Sounders Open Hawks Nest For All Of 2012 Season
UPDATE (16 Nov): Formal press release sent out today. It lists capacity as 2200. Tickets go on sale on Thursday the 17th.
In an email sent to various email lists the Seattle Sounders announced that the little triangle of metal bleachers rising above the North End Faithful (known as the Hawks Nest for Seahawks Games) will be open for all 2012 regular season matches at CenturyLink Field. Light on details, the email is quoted below;
The chanting and singing just got louder.
Sounders FC are pleased to announce the Hawks Nest will be open for the entire 2012 Sounders FC season.
To reserve seats, please contact the Sounders FC Ticket Office at
877-MLS-GOAL (877-657-4625)
Adding roughly 2300 seats to the already impressive attendance of the team will mean not just nearly 40,000 people at regular season matches, but should also expand the team's list of potential buyers for CONCACAF Champions League matches, Open Cup games and the Friendly. Just like in years past, the Sounders front office is targeting their own record as something to beat.

I'm sure the Church of Fucito will be happy to hear they finally have a proper place to serve worship.
It works in a post Fucito world too

Should stomping be made a regular part of the seating up there?
It was used to great effect at Empire Field.
I just hope that the tickets will be cheap and the fans will be loud.
I don’t particularly want to see a tame bleacher section.
I met a possum.
Same price as South End
The Hawks nest was open for about 3 hours back in February this year. I excitedly wrote a fan post on it that morning and then had to go back and redact practically the whole thing.
Anyway, one thing I did take a way from that was this seating chart image from my browser cache of the Sounders FC site that day. You can see that the coloring of the Hawks Nest Pews is the same as the entire South End. I think it’s reasonable to expect that this is still an accurate pricing structure now that it’s officially open.

It's funny, I feel like it should be cheaper as bleachers vs seats
despite the fact that none of us ever actually sit down…

I have seen conflicting numbers
is it 2300, 2500, or 3000 in capacity? Different sources have different numbers listed. I saw all three last night after I saw the tweets about it.
Bleacher seating
The numbers may have something to do with bleachers. No matter what you paint on the bench, bleachers have a tendency to always appear full after a certain level but can shoe horn in a few more.
I’m certain there is an actual number of tickets that can be sold for the section though and that’s the number that makes the most sense for this discussion.

Notes/questions on opening the Hawks Nest
The entire lower bowl of CenturyLink is now open for business. This is a big deal and since Hawks Nest seats would be considered lower bowl, they’ll likely be in higher demand than the upper bowl seats (even though those are all-inclusieve). This will be true for STH selection and probably on the secondary market as well.
Joe Roth has previously stated that opening the Hawks Nest brings the total “stadium manifest” to 39,000. Since they also include press, staff, and other fieldside personell in attendance numbers, this will mean that most, if not all, games next season will have attendance in excess of 40,000.
As I understand it, opening the Hawks Nest required a renegotiation with Microsoft over the lost add space with the tarp. I’m curious how that played out. Perhaps they’ll redo the tarps over the upper deck with more prominent Microsoft branding. Maybe Microsoft will get more time on the field side boards. There has to have been some kind of concession by the Sounders to their sponser in order to make this work.
Sounders FC management clearly has 2 obsessions that are revealed through the ongoing expansion of available seats.
- First, they’re obesessed with to selling out games. They almost opened the Hawks Nest last season, but I think they got cold feet about the possibility of missing a sellout and decided not to. This season with more success behind them, they’re more confident about opening it up.
- Second, they’re obsessed with breaking their own attendance records. They’ve broken it each year since 2009 and at this point, looking back, you can see how they’ve carefully experimented with stadium expansion year over year. For example, they opened up the upper deck seats for the playoffs in ‘09 and then made them available in ’10 for the whole season. Another example, they experimented with partial season tix packages in ’09 and then in ’11 they used them again for the 3 games that pushed our average up this season. Last example, they’ve already tried to open the full stadium up twice last season with mixed results (45,000 for NY and 64,000 for SJ). We’re not all the way there yet for a full stadium sellout, but we’re moving in the right direction.
Bottom line, I’m more than okay with these obsessions. We’ve got really smart folks in the FO carefully managing and experimenting with attendance.
I wonder if this says anything about the current STH wait list. Is it deep enough now that they’re confident they’ll sell a large portion of the Hawks Nest to STHs? I know at the beginning of last season, they had depleated their STH wait list completely.
Last thing, in the most recent Nos Audietes podcast Aaron made the point that 95% of what the Sounders do off the pitch is designed to piss off the rest of MLS. While his comment was regarding the new neon blue jersey, I think it applies here too. Most of the rest of MLS absolutely hates Seattle because we’re so good at supporting our team.
In regards to the Microsoft branding
they started carrying a tarp the size of the center circle on and off for pre/half/post. Getting that on TV will be tough. But that started during the US Open Cup (when the Pews were open) and continued through the season.

That tarp is a bad idea.
It was holding water during the pregame at the last game vs. Salt Lake. When they lifted it to carry it off, all of the water ran to one spot on the field and left a nice puddle that took a while to dissipate.
They could address this fairly easily by putting drain holes in it, but I doubt that they will.

I'd love it if they took this opportunity to refresh the tarps
With the Keller retirement, they have a huge opportunity. Why should we be looking up at Pat Onstad when we could have our own players up there. An idea that just occurred to me is they could take images of Keller hoisting the US Open Cup and put those up on the tarps, along with Microsoft advertising. That would be much better than what they currently have.
More is better...
But what is going to be done with it? I sit in 137 and even during the most exciting matches only a few of us chant (somewhat sheepishly). I’d like to see the energy spread around the whole stadium.
Imagine the North and South ends with back and forth chants, etc.!
I realize a North End Supporter groups would have to happen organically and there would have to be some coordination but man, wouldn’t that be awesome?
It seems to me the the YSA chant come from the North end (and the rest of the stadium) this could be discouraged if a group was there to pick up the slack.
Terrible's what it is.

Not really
Just because they are smaller and more spread out does not mean they don’t exist.
I thought they stepped up their game a lot in 2011.

I've heard two rumors regarding the 300 level
1) They are no longer going to sell those seats to STH (unlikely given the number of seats Hanauer is saying we can now sell)
2) The seats will no longer be all inclusive.
Can anyone confirm or deny this?

I tried to get all inclusive 300 level tickets,
but was told from a season ticket sales rep that they would not be available this upcoming year. At least as all inclusive.
If this means I don't have to walk all the way around the fenced-off concessions area I am 100% in favor

Only for the 300 level
that North End All inclusive is continuing

Thank god!
Nachos! The only reason my 4 year old will go to a game. Not totally true, but they are a big selling point for him.
Lame
I had 300 level all inclusive seats last year, they were great. Worth the price for the free mixers alone.

NYRB match was on a Thursday night
It is reasonable to assume that a Saturday match would have drawn well over 50k
