonight!
Amazing no national stations picked up that game. It’s double the bunkering/hard fouling/punt-n-pray fun!

I bet this is what Garber was hoping for when he announced this playoff structure.
Riveting game that both fans and coaches are taking very seriously.
Come on Red Bulls
Beat these clowns out of the wildcard round and then go on to beat LA for us please…
Above average officiating and announcing.
Now if they could just fill the two seats in NY’s bench and all those seats in the Dallas bleachers.
If it's not the Emirates cup...
…Hans Backe isn’t all that interested.
I'm finding it hard to root for NYRB.
Definitely against my instincts.
Same here
I almost immediately throw up in my mouth thinking about rooting for a team on the east coast. But tonight, I will power through it.

Halftime thoughts:
1. Kinda boring
2. Lots of pressure from FCD until maybe the last 10ish minutes or so, then RBNY seemed to wake up

NW Peaks Cave Ridge Rye is making this game tolerable
otherwise Shea’s mullethawk and FSC’s love affair with Marquez’ ability to misplace balls would make me ill.
I hate all things NY so I’m reluctantly supporting the Burn
Shea has a lock on silliest hair in MLS
Kyle Beckerman is a close second, though.

Random Question
Thinking about a potential LA NY matchup in the next round and remembering the Sounders travel stories earlier this year – how they usually have to fly commercial coach.
Do Henry, Beckham and the like REALLY fly commercial coach with the team? I can’t imagine they possibly would but if they didn’t that’s just a nametag to the rest of the team: Douche.
The clubs are restricted in the number of charter legs they can schedule
I have no idea what, if anything, the league does about players paying for their own travel.
I've heard they can upgrade on their own dime
Apparantly FL10 used to do it quite often.
The SAH Links Guy
Business Time
I wonder if they don’t put them up in business class sometimes. I remember someone happened to be on a flight with the Sounders a couple of years ago and they said they saw the coaches and Ljungberg was up there with them. No clue if that was a regular thing or not.
Dallas may end up rueing all these missed opportunities

You're not allowed to bleed on the field.
It’s in the rules somewhere I’m sure.
Technically true
If you’re bleeding, you have to leave the field and get it stopped. Your team will play down a man unless you get subbed.
Straight red against the Red Bulls
Pretty darn clear, too.
I wish the MLS protected players more
This game probably would have been watchable if David Ferreira was playing.

the way he spun it was annoying too in that he basically blamed Dallas for even trying at champions league as if it was a decision to take mls less seriously

And while im on the subject
Shame on bringing washed up big names over to sell tickets. In the long run it prevents the league from being taken seriously.
My official take after my first year of converting from a lifelong European soccer fan to a big MLS fan
Ah, the magic of being the last team into the playoffs
It’s a Midas touch in MLS.
And the 10th placed team from NY/NJ now gets to host a playoff leg
in the “western” bracket. Silly playoffs.
Yeah... great reward for LA winning the SS.
You get to travel to the far corner of the country for your regional table!
That's too bad
After one of NY/LA eliminate the other, Seattle will eliminate the remaining team, thus ruining Garber’s big market plans.
but seattle v philli is expected
to have the highest ratings.
That would hold true
If you just looked at the domestic market TV ratings but I would imagine that Henry or Beckham – more important than big market LA and NY per se – would draw in tons more fans to an MLS cup final.
At least ESPN would bill it exclusively as that.
Emergency transfers
As soon as the final is set, one would go to each team.
I don't know if New York is really a "big market" for soccer
How much of a presence do the Red Bulls have in the area?
For some reason it still seems to be Garber's wet dream to have an LA/NY matchup in the final
by chrisperry1983 on Oct 26, 2011 8:11 PM PDT up reply actions
I think Garber is very happy with ANY LA/NYRB match up in the finals
The fact that it is a Home and Home double?
Priceless for Coast to Coast attention. Top TV markets are good for the league.
I was in New York earlier this month wearing my jersey (when it is game day you represent). I had a new yorker who had watched the USOC final say he liked my jersey and “that Cuban guy” on the Sounders who got the second goal….we had a nice little conversation in midtown of Manhattan. New York notices good soccer.
Nos audietis in somniis, Nos audietis in altum: You will hear us!
and by finals I just mean this playoff format
Nos audietis in somniis, Nos audietis in altum: You will hear us!
I wonder
If the sounders get past RSL, does this help? LAG and NY will have to travel to the other end of the country for home and home.
I think so
The alternative is was that LA would have played Columbus or Colorado.
I’ll take my chances with Red Bulls – even though most of the match tonight they really looked like they didnt give a shi
Even if ...
… the Red Bulls don’t pull off the upset, the two cross-country plane trips next week could take its toll on the LAG.
Sounders can’t take advantage until they take care of RSL, though.
Karma
Yeah throw that last game to get the easy path in the four seed
To be fair, they would've been decimated by Seattle.
So it’s just lose-lose for Dallas.
Nothing can stand in the way of the last seed in MLS
Dallas’ mistake was placing too highly.
