US Open Cup Final - Sounders v Fire - Gamethread
It is easy to get the sense that Tuesday night's US Open Cup Final is an important match for the Seattle Sounders. If you follow their various social media platforms you've been flooded with tweets, Facebook posts, contests, videos and more. On the radio they started purchasing advertising weeks ago. The Supporters Groups have swelled to a state of excitement that cannot be contained. The march to the match will be massive and led by Cups. Here, we've gone a bit nuts with coverage as well with 6 posts in the last 3 days, not to mention other news, fanshots, etc.
At some point it comes down to the game - to the men taking the field for the Chicago Fire, or those wearing the Rave Green of the Sounders this is their opportunity for silverware. For the hundred or so traveling Fire fans tonight is their opportunity to return to glory of years past. For the tens of thousands in the greens and blues this is another chapter in a history that is both short and long.
History will be made in the Pews of Royal Brougham Park. Ideally it will be a history with a little Northwest flavor in it.
The game is on FoxSoccer (national) and 97.3FM with Arlo White on the call at 7:00 PM

NY up 2-0 at 62'
It’s looking like we are going to be alive in the supporters shield race for another week if we can win this weekend
Dammit, don't get my hopes up!!
But, wow, how amazing would that be?!
by wyte_lightning on Oct 4, 2011 6:35 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
it's still a long shot
The galaxy need only 2 points in their last 3 games (although behind right now in 79’ against NY) to clinch the shield.
It comes down to them playing Chivas
If Chivas manages to draw with them, then they have to go into Houston and Houston will probably be needed all 3 points to make the playoffs, so if Chivas manages a draw…..lets just say Houston will be at home with all the incentive in the world to win.
Now we have to do our part and win next weekend
Put the pressure on LA to win the next one.

Are there going to be
a bunch of Timbers fans sporting Fire kits in the stands?

How official is the starting lineup on the soundersfc.com MatchDay page an hour before the match?
Because they have a starting lineup on there before I saw it announced on twitter.
SEA: Keller, Riley, Parke, Hurtado, Wahl, Evans, Alonso, Rosales, Neagle, Fucito, Jaqua
CHI: Johnson, Cuesta, Gibbs, Segares, Ristic, Paladini, Pause Midfielder, Bone, Oduro, Chaves, Nazarit
Answer: Not very accurate
Since Chicago twitpic’d their lineup
Johnson, Segares, Gibbs, Mikulic, Gargan, Pappa, Pardo, pause, Paladini, Oduro, Nyarko
Please not Jaqua....
Loving Riley and Rosales though.

Jaqua is Mr. Open Cup
He at least needs a half..
Fair enough.
It is hard to argue with history, but it is easy to compare to recent performance.

Don't bring him back too early
It’s tempting to get him back in the lineup ASAP, but they have to take care of that injury and be sure it’s healed.
by Roger Sounder on Oct 4, 2011 6:45 PM PDT up reply actions
Absolutely, especially with something like an MCL.
Better to wait until it’s 100% as opposed to bringing him back when he’s 90% and risk further injury.

Does the cash prize go to the team?
Or do the players share it?
Players from the championship team divide up prize money associated with the tournament.
Source from 2009. Looks like the prize money is still only $100,000. I remember reading before that the Sounders org divided up the prize money between the lesser paid players.
I'm so excited
I’m so scared, er, nervous about the game tonight. Anything can happen in a one-game match. So much can go right but just enough can go wrong to disappoint.
I’ve been at Temple for 3 hours watching the crowd roll in. Granted this is a regular pre-game watering hole, but it’s been fun listening to the buzz and excitement from the fans in Rave Green and Shale Grey and Sounder Blue.
We’re going to have an amazing crowd tonight. I want to hear the Hawks’ Nest echoing back “Come on Seattle… Fight and Win” from the far side of the field.
Fan of: Cardinals, Blues, Sounders, Yellow Jackets, Wolverines, Rams, and Blazers.

Are they showing the game online anywhere???
One bad thing about Directv is the sales folks apparently think that NFL Sunday ticket is the only football an American could want to watch :(
Arlo online whilst streaming the match is as close as I can get unfortunately.

makes it tough gotta take off early and risk being totally obliterated on Wednesday if you don’t take the whole day off too
Wishing I were there....

That is extremely difficult

I was feeling like a newb since I mostly just read the blog here and don’t comment… thought I was missing some reference to Scarves up… ;)
And Martino starts on Montero nonsense before the match starts.
Please, sync in time with FSC Arlo.

That's the way
the Sounders Nest should look for every match.
Riley looks a bit rusty,
Given the ball away more than usual.
I hope this poor play by Riley
is just rust and not because he had his bell rung.
Harkes is an idiot
Can’t talk about Montero without being negative.
I hate Harkes so much
He’s a douchebag (sleeps with a teammate’s wife)
He’s a terrible announcer (often totally off the point and clueless to what’s going on)
He’s an opinionated ass (case in point: picking on Montero)
I can’t believe he has a job in broadcasting.
Harkes isn't on the call.
Martino is. But Harkes is just as bad if not worse.
well maybe he'll quit being so lazy then
Harked is just motivating.

true but Madden is good for kids
he teaches them to count… “that things got 1,2,3,4,5,6…6 legs Whoah!”
will be interesting to see if frieberg tucks inside more
chicago was controlling the middle of the pitch pretty well.
You know
I think I’d rather see the team go after a Sean Johnson next season, with the aim of making him a career keeper, rather than aiming for someone else that will need to replaced in 2 years.
Shocked Anibaba didn't start...
.. Could make things difficult for our front line, really liked him leading up to the draft
by BaltimoreIslander on Oct 4, 2011 8:30 PM PDT via iPhone app reply actions
with Oduro up top..
.. This is not a good pace for us, hurtado is doing a decent job at keeping him in check but with his speed, it’s dangerous, we need one now!
by BaltimoreIslander on Oct 4, 2011 8:39 PM PDT via iPhone app up reply actions
Love Fucito
but he’s not the guy to take corners.
That one was poor
but over the course of the season he’s been pretty good with those in-swingers from the right corner.
2 Yellows to Chicago: Nyarko, Paladini
Alvaro subbed out at half because of a head injury.

Also Montero and Fucito each have hit a post
Nos audietis in somniis, Nos audietis in altum: You will hear us!
Nyarko yellow
Fernandez out at the half with a head injury
So this is blasphemy,
but I say Jaqua on for Fucito
They could've used his height
in that series right there.
YESSSSS
No Fucito, Friberg takes it… Goal after an incredible save initially

I gotta say
your supporters and fans were a class act tonight, and I thanked all of them for coming to a great game. Then I cheered the sounders. Every time.
Hey guys...
I didn’t get a chance to post last night, but I did on the most recent article. Just wanted to echo Tweed’s sentiments. Congrats on an impressive title. You guys were the better team last night and deserved to win. Your attack was just too much for us.

Sorry to be late but WOW WHAT A GOAL FROM ALONSO
That was literally better than Montero’s goal against the Whitecaps. He created that entirely on his own.

Might have been the best individual goal the Sounders have scored.
by wyte_lightning on Oct 4, 2011 9:09 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
well...
it was a great goal, and he finished it on his own with remarkable skill..
but it was created when Chicago’s entire central defense followed Montero et al. to the corner flag and Seattle kept possession, played it out down the line, and swung it back in to the Honey Badger.
Team goal. great Ossie finish.
But he still had to beat two defenders and a goalkeeper

I hope the people in my Toronto hotel didn't hear that late night yelling...
Two weeks. Two trophies. This is a special season. All is possible.
From the awesome @OptaJack:
27 – @soundersfc out-shoots @ChicagoFire 27 to 8; in fact #EBFG had more blocked shots (9) than #cf97 had in total. Home-field. #MLS #USOC
Great to see him take the trophy
It’s almost hard to recognize him without the jersey, though. :P

So nice...
to have a Seattle team that knows how to win some competitions. Lets keep it roll’n boys!
So nice
To have a newspaper that appreciates how much it means.

… well we got a front page mention, I suppose.
Give it time
They’ve had 24 hours to write about Amanda Knox and all of two hours to write about the Sounders. I bet you tomorrow there’ll be a full-sized picture on the front of the sports section with the top of the front page reading “THREEPEAT!”

Heading souh on I-5
On my way home from the game. One of my best sports experiences ever, on par with being in attendance for my D-3 college basketball team winning NCAA tournament games on our home court. Just plain amazing, had tears in my eyes after Montero scored (and one of many beers in hand). Thank you Seattle Sounders FC for the memories, I will never forget this night.

We are the first MLS team to 3peat a trophy
(besides Toronto although that is definitely not much competition with 2-3 other teams besides them mostly from lower divisions)
I actually am genuinely interested in the places the Canadian Championship will go in the next few years
Slightly unrelated, I also think that rather than Canada getting one bid, the US and Canada should together get five bids, with all the current bids for both countries holding up. This would insure at least one American and one Canadian team in CCL, but if a non-Cup-holding Canadian team wins the SS or the MLS Cup, they can still get into CCL (which I think under the current system would not happen).

by s0merand0mdude on Oct 4, 2011 11:08 PM PDT up reply actions
i doubt concacaf would let that happen
Every country has a bid in the tournament and just because canada’s teams play in MLS they shouldn’t be barred.

Awesome night.
I was at the match. Don’t know how it came across on TV but it was tense as hell in the stadium. Amazing night.
One question for those watching from home: Did Oduro come off as huge asshole? Because he did from where I was sitting. The guy was constantly picking fights and complaining. I’ve actually never seen bigger douchebag on the field. Not sure if that came through on the telecast or not.
I didn't see him a whole lot on tv at all in general
Probably because Oduro was owned by Hurtado for the whole game.
Highlights are up now on the front page of soundersFC.com
I sure hope that the camera work wasn’t actually that bad all game for you poor souls that couldn’t make it to the stadium.
Sounders 'til I die
I just watched that, too
It’s absolutely terrible.
I believe that the highlights are from the stadium's video feed
As in what’s on the screen during play.
The yellow card display at about 8:04 makes me suspicious of this.
