Re-Entry Draft Stage 2: Unexciting And Expensive
There was a time when I liked a couple players in the MLS Re-Entry Draft for the Seattle Sounders to pick up in Stage Two and talk into less money. First Bobby Boswell renegotiated with the Houston Dynamo and then Bobby Convey went to Sporting Kansas City at a cut rate (rumors say 200K$). Now the list of available players is absent of the really appealing names.
When Seattle passed on all the cheap talent in stage one you can be nearly certain they won't make a pick of the under 60k players in stage two. But there may be the need for an MLS veteran keeper to be the #2 behind Michael Gspurning, a 5th forward has an appeal as well and of course any depth on the backline is needed. Except this round is expensive.
Seattle probably passes in Stage Two. They can count on their ability to scout internationally for some rotational level talent, while supplementing the reserves from their private combine fueled draft. Any player not picked in Monday's Stage Two is a free agent within and outside MLS.
Here are all players still available that made 60K$ or more in 2011 (h/t to B&RU);

Clyde Simms
This would be an interesting pick for the right price.
Is Husidic
actually named after Roberto Baggio? Baggio’s skied penalty kick to lose the World Cup in 1994 is my first soccer memory. I was 10.

Ugh, I was 8.

Following a world cup by clippings sent in the mail
while in Basic Training is very difficult.

Jeff Cunningham?
Seriously? Seattle couldn’t use him for 10-15-minute spurts?
no, they couldn't
Whose minutes, or roster spot for that matter, would you have him take?

Talk him down to Noonan's salary
If he refuses, then release him. That being said, I don’t have much confidence in Cunningham at this point in his career and wouldn’t be in favor of him coming to Seattle.

Maicon Santos
Of what I have seen from him he has some pretty good skills and if we could get him to take a cut to Noonan levels he wouldn’t be too bad of a pick up. My guess is that we pick at least one player to trade.
if Sigi wanted Noonan as a steadying voice of experience...
why wouldn’t he be willing to take a flyer on his former pupil (twice) Hejduk as a “locker room guy” who could be an experienced training player/teacher and a spot fill-in who won’t be intimidated by games in Mexico or elsewhere? Yes, he’s a million years old…but he’s also had a great career.
Because if we want to beat the Gals
we shouldn’t take their trash and expect to compete

If the Galaxy took that theory they wouldn't have added Hejduk from Columbus

True
but didn’t he make only a handful of appearances for them? Plus he was subsequently dropped. He seems expendable. Not worth 100k anyway.

That being said, he's worth more than playing a 17 year old
so if we can’t find anyone to play RB then I guess it’s worth it. I just hope we have our standards set a bit higher.

I would trust Sigi on this one...
having had him as a young player and as a player in his prime, he should have plenty of insight into Frankie’s value. It may be that this lead him to not even consider him for a moment….maybe vice versa. I have no idea. I do see the Ever Alvarado rumors heating up a bit (the source for them was the same as the source for the Mora rumors). At what point do we get into trouble with losing so many non-intl players and replacing them with intls? (Keller-Gspurning, Riley-Mora [probably], and then Noonan, Jaqua and Wahl. I know we were in great shape with all the greencards…but that’s 5 slots lost.
The FO works very fast on those greencards
We might hear that a couple of our internationals have qualified for green cards during the off-season leaving some spots open for the winter window.
Fernandez should have his this year

Is there any way we take someone only to engineer some sort of trade?
Kinda like what we did last season with Seitz. I know the situation was different, but seems like we could somehow grab an extra pock or something in the superdraft.

Goalkeepers
I think that if I were to sign a #2 goalkeeper, I would take Steve Cronin or Zach Thornton. However, I happen to think that the Sounders should save the cap space that a #2 GK would take and use it on field players. Yes, I believe we would be content with Gspurning, Ford and Meredith. I mean Ford and Meredith competing all week to be the #2 and start reserve games would seem to lead them improving real quick.
No one on there blows me away
Simms is the most interesting on the list. I’ve always thought he was one of the better players on DCU’s roster before Ben Olsen starting bringing in better, younger talent. However, I’m pretty confident with Carrasco as a back up and he comes at a fraction of the cost.
Hunter Freeman could be a good pick up. I don’t know if he would work as a first choice right back for Seattle and those are the wages he currently commands. He would be a good back-up, but would need to make a lot less to fit in a cap constrained Sounders team.
Zach Thornton would be a good back-up, but I’d be happy with staying with Ford and Meredith as the #2 and #3. Even better would be prying Frei from Toronto if they’ll give him up easily.
Jonathan Leathers is also available at $42,000
After posting this comment I looked at the extended list on Black & Red United. Jonathan Leathers is a youngish right back that could fill in as a back-up.
I think he looked worse than he actually was in the 2nd half of last season due to the chaos of Tommy Soehn’s frequent line-up changes on the back line.
I won’t claim he’s starting quality for a Sounders team, but he can fill that huge gap at the back-up RB spot. He’s also dirt cheap.
Seattle skipped on Leathers at the minimum already
He was one of three I highlighted for Stage One.

I would take Cronin
If we could get him to come down to 50k I would take Cronin as my back up. Prior to his injury last year I thought he looked decent and would be an experienced back up to Gspurning. Sigi and Adrian seem uncomfortable having either Merideth or Ford be the back up and Cronin represents a cheap seasoned option.
I think he only knows how to punch the ball
Not actually catch or save…
I was surprised to see how much Adin Brown was being paid. I thought he was Portland’s third stringer.

He started as back-up
They had a series of injury issues though so Brown got two starts.

Definitely Cronin
he’s a seasoned veteran who knows what he’s doing. Obviously with multiple competitions, the Sounders will need a good backup. He made $72k this past year but I think he’d take an offer of $50-55k with us.
Ngwenya as a 5th up front?
Seems like he had a few special moments this past year.
Currently too expensive, but how low do you think he’d play for?
not someone i want

Acorrding to the MLS website the draft is now on the 19th
I love how MLS just changes things on the fly. I wish we could be more profesional.
Odd
The subheadline refers to Monday, with the implication of the next Monday (which would be the original schedule) and then the story says Monday the 19th.
Press Release says Monday the 12th.
