MLS Playoffs: Sounders at RSL Leg One - Gamethread

Two leg aggregate series in the MLS Playoffs favor the team with fewer games played. This has become known around MLS media circles as the "Curse of the CCL." But Real Salt Lake shouldn't take any solace in the fact that they've played fewer games. Their First XI has played in 313 more minutes than the likely lineup put forward by the Seattle Sounders. Sigi Schmid rotates his lineups and more frequently uses his substitutes than most CCL participants. The Saturday night match will not be decided by fatigue, instead by the performance of the players on the pitch.

Seattle's offensive force is quite diverse. Either five or six starters have scored six or more goals in all competitions. There are also bench scoring threats in Roger Levesque and the other second forward (Ochoa/Fucito). Salt Lake played 6 fewer games on the season, but the offense lacks diversity even accounting for that - only three players netted more than four goals. Diversity isn't the only way to look at the way the two teams differ. One is a classic diamond 4-4-2 while the other a much more fluid attack where Fredy Montero plays in both midfield and forward bands. Sigi's side is more difficult to defend, but Kreis holds an edge on the evening.

Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah holds a strong reputation for a home field advantage, but its strength faded this season. Seattle has a win there, as well as wins on the road internationally in tougher conditions than will be faced this evening. With no away goals rule any draw or win is a positive for the Sounders, while a loss would diminish their hopes of advancement. There's a strong chance that this is a game that is decided in either the first 15 or final 15 minutes. The Sounders are better than the Claret & Cobalt when going up a goal and downright amazing fighting back from a trailing position.

The game is on FoxSoccer (national) and 97.3FM with Arlo White on the call at 7:00 PM

If he's diving

and it’s getting called. He’s not scoring. He sometimes over commits to embelishment rather than trying to score.

Yep, they do.

Mostly they carry the Fox Soccer Channel games. I’m based in Iraq so I’ve watched a lot of MLS on Al Jazeera Sport.

But the MLS games tend to be on Al Jazeera Sport 7, Al Jazeera Sport 8, or similar. Not the main channel. So I seriously doubt I’ll be so lucky here.

by AlexM on Oct 29, 2011 6:17 PM PDT reply actions

By the way where was the talk of Ochoa when we were all whining about the 3rd striker dilema a couple months ago. Had we not already acquired him by then? Who missed the boat on that one. (Besides all of us – someone who should have known )

by RalfZakuani on Oct 29, 2011 6:23 PM PDT up reply actions

I read Sounder at Heart Daily

And went to every single home appearance at the Clink this year and Im still wondering just how we went from

1) We need a striker to

2) oh, we have Fucito! to

3) Sammy Ochoa Superstar

It’s a testament to the epic way in which he’s swept in like a strong breeze, seemingly appearing out of the ether, we know not whence he came.

Obviously I guess I could look this up.

I think actually Ochoa addition was post deadline and we were already all dissapointed with Hanauer a bit. Then the team kept winning and fucito got some goals.

But the front office never gave up on that striker. Everyone else kind of forgot cause we were winning.

Now here he is.

Love this player.

by RalfZakuani on Oct 29, 2011 6:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Ochoa a superstar?

He’s a 25 year old who has less pro goals in his life than 7 players on the Sounders have this season. Let’s not get crazy.

obviously my short term memory is so dicked and im too lazy to look this up

think of the above rant as a meta-study on how the soccer fans brain is formed. because I clearly cant remember what happened just a few short weeks ago though I pay attention to it daily and heartily.

by RalfZakuani on Oct 29, 2011 6:29 PM PDT up reply actions

It took til around the deadline for him to see much action.

As AlexM noted below, he hadn’t been playing much at all in Mexico the last few months before he came here.

Also, Superstar? Come on. I love what he’s given Seattle, and I think he has promise, but let’s not anoint him just yet.

Altitude?

Maybe Fucito’s speed game would have less of a chance of quick recovery to be ready to go mid week if he played more minutes at altitude at RioT?

by magistermilitum on Oct 29, 2011 6:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Minor thing

Elevation is distance from sea level with your feet on the ground

Altitude is for airborne objects

And yes, it’s possible, but Fucito went fine when starting there last time.

I myself

am also surprised that Ochoa is getting the start, but I’m excited because it’s different and I trust Sigi. I would have liked to see Fucito in there, but who knows. If Sigi is willing to do this here I think it either has something to do with 1) more compatibility with a non-Rosales fate or 2) something drastically positive enough to dethrone the nice run we’ve been having with Mike along side Fredy.

So for it to happen, assuming Fucito is 100% fit, it has to be a positive sign in that Sigi sees something big.

No need for a strawman.

Those angry about the lack of a call there are in their right to do so. In the most technical sense, the correct move for the refs was to call off sides. They did not.

by katal on Oct 29, 2011 8:08 PM PDT up reply actions

That

isn’t how the rule is called though. If the ref isn’t sure someone was off-sides then he shouldn’t call it. For cases like this where its that close the benefit of a doubt goes to the attacking player.

I’ve felt for a long time and still do that both fullback spots have to be the #1 priority for upgrading this offseason.

I think ours support the attack well enough

They just aren’t part of the cutting edge of the attack, and Riley and Gonzalez are stellar defensively, while Wahl is better offensively but not as good defending.

by Thalas on Oct 29, 2011 8:57 PM PDT up reply actions

No, they're not.

They’re acceptable at defending, most of the time. Riley is brilliant every rare now and then, and both have a tendency to put up horror show matches. Leo gives nothing to the attack.

If the Sounders were to get an upgrade at LB especially, I think you’d be pleasantly surprised at how much of an impact it would make.

It’s just that simple. We get pushed around and get stage fright when the real games begin. We couldn’t pass, we couldn’t defend, I don’t know if we could shoot, because we didn’t really create chances.

Dave, it's clear you favor Evans. That's fine.

I don’t think his inclusion in the center of midfield was justified. We improved after Friberg came on – though part of that was Neagle coming off. The whole team has some questions to answer.

To be frank, I have trouble taking what you say seriously after you contended last week that players don’t play with a lack of confidence if they are playing poorly, based on interactions with the ‘’hundreds of athletes you have met.’ Athletes are people. When they play well, they have high confidence. When they don’t, their confidence generally suffers. I’d be curious to hear what you think good form or poor form actually IS, when you take confidence out of the equation. /end tangential rant.

Back to tonight’s match, I think Sigi fell into some of his old traps. Sure, we suffered without the creativity of Rosales, but the choice to start with Evans, going with the big/small pairing (nothing against Ochoa, personally, I would have started Fucito but that is a tricky decision) just didn’t work out.

It's more clear that you can't think rationally about Evans

6 players had worse pass completeion percentages on the evening, yet you singled him out. You actually related playing Evans to masturbation.

When I say that Friberg was a worse passer, worse ball winner and worse offensive force over the course of the seaon I’m not making it up. Friberg is better at dead ball service.

Sure, I was colorful in my metaphor. But the point is that Evans played poorly, AS DID THE REST OF THE TEAM.

Make it about Evans if you want to. Maybe I invited that, even if my intention was to have a go at overly ‘safe zone’ personnel choices. The thrust of my argument is that we played like garbage, and I’d love, for my own psyche, to be proved wrong. Please commence now.

Still curious to hear what your thoughts are on the confidence of footballers.

But I doubt it would have made a difference. When you get outclassed this thoroughly, it’s a team effort. In particular, our midfield was utterly pathetic — most definitely including Honey Badger. I really thought nothing could dampen this season

Even a loss in this series. But that performance tonight proved me wrong.

This team needs to make some changes. A healthy Rosales and Zakuani will help. Decide if Ochoa is worth a closer look… or sign a quality target forward. But we also need to find someone to start consistently opposite Riley on defense. Maybe a younger CB for depth, too.

I hope Adrian keeps working hard this winter.

Don't forget actually RB for depth.

Here’s the question with a healthy match fit Zak what do we do with flaco? 2nd half sub or move him to CM with Alonso?

we have to score early

Damn not putting any shots on goal and they lost both their centerbacks.

Ozzie has been on edge the lat few games he’s been close to picking up reds and 2nd yellows for confrontations with other players.

Kinda sucks for Wed...

Got some non-soccer people talked into joining me at the bar on Wed for the game. Was planning on a quality dose of soccer evangelism. Now when they get there I have to say, “Hey guys, thanks for showing up. The game’s gonna start in a few minutes, and we’re already down 3-0. What are you guys drinking?”

RSL showed today what a truly healthy team can look like.

It would have been great to have a healthy Rosales, White, Zakuani for this game, even if we just got them back like Morales, etc.

I will go to the Weds game because I love the Sounders

but I can’t honestly justify bringing the kids. 3 is too tough to come back from. I need more time to contemplate the RSL game, except to say that is if we don’t come out in a 2-3-5 (ok, a 4-3-3 realistically) then the pundits can whack at the Sounders like a pinata unabashedly.

When the Sounders come back

how will you justify keeping them from seeing it in person?
