Re-Entry Draft Stage One Targets
With today's list of players available in the Re-Entry Draft it is important to note the differences between the two stages. In Stage One a player would be pickup up at their current option value, or a "Bona Fide Offer." Now, not all players on today's list will be available in Monday's draft (Seattle holds pick 14). The higher contract players (say Bobby Boswell) may be negotiated down with their current team, but this must be complete by Friday afternoon.
But, if Adrian Hanauer, Sigi Schmid and Chris Henderson want to go bargain hunting, players under 60k probably aren't going to get renegotiated even lower. There are two types of players the Seattle Sounders may be interested in acquiring through the RED - depth on the backline, veteran forward.
Danleigh Borman and Jonathon Leathers fit in that first category. Both are inexpensive, and while note starting quality on the Sounders would help rebuild from the losses of Riley and Wahl. Borman is a left back/left mid who didn't look good with Toronto FC. That may have little meaning. Leathers is primarily a right back with experience at in the center and on the left. Both are nearing their peak period - Borman is 25, Leathers 26. They aren't the answer on the backline but either one let's Michael Tetteh get a softer entry into more playing time in MLS, while Leathers also helps reduce the learning curve of a converted mid to right back project and provides a little 5th CB cover.
There's one veteran forward of interest. Maykel Galindo has a Hanauer/Sounders history and is also inexpensive. No longer capable of being a regular rotational player Galindo does have some success in MLS when healthy. At 30 he's the same relative age as today's two forwards whose options were declined. Adding the Cuban would be so a natural forward would be the 5th choice rather than midfielders or draftees sliding up, though the Formidfender probably gets some of those minutes.

Perhaps...
Danleigh Borman? I watched a number of NYRB games in 2010 when he was there (was living in NJ at the time). He seemed serviceable and is a position that we could use some depth at.
…and Devon McTavish (only for the reason that we could call him “Soap;” I know the spelling is different)
We'd have to give him a Mohawk
And an M4. Or a P90. Or an M-14EBR with Thermal Scope.
Leathers is not a bad player for defensive depth
Especially for essentially nothing. I’d snap him up in a heartbeat. Borman… has his moments, and has speed, but not a whole lot else. Fun player to watch when he’s playing well, though, and if Leathers is gone he might be worth a gamble.
Danny Earls?
I realize he’s not there, and this is slightly off topic….. but still taken back that he was traded for peanuts, cut by Seattle, picked up mid-year, played in only 4 games, and then was on their protected list. That’s like putting David Estrada on our protected list….something doesn’t compute.

I think they had to protect him because they didn't have enough internationals protected.

I think his international status had something to do with it
At the same time, Nyassi is an international, and last off-season they decided to trade for Nyassi right after they traded away Earls. (And I think a bit part of the reason they traded away Earls and Baudet was to reduce their international count so they could protect an additional domestic player.)
Do any of the MLS replacement level guys interest me?
No.
I realize we’ll have to use some, but wasn’t the whole point of the Sounders pursuits in life to be above the replacement-level MLS guy? I guess if one of these guys rocks set pieces, or has a niche we need… I’m still waiting to see if we can do anything above and beyond the Pete Vagenases of the world.
Seattle will certainly add talent above replacement level
but they also will need a replacement level player or two. There isn’t cap space to add 4 good or better players unless 2 or more of them are the next Mauro Rosalesss

As you say, looking bad at TFC doesn't mean much
Making players look bad is TFC’s superpower. The trick is figuring out whether this player is afflicted by their bad mojo or actually does suck and just happens to also be at TFC.
A few look like they could be decent pickups
Leathers, Sassano, Phelan, Cristman, Lowry could all add good depth in their respective positions. And all are fairly young and beginning their peak years.
Seattle doesn't really need any midfielders though
I count 7 that are starting quality right now, plus Carrasco and Levesque who will get plenty of time as well.

In general I agree
But for some of those guys I’m thinking maybe a defensive conversion. I’ve seen Phelan play D before, although mostly used in mid. Sassano I believe played D in college as well but that information I can’t fully back up as it was just commentary I’d read a while back. And we could always use another forward. Cristman looks like a good, inexpesnive depth option.
I also think McTavish would be a good pickup for defensive depth. I don’t have a strong opinion either way of him but B&RU guys like him well enough, and he’s cheap.

no phelan, please...
…seeing him get minutes ahead of any youngins would be extremely frustrating, and his D isn’t nearly skillful enough to make a good transition.
Galindo doesn't seem a good move
I’m basing my opinion on his two season with the USL Sounders where he looked in over his head (speaking of ‘head’, he was another of our forwards who refused to head the ball despite being a big boy usually playing alone up front — did anyone notice how Keller always booted the ball to Roger if he was on the pitch because he’s the only one who’d play it?). Did he end up playing well at Chivas? Is Welton also tempting us? Put me in the category who thinks we just made some painful personnel cuts of utility role players so why bring in someone else’s?
Galindo has a 12 goal season so he's not awful when younger and healthy
All of the players listed here are as cheap as the utlity players cut, and younger. They have a bit of use, though the Front Office may think they can get equal talent from the draft or minimum contract international signings.

Galindo's USL Sounders stats; I would love to see him back
You may question his age, durability, head-ability, size, etc , but you cannot question Galindo’s USL credentials. He was SMOKING for us in 2005-06 . . . when he played.
After joining the Sounders at the end of 2005 (and scoring in the playoffs) Maykel got injured in an early season friendly in 2006, breaking his nose on Preston Burpo’s knee, (who had just started playing for Chivas). When Maykel finally did return 2 months later, he was on fire: he finished the year with 4 goals and 4 assists in 9 games. That equates to 1.75 pts/90 mins, better than any MLS Sounder has done in any season. (Fredy’s high is 1.30 pts/90 min, in 2011)
And as Dave pointed out, his production did not drop when he moved up a division with Chivas in 2007:12 goals and 5 assists = 1.29 pts/90 min
His injuries are, to me, the main concern. If we could get 8-12 games and 3-5 goals out of him, I think we should take him at that price.
Besides, he promised to return:
