Around SBN: What If This Is It For The Celtics? End Of An Era Looming

NBC is in the process of rebranding versus. Part of how they are doing that is by featuring MLS, in this case the LA Galaxy. This is an amazing advert for the league.

It's only fair.

If they’re going to steal Arlo from us, the least they do is put us in a commercial.

*could do

Sorry for the typo. I was enraged. =)

So far so good

They hire a good announcer. Understand the game is more about team than individual. ESPN could take a lesson with the games they are still covering.

Surprisingly Good

Well done and I’m rather happy with the rebranding of Versus into NBC Sports. Gives it 10x more credibility.

This ad isn't for us or any of the current fanbase for any team really

This ad is directed mostly at potential viewers, they’re obviously running the ad during non MLS broadcasts as we’re out of season, and as such, I would think full replays of Hassli’s, Nagbe’s, and some of the other goals of the year, or slow motion replays of those goals, or some of the better passing or crossing sequences, would serve to show the quality that our league displays on a regular basis.

Skill, flash, goals, etc, will bring them in, the quality of play, quality of announcers (Arlo), quality of production and innovation will keep them coming back.

This is nothing more than a feel good ad with a few players from the Shield & Cup winning team. It’s a nice beginning to what could be a storyline campaign of ads, but, yeah. The all in commercial is much better.

I’m looking forward to what NBC will do what the broadcasts and I’ll support them through thick or thin like I did when ESPN was forcing Harkes on us and FSC was/will be forcing their stable on us, but I was expecting to be wowed when I hit play on this and wasn’t.

No, that would be what they would do if they were trying to appeal to soccer fans

They’re not. They’re appealing to the casual sports fan.

I don't see how this ad appeals to the casual sports fan

Look at the ads the UFC ran while marketing the UFC on Fox event, they were more like the All In campaign and the ad linked just below, they were not like the ad above. During the UFC on Fox broadcast, they did the slower build up character back story ads once they had the captive audience, not during the commercials that ran in the months leading up to the event.

I think that may be why NBC sports went with the ad from the original post

It’s not just another montage of celebrations, goals, and cool flicks. This one does stand out in comparison to other mls ads.

Stood out for the wrong reasons for me, Soccr is boring, their ads are boring too

It’s too intellectual for the casual sports fan, it’s tries to hard to be analogous, sports is exciting and fast, except for baseball, the ads should reflect that, let everything else provide the contrast.

When watching the Apple cup on Versus

i saw other commercials in this style for other sports the network will be covering. Its part of the theme of commercials for this network. The fact that they are showing MLS in the same light as the other sports is an important thing to take away from this I think.

"The fans are excited. And the stadium, well, it ignites with explosion."

It works with Ovechkin because he's a global star and one of the best in the world

This is the only one I could find, and it’s good, I like it a lot, I know Ovechkin, I’ve seen his singing car commercial, I’ve seen him and Crosby have their battles, it works.

If they did something like this with Beckham or Donovan, but 3 LA Galaxy players that are borderline US Internationals is just a failure on NBC’s part I think, it’s like they threw something together with some MLS players as an afterthought, I’m starting to feel insulted by this ad, I expect more from them and look forward to it, but I still think this commercial sucks.

This advert is about the conversion of versus to NBC sports

and part of that campaign which includes other sports (hockey has one, as will others). It is not an ad about MLS, but a campaign that includes MLS.

If ESPN were to launch ESPN4 would it include MLS at all?

Still lacks excitement, same rules apply, sports is about competition and wow moments

See the Root Sports rebrand ads from FSN.

I don’t think the ad is a total failure, nice production value, but it did little for me to see a few LA players in a tunnel juggling a ball.

I'm excited to see what NBC can do

They did a great job with Hockey and the Tour de France. They are currenlty working their magic on Indy car racing. They seem to do a good job picking announcers and promoting what is cool about a sport.

I’m hoping that they can move the needle just a bit for the sport.
