MLS Playoffs: Sounders at RSL Leg One - Gamethread
Two leg aggregate series in the MLS Playoffs favor the team with fewer games played. This has become known around MLS media circles as the "Curse of the CCL." But Real Salt Lake shouldn't take any solace in the fact that they've played fewer games. Their First XI has played in 313 more minutes than the likely lineup put forward by the Seattle Sounders. Sigi Schmid rotates his lineups and more frequently uses his substitutes than most CCL participants. The Saturday night match will not be decided by fatigue, instead by the performance of the players on the pitch.
Seattle's offensive force is quite diverse. Either five or six starters have scored six or more goals in all competitions. There are also bench scoring threats in Roger Levesque and the other second forward (Ochoa/Fucito). Salt Lake played 6 fewer games on the season, but the offense lacks diversity even accounting for that - only three players netted more than four goals. Diversity isn't the only way to look at the way the two teams differ. One is a classic diamond 4-4-2 while the other a much more fluid attack where Fredy Montero plays in both midfield and forward bands. Sigi's side is more difficult to defend, but Kreis holds an edge on the evening.
Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah holds a strong reputation for a home field advantage, but its strength faded this season. Seattle has a win there, as well as wins on the road internationally in tougher conditions than will be faced this evening. With no away goals rule any draw or win is a positive for the Sounders, while a loss would diminish their hopes of advancement. There's a strong chance that this is a game that is decided in either the first 15 or final 15 minutes. The Sounders are better than the Claret & Cobalt when going up a goal and downright amazing fighting back from a trailing position.
The game is on FoxSoccer (national) and 97.3FM with Arlo White on the call at 7:00 PM

"Allow Sabario to Dive"
Edit – Hope that the ref doesn’t award the diving & is willing to pull out the yellow for simulation.
If he's diving
and it’s getting called. He’s not scoring. He sometimes over commits to embelishment rather than trying to score.

Yep, they do.
Mostly they carry the Fox Soccer Channel games. I’m based in Iraq so I’ve watched a lot of MLS on Al Jazeera Sport.
But the MLS games tend to be on Al Jazeera Sport 7, Al Jazeera Sport 8, or similar. Not the main channel. So I seriously doubt I’ll be so lucky here.

Talk about playing your way into the starting eleven.
By the way where was the talk of Ochoa when we were all whining about the 3rd striker dilema a couple months ago. Had we not already acquired him by then? Who missed the boat on that one. (Besides all of us – someone who should have known )
If he had been acquired by then, he only just had been.

I read Sounder at Heart Daily
And went to every single home appearance at the Clink this year and Im still wondering just how we went from
1) We need a striker to
2) oh, we have Fucito! to
3) Sammy Ochoa Superstar
It’s a testament to the epic way in which he’s swept in like a strong breeze, seemingly appearing out of the ether, we know not whence he came.
Obviously I guess I could look this up.
I think actually Ochoa addition was post deadline and we were already all dissapointed with Hanauer a bit. Then the team kept winning and fucito got some goals.
But the front office never gave up on that striker. Everyone else kind of forgot cause we were winning.
Now here he is.
Love this player.
Ochoa a superstar?
He’s a 25 year old who has less pro goals in his life than 7 players on the Sounders have this season. Let’s not get crazy.

obviously my short term memory is so dicked and im too lazy to look this up
think of the above rant as a meta-study on how the soccer fans brain is formed. because I clearly cant remember what happened just a few short weeks ago though I pay attention to it daily and heartily.
It took til around the deadline for him to see much action.
As AlexM noted below, he hadn’t been playing much at all in Mexico the last few months before he came here.
Also, Superstar? Come on. I love what he’s given Seattle, and I think he has promise, but let’s not anoint him just yet.

Altitude?
Maybe Fucito’s speed game would have less of a chance of quick recovery to be ready to go mid week if he played more minutes at altitude at RioT?
by magistermilitum on Oct 29, 2011 6:25 PM PDT up reply actions
Minor thing
Elevation is distance from sea level with your feet on the ground
Altitude is for airborne objects
And yes, it’s possible, but Fucito went fine when starting there last time.

I myself
am also surprised that Ochoa is getting the start, but I’m excited because it’s different and I trust Sigi. I would have liked to see Fucito in there, but who knows. If Sigi is willing to do this here I think it either has something to do with 1) more compatibility with a non-Rosales fate or 2) something drastically positive enough to dethrone the nice run we’ve been having with Mike along side Fredy.
So for it to happen, assuming Fucito is 100% fit, it has to be a positive sign in that Sigi sees something big.
That's me

Might be a blessing in disguise
They’re going to bunker, we’re going to hammer on their gates for the rest of the game which is what we’re good at and is playing to our strength, and we might leave here with a 1-1 or 2-1 lead.

Predictable
First, they don’t call shit against these thugs, then they don’t call an offside… Our refs are crap.
This ref can suck monkey turd.
Terrible, terrible ref.
There should be at the LEAST a yellow against RSL (probably a red, given the tackle on Alonso) and that goal was offsides, PERIOD.
MLS refs ruin MLS for me. I hate these guys.

You may be right.
But that should be beside the point; it was still off-sides.
Meh
The offside rule is played too ticky taky anyway. Defenders were in the 6 yd box, they should play defense
Usually
if its that close wouldn’t it be given benefit of a doubt to the attacker.
i rather
the ref let it play if he isn’t sure if he was off-sides. I would rather have that play then have a goal be taken away from us for being off-sides on it being that close.
Don't care

Indeed
if the ref isn’t sure then don’t call it.
I don't
know how you can blame the central ref on this. Its the side refs job’s to call if its off-sides or not.
I think I'm mostly upset it was Saborio that scored.
If anyone should be given the benefit of the doubt, it is not him. Lousy cheater.
Unofficial Sounder Fan Club President - New Mexico Division
I blame the ref for all calls
that don’t go the Sounders’ way.
Behold, I am the irrational fanboy.
No need for a strawman.
Those angry about the lack of a call there are in their right to do so. In the most technical sense, the correct move for the refs was to call off sides. They did not.
That
isn’t how the rule is called though. If the ref isn’t sure someone was off-sides then he shouldn’t call it. For cases like this where its that close the benefit of a doubt goes to the attacking player.
I wasn't being sarcastic
See my post above – I was among those genuinely ticked.
I just also recognize that my state of being-pissed-off-ed-ness is largely dependent on the color jersey I root for.
What the hell was Lamar doing?
On the lead up to the goal, he’s spacing out somewhere near our central mid, and just watches as the ball is played by him to their left mid. Offside or not (if we had scored that way, I’d have been pissed to have it called back), that goal is on Lamar.
He has been fairly invisible all game.

He's in a bit of a daze
I’d switch him to our left. Their left seems more skilled than their right. Lamar may do better with their right side. He should be the first one off anyway. I’d be happy if Sigi pulled him at half, moved Brad to the right and put Friberg in at central mid.
Whether or not he was offisdes, we deserve to be down a goal right now.

No, they're not.
They’re acceptable at defending, most of the time. Riley is brilliant every rare now and then, and both have a tendency to put up horror show matches. Leo gives nothing to the attack.

Can't help but wonder how this game would look if we'd started:
Riley, Hurtado, Parke, Wahl, Ozzie, Fernandez, Friberg, Neagle, Fucito, Montero
Losing Rosales, then putting Gonzo, Evans and Ochoa in just seems like too many changes that could have resulted in a loss of chemistry.

This team should be ashamed of themselves.
They’ve let down their city, their fans, and they have let me down. It’s been dreadful, not two passes strung together, and they have No Fucking Excuse. It’s been sunday league shit, for 90 minutes. And if I hear any platitudes from the editorial staff or the members of this website, I won’t rage. But you won’t see me back, either.
Meanwhile, Sigi masturbates to the Platonic Form of Brad Evans.

He was certainly part of the problem. Lacked any real physical presence, made none of his much touted late runs, didn't pass well. That dig was aimed as Sigi though, not Evans.
Interested to hear your take of the game, Dave. I thought we were pretty damn bad, all around, with the only positive performance coming from Keller.

We aren't built to do well in the playoffs
It’s just that simple. We get pushed around and get stage fright when the real games begin. We couldn’t pass, we couldn’t defend, I don’t know if we could shoot, because we didn’t really create chances.
Seemed like they could open us up on both wings at will and we had no counter.
Bleck, just a terrible game.
don't fall into that trap
This was same team that faced 14 win-or-go-home games over the past three seasons and won every one. It’s not as simple as not being built for playoffs.

I wonder if our perennial difficulty in converting PKs has something to do with this.
Not a ton of composure?
yeah
But the book on us is get physical and we fold. In the Cup games, they got called pretty tight. Tonight the ref swallowed the whistle, just like they always do in the first round. The game changes and we don’t have the physical skills to stand up to that change in play. It rattled us and we buckled.
Fortunately with both Borchers and Olave injured
if they don’t play, and we actually do play the way we have all season until this game. I think we still have a chance. Maybe not much of one, but I hope we at least make it competitive…
I honestly think it was a mistake to not start Fucito.
The reason Ochoa has done so well is because the other team is exhausted by the time he comes on.
Unofficial Sounder Fan Club President - New Mexico Division
I agree
i wasn’t exactly amused that sigi didn’t start fucito.
Then why didn't Fucito score 6 or 7 when he came on.
Oh yeah, no service, just like Ochoa got no service.
But fucito
manged to get into the Centerback’s skin in the away game against RSL this season causing them to go down a guy.
Fucito came in against an already subbed defender and a tteam with a 2 goal lead.
No reason for them to open up and give him any space. They were already bunkering by the time he got on the field.
Unofficial Sounder Fan Club President - New Mexico Division
As opposed
to when Ochoa came on and we were down a goal and they were bunkered and he scored…
I think that was mostly Friberg vs Evans

Other players passed poorly. As did Evans. Don't defend the others, but don't Evans, he was poor and we all saw it.
La Vecchia Signora Forever!
Singling out Evans, as you and blake have done
is absurd. Absolutely totally unjustified. He was easily more effective than half the team. He’s been a better passer than Friberg the entire season.
I am not a Supporter | I am not a Fan | I am a Sounder
Sounder At Heart
Dave, it's clear you favor Evans. That's fine.
I don’t think his inclusion in the center of midfield was justified. We improved after Friberg came on – though part of that was Neagle coming off. The whole team has some questions to answer.
To be frank, I have trouble taking what you say seriously after you contended last week that players don’t play with a lack of confidence if they are playing poorly, based on interactions with the ‘’hundreds of athletes you have met.’ Athletes are people. When they play well, they have high confidence. When they don’t, their confidence generally suffers. I’d be curious to hear what you think good form or poor form actually IS, when you take confidence out of the equation. /end tangential rant.
Back to tonight’s match, I think Sigi fell into some of his old traps. Sure, we suffered without the creativity of Rosales, but the choice to start with Evans, going with the big/small pairing (nothing against Ochoa, personally, I would have started Fucito but that is a tricky decision) just didn’t work out.
La Vecchia Signora Forever!

It's more clear that you can't think rationally about Evans
6 players had worse pass completeion percentages on the evening, yet you singled him out. You actually related playing Evans to masturbation.
When I say that Friberg was a worse passer, worse ball winner and worse offensive force over the course of the seaon I’m not making it up. Friberg is better at dead ball service.
I am not a Supporter | I am not a Fan | I am a Sounder

Sure, I was colorful in my metaphor. But the point is that Evans played poorly, AS DID THE REST OF THE TEAM.
Make it about Evans if you want to. Maybe I invited that, even if my intention was to have a go at overly ‘safe zone’ personnel choices. The thrust of my argument is that we played like garbage, and I’d love, for my own psyche, to be proved wrong. Please commence now.
Still curious to hear what your thoughts are on the confidence of footballers.

Same here
But I doubt it would have made a difference. When you get outclassed this thoroughly, it’s a team effort. In particular, our midfield was utterly pathetic — most definitely including Honey Badger. (On which subject, I wonder if he picks up a suspension when the league reviews the tapes? It wouldn’t surprise me.)
by regnaD kciN on Oct 29, 2011 9:11 PM PDT via iPhone app up reply actions
They won't suspend him for that.
If the RSL player doesn’t dive, it doesn’t look like anything. It was a stupid push on Ozzie’s part, he got a yellow appropriately, end of story.
Playoffs
results determine draft order from #10-19 in the draft. So Seattle can end up being #10 to #19 in the draft order which #19 is MLS Cup winners.
I would assume #12 at the highest...

Heads Will Roll
So basically this wasnt just a 3-0 loss.
This was the type of PERFORMANCe regardless of score that means things are drastically wrong in Sounderville.
There is no excuse for this performance even if it was a one time thing.
If our team does this our team is flawed.
This was no fluke.
We played like a team that deserved to lose by at least 3-0.
Who is to blame?
1) Sigi – went without wahl friburg or fucito.
2) neagle and fernandez – sucked
3) who team – suck
4) NOT Kasey Keller – because Kasey is a champ and played a fucking amazing game.
What are you suggesting?
1. Fire Sigi? See Hanauer’s recent comments that that would be “stupid.”
2. Retool the team? See #1. Same interview. Not happening.
They aren't
gonna fire Sigi after extending his contract. If they were considering doing that they would have waited to extend his contract.
Good to see
You took the time to come up with a well-rounded and reasonable response instead of blurting out hyperbolic claptrap.
Sigi does things right more then any other MLS coach
I sure as hell rather have him then Backe.
Interesting that you specifically point out Neagle and Flaco for sucking but neither of them would have been different with Wahl, Friburg, and Fucito starting.
The team was clearly not in it to win it tonight though.
I agree
if its choices between Sigi and Backe i rather stick with sigi.

I respect your opinion even though it's wrong.
RSL is really good when healthy.
Assuming we don’t pull this out and LA even makes it past NY, they have as good a chance as anyone to end the Galaxy run.
There's a fine line between impossible and improbable
We’re unfortunately straddling that line very precariously, but we did have the best offense in the league, away goals don’t matter, we’re playing at home, and Rosales will be available. Not likely at all, but still possible
Plus both their central defenders had to be subbed out and one or both may not be back for Wednesday.
Think of this as only halftime. It’s a big mountain to climb, but the Sounders have shown me over and over that they can come back. Still gotta hold out hope. But it does look pretty grim.

This is a Sounders team that has shown in can come back when down and can play in big games. I’m not writing us out yet.
We don't need three goals
We need a margin of three goals. How many times did we do that? Three. Against Toronto, Columbus and DC. At home we lost to RSL, and generally speaking we kind of suck at home.
the percentages are not on our side, to say the least

Worst performance ever by a Sounders team?
Worse than 0-4 at home to Galaxy? I think so. We had NOTHING all game. It could have been 6-0. Putrid.
Agreed this game mattered a lot more
What I don’t understand is that they’ve shown 3 years in a row they can win the big games (USOC, this years CCL). We looked like we were struck with fright at playing a game that matters as much as the playoffs.
Part of it is the opposition in the playoffs
Houston in ’09, LA in ’10. Neither were pushovers.
This year our “reward” for being the 2nd best team in MLS was a date with the 3rd best.
But you can’t blame the opponents. This team fell apart tonight.

I really thought nothing could dampen this season
Even a loss in this series. But that performance tonight proved me wrong.
This team needs to make some changes. A healthy Rosales and Zakuani will help. Decide if Ochoa is worth a closer look… or sign a quality target forward. But we also need to find someone to start consistently opposite Riley on defense. Maybe a younger CB for depth, too.
I hope Adrian keeps working hard this winter.
