MLS Playoffs: Real Salt Lake at Sounders Leg Two - Gamethread

Times are not bright. It is cloudy, cold and rain is expected. The Seattle Sounders are down three goals and one of their MVP candidates is out for the game. Real Salt Lake doesn't get blown out with a healthy roster. It is a very Seattle day.

It isn't a very Sounders day though. Three straight US Open Cups, 63 regular season points, three straight MLS Cup Playoffs appearances, success in the CONCACAF Champions League. 6-2 over Columbus. 4-1 over Comunicaciones. That's all that Seattle needs to do.

Sigi Schmid, his eleven starters and three subs just need to play the best game they have in their brief MLS' lives. There will need to be tactical shifts, but just minor ones. There will be lineup changes, but that isn't the key. The incredibly deep offense, the two active MVP candidates, and the Keeper of the Year candidate all just need to be at their best.

On short rest this team is quite good. Three of the four blowout wins are in similar circumstances. Salt Lake's three blowout losses are all after short rest. There's reason for hope. But there is no reason for fans to be confident. Prepare for epic, whether that epic is Star Wars or the Charge of the Light Brigade will be decided by the players on the field. The easiest way that happens is a hatrick with an extra goal and a shutout. #HaircutsAndTacos

The game is on ESPN2, ESPN3.com (national) and 97.3FM with Arlo White on the call at 7:00 PM

Really? I am just feeling anxious.

It could pay off one way in an unlikely, but totally awesome ending, or the other, more likely disappointing end. It’s games like these that make sports worth spending time following, but oh man, can the edge of the seat be an uncomfortable place to sit.

Why is Riley out?

Injury concern? Feels like even if he was questionable he would be playing.

Assuming Riley didn't get injured

What’s the mentality behind Scott? He’s not better getting into the attack than Riley is, is he?

by Tohoya on Nov 2, 2011 6:44 PM PDT reply actions

A thought,

It may allow him to go into a 3 back easier than with Riley on the field.

He's not just worse

He is an atrocious offensive liability

by ClosetCoug on Nov 2, 2011 6:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Riley has been poor...

…since coming back from concussion, and his passing was barely over 50% in the first leg. Saborio and Espindola love to run at players, and Riley loves to back up.

by nimajneb on Nov 2, 2011 6:50 PM PDT up reply actions

I think I see what Sigi is thinking.

He wants to remain strong in the back, and have Scott shut down Espindola or Saborio like he did to Brek Shea in the Dallas game. He’s made it clear he’s worried about the counter … it’s a 90-minute game, so while the midfield and forwards are working their way to three goals, #haircutsandtacos, the back four need to keep RSL off the board.

YES! I have this on tv in HD here (unless my directvla box guide is wrong...)

So incredibly happy. It is now to the point where when I wear my SSFC polo to work, the kids no longer ask me why I’m wearing an xbox shirt, and instead run up and go, “Do the Sounders play today?” even if they don’t have my class that day. I also now have multiple students coming up to me before class and telling me about how they use the Sounders sometimes on FIFA12.

Starting lineup changes

Glad so see Fucito starting this time. Ochoa seems better of the bench when he’s played for the Sounders, and Fucito give RSL headaches. Very good.

Also glad to see Friberg. He’s a better passer then Evans I think and will help improve our posession problems.

Not sure about Scott starting. Why not Wahl? Has he fallen out of favor? Is he injured? He would have been the best choice IMO.

Marrufo is absolutely ridiculous for not being on top of that, though

At that point, RSL had made it obvious that they were going to delay at every possible moment and they were sitting on a 3-goal lead. Marrufo is practically asking for a mass confrontation by not dealing with that more strongly in the first place.

Hopefully the adrenalin of 'do or die' will help with that.

Haven't been following game thread, but...

being conservative with the book, I have no idea why there are more than 9 RSL players on the pitch right now. This is insanity. Studs out, high, nothing. Running into stationary player off the ball, kicking ball away on free kick, nothing. Repeated blatant fouls, nothing.

You do all the work for us, Honey Badger, and we'll just eat whatever you find.

Friberg deserved a yellow in his own right as well

But this ref was determined not to hand out anything, we’ll see if the 2nd half allows shifts his mental state to “ok cards are allowed now”. I bet we see a card in the first 10

Not to dissuade you from being optimistic tonight..

but, it’s been a hell of a season. With the injuries they shouldn’t be where they are today.

Next year.. Zak is back. Rosales is healthy with a new contract. A good keeper and some help on defense comes in. Everyone’s rested. And we get to do it alllll over again.

Comments from an RSL fan:

We’ve been dirty. I don’t like it, but that’s the purist in me speaking. We’ve played it very well. Should be some yellow cards in this match as well; I feel like RSL should have one yellow card, though I’m not quite sure, and Friberg should have one. Beltran’s save was incredible, he stepped up big time. Injuries are just rotten. So is the playoff format where #2 plays #3; both teams deserve to go through. When Montero missed that back post, John Harkes said “That was basically Willy Wonka.”

Once more into the breach.

Both teams are playing really hard.

I find it difficult to believe that either can win the next matchup if players don’t recover from injuries.

Agree with it all

Don’t think there have been any red offenses, but at least a couple yellows and Friberg asked for one as well. Beltran has an amazing save and Fredy has missed some golden opportunities.

The thing with the yellows and RSL

is that nobody in particular has been infringing (except for Johnson, I guess, but even then it’s been more physical play than outright fouls), but the whole team has come in really heavy on 50-50 balls.

Fredy will be gone to Europe for sure

I would expect the same from Alonso — even Sir Whisky-Nose at ManU was praising his play. As a matter of fact, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them sign him as a squad player this winter.

Fernandez? He’s probably the most likely of the three to stay, but I’d still say the odds are he’ll be gone. What with Stevie Z coming back, and Rosales probably getting a big contract extension, we’re got too many midfielders. While I’d definitely prefer seeing Flaco kept ahead of Evans and FreeBird, he’d bring far more in transfer funds than either of them would (i.e. something versus nothing) and would free up a DP slot. Plus, it’s no secret that he and Sigi have issues. I’d guess he’d jump at the first solid offer from Europe or South America.

by regnaD kciN on Nov 2, 2011 10:24 PM PDT up reply actions

That's what I love about this blog

always plenty to talk about!

I’ll be surprised if someone in Euro doesn’t pick up Alonso. If they don’t, they’re brain dead. Montero? I don’t think so and I’ve said all along he ain’t going nowhere anytime soon, unless he’s up for something along the lines of Ligue 1 or Holland (not out of the question). But my sense is that everyone we want back will pretty much be back (aside from x-draft and a player or two to Euro).

by swansuite on Nov 3, 2011 11:27 AM PDT up reply actions

It could be difficult for Alonso to get a foreign work permit

AFAIK, a lot of US-based players get their foreign work permits by spending time on either the youth or senior national teams, or having relatives in foreign countries. I don’t think Alonso has either of those angles. If he wins some individual awards, he might be able to convince someone to give him a work permit, but it’s not the easiest process.

The big problem in the last ten minutes was fatigue

In the five minutes or so after Neagle scored, we had a whole slew of chances, but then seemed to run out of gas. Blame the RSL thugball that took Flaco and Evans out early, both for depriving us of two strong offensive players, and costing us two substitutions when we really needed them.

by regnaD kciN on Nov 2, 2011 9:33 PM PDT up reply actions
