Convey Option Offically Declined - Available In Re-Entry Draft
Teams have until December 1st to decide on options, but the San Jose Earthquakes already told Convey he's not coming back. Phase One of the Re-Entry Draft would be at his option number (between 0-10% more than his 336k 2011 contract). Phase Two is at any number the acquiring team can negotiate. An unpicked player's MLS rights are held by the original team who can then negotiate a new deal.
According to the link, Convey wants a firm and regular starting role which lead to disagreements with coach Frank Yallop. As a left back Convey could be in the USMNT picture. Left mid is a position of strength in MLS and the Nats.

Doesn't sound like he would fit our needs
We are way deep in Mids. If he would consider staying at LB, then maybe. In all, it’s hard to really know what FO is thinking other than “backs who join attack more.” There are many ways to do that. I would assume Sigi’s arrow is still the formation of choice, so a high LB or RB is probably more likely than a speed demon wing-back. Without knowing what they are thinking, we can only guess which D would fit the bill.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!
Dave – I don’t totally understand this " Phase One of the Re-Entry Draft would be at his option number (between 0-10% of his 336k 2011 contract)" … does that mean 90%-110% of $335?…so, no less than $301,500? Do you think Seattle has interest in him? Do you think Seattle has $300k interest in him? If not, do you think they would be a Round Two suitor at a lower number? (assuming no one bites at his current number)
I don't
think Seattle would want him at that amount. So i can see Seattle going for him in the 2nd round.
I also can't tell form Convey's comments...
whether he really, really wants to play Left Mid or if he really wants to play one position in the starting XI and to be involved in the attack. It sounds like his big gripe was never knowing if or where he would be playing week to week. Obviously, if he wants to play at midfield, it’s unlikely we would have room for him (barring major moves). But, if he wants to become the attacking LB of Sigi’s dreams, he would seem to be a big upgrade from Wahl and Leo’s perfectly serviceable combo back there.
It sounded like to
me it was an issue over playing time rather than position. He wanted more playing time than Yallop was willing to give him.
If Seattle can get him in round 2 and agree to a fair contract i say go for it.
I think we could get cheaper LB
but if we could snag him in the 2nd rd for around 200k it might be worth it. It really all depends on Rosales new cap hit(dp or not), if we go after a 3rd DP (most likely a fwd), and who we don’t resign. I see that we need to sign 2 FB, 1 GK, and 1 FW and that is imo going to take 400k-700k in cap room to upgrade those positions. Im curious if the FO is going to try and sign a 3rd DP around 20-21 yo to minimize cap hit. Should be an interesting offseason.
i don't think
i would that for 200k i mean we can get 2 outside backs for 100k
I'd bet we don't go for a DP striker in the off-season
It’s not really the position of greatest need for the team and that money could probably be spent more effectively in other places.
even if
a DP forward isn’t going to happen. We still could use an update there.
If nothing else, we'll need depth at forward
If Jaqua’s contract is up, we’ll probably be looking to upgrade in the slots he and Noonan have occupied. We might not need to give up DP money though. There’s always the possibility of moving Neagle up top in some situations, so he’d be a decent option for depth at forward. It also gives him a chance at more minutes if he can get into matches at either position. We might have to make Rosales our third DP and use allocation money for the rest of our signings.

Can he defend?
Not sure I’ve seen him play LB outside of MLS All-Star game.
If we could afford
to buy him & let him compete for a spot, that would be awesome. I would love to see that happen. Maybe he could carve out a niche like Noonan & take a lower salary.
Were getting lots of looks by vets & trialists. Lets open our minds up & let go of the Riley’s & Wahls. Were the United of the MLS. We get the first looks of the Convey’s & Del Piero’s of the world.
Except we haven't finished at the top of the table yet.
We have legitimate holes to fill on this team still. Taking expensive gambles on players like Del Piero is for when you’re solid everywhere else.
If anybody is the United of MLS it's LA
They’ve won the Supporters Shield 2 consecutive seasons, won the MLS Cup, and have 2 MLS Cup final appearances in the past 3 seasons. They also spend about as much on players as the MLS structure will allow. I think that fits the United mold more than us.
