Pac-"12" soccer threatening to become Pac-5 with SDSU leaving
Despite the name, the Pac-12 only has 6 schools that play soccer, and it gets to that number by including a school that isn't part of the Pac-12 in the major sports - San Diego State. Now SDSU is moving to the Big West. Only having 5 teams would prevent the Pac-12 from playing in the NCAA tournament, but it sounds like they'll hold on to SDSU until a replacement can be found.

Wow.
I had no idea so few Pac 12 schools had soccer teams. I’m most shocked to see USC without a squad. And I would think that at least one of the AZ schools would have something going.
In case people weren't aware..
Its UW, UCLA, Stanford, California and Oregon State who have teams.
Men's teams
All 12 Pac-12 schools proper have women’s teams. I wonder if it would be easier for some of these schools to start PDL teams than it would be for them to start NCAA teams. (Like BYU has done.)
Here at WSU
I’ve never understood why we don’t have a men’s Pac 12 soccer team, the women’s team is fairly popular and plays pretty well, but there seems to be zero drive for a men’s team. It’s unfortunate and hopefully will change some time. There are a ton of intramural soccer teams and clubs, even the veterinary school has an intramural team, but nothing official getting even a percentage of attention the men’s football and basketball team does.

It's all about Title 9
WSU doesn’t have a men’s Pac 12 soccer team because of the scholarship balance/ratio mandated by Title 9 compliance. If they offered scholarships and played men’s soccer they would have to add a women’s sport, or an equal number of scholarships for women.
Maybe with the Pac12 TV money coming in, that might be a possibility, once football (OK – American football, Gridiron, whatever floats your boat) stadium renovations and the like get finished.
And before anyone rails away about the unfairness of THAT….. revenue from D1 football and basketball pay the bills for ALL the other sports.
So, some time in the not too distant future, men’s soccer and women’s softball will probably both be added.
For now…I agree that it’s too bad not to have either of them at WSU.
I agree
Hopefully it’s something Pac-12 money and/or Larry Scott’s passion for Olympic sports will help remedy.
I even wrote about it once! (shameless plug)

I would love for WSU to have a men's team
But its probably not going to happen, at least not in the next 20 years

what a joke
and a disgrace. I can’t believe it. Each of these institutions are quite large and have more than enough resources to have soccer programs. No wonder we fell so far behind in the development of the sport in this country. I’m pretty sure most high schools have both programs, but these major universities don’t? Absolutely pathetic.
