The Sounders enter the offseason looking to build on their success over the past three seasons. One mechanism they could use is a trade. They have depth and youth that have value on the open market. Players like Flaco, Neagle, Friberg, Evans, Ochoa, Carrasco, Fucito and Estrada could be traded for the right player or combination of players. Are there any players currently in the MLS or in the upcoming draft that would be logical trade targets for the Sounders?
Any trade will need to take into consideration both the tactical needs of the team and the salary cap. Every player will require a different level of commitment. George John might be a nice addition but his cost would be steep. You are basically looking at having to trade someone like Fernandez and probably a solid young player like Carrasco or a starting CB as well. If Dallas thinks they will lose him to Europe in another year, they may be willing to consider trading him, but would the cost to the Sounders' future make sense and does a CB help take the Sounders to the next level? Other players like Chris Wondolowski would have to fit into the salary cap. Wondo made 175K this year. The Sounders would have to include a higher priced player from their roster to make the trade work, not to mention including a valuable younger player or two as well. Say a package on the order of Friberg, Ochoa and Carrasco. Or do the Sounders look to free up some cap space while picking up a good solid piece for their future in the SuperDraft? Andrew Wenger from Duke looks to be a solid defensive midfielder who could be groomed as a FB. Trading two or three starting caliber players to Montreal might entice them to give up their first pick in the Superdraft. Would a package of Evans or Friberg and Carrasco or Ochoa make sense?
Is there a player that you think makes sense as a trade target and what would you be willing to give up in order to add him to the Sounders' roster? How does your proposed trade impact the salary cap? And why do you think it will improve the team?
