December Q&A
We'll try to do these monthly during the off-season, and why not on the first Friday of a month? Jeremiah and I will answer questions to the best of our knowledge without violating any sources' trust. In addition here are two nuggets
So ask away, one of us will be around for a while. Maybe other writers drop by too, but I didn't warn them.

Frei? Really?
As a back-up to Gspurnning? Or is that deal not as a done as people think?

I imagine there are some red tape issues. Plus, I’m sure team would love to unveil a player at the End of Year Business Meeting.

He would me more cap friendly.
How much of a drop off between the two? Are we talking 5 more goals, less?
Keep in mind...
That Frei made $155k last year and has allowed more goals over the past three seasons than any other GK in MLS. That’s obviously not all his fault, but doesn’t exactly scream “player just waiting to win a MLS Cup.”

His save percentage was 68%
That’s within a single percentage point of Rimando and Hartman. I would blame the GAA more on poor defense and possession by the players in front of him. Those guys were much closer to a 1.00 GAA. The biggest difference is the talent of their respective teammates. I’m not saying he’s my first choice to start, but I think he’d do well here.

This years O'Brien White
Terrible there, but was good here (in his short sample size).
And yet, Milos Kocic was .5 goals better per game
Playing behind basically the same defense.

So we're giving up additional cap space for a backup keeper?
I don’t see it.

I don't Seattle losing cap space
they need that room, so it makes no sense of say just Ianni for just Frei
I am not a Supporter | I am not a Fan | I am a Sounder
Sounder At Heart
Right. It would have to be Iannia and someone else.
For a backup keeper. Given the minutes that backup keepers accrue with this team I really don’t see it happening. I would agree with sentiments posted elsewhere that our connection with Frei (assuming there is one) would evaporate if we wound up signing Gspurning.
Well, backup keepers didn't accrue minutes when backing up Keller
That doesn’t mean they won’t get minutes in 2012
I am not a Supporter | I am not a Fan | I am a Sounder
Sounder At Heart
I agree
I don’t see the team acquiring a back up keeper with Meredith and Ford already in the fold and needing minutes to develop. The Sounders need a starting GK and then they need to use their remaining cap space to strengthen the defense.
Ianni is more important than a back up keeper. The third CB is going to see a lot more minutes than the second keeper.
The link implies that NYRB are pursuing him as well
Not sure how much the rumor has developed since the post. It’s also possible SSFC are only in the running until the Gspurning deal goes final.

Toronto perspective: Ianni would not be enough even more so if Seattle would certainly want allocation money along with him. TFC can’t be giving up allocation lightly when you consider that we have 3 DP’s on the books all of next season.
Yes we need help in the back line, even with Cann and Williams both likely to be fit for the start of camp, but if Ianni is the best offer that comes to the table for Frei I hope they just keep him.
Writer for Toronto FC blog Waking The Red

Just remember--Ianni's no slouch
The dude was an anchor in one of the best defenses in the league two years ago. He can also play a passable defensive mid and is quite strong in the air.
FRIMPONG ought always be written in full caps #DEEEEEEENCH
I would take the deal player for player but if TFC are giving up allocation along with Frei that is the sticking point for me. From talking with management around TFC they want to add allocation not send it away
Writer for Toronto FC blog Waking The Red
http://wakingthered.com/
Even so I think it'd be a good deal for the Sounders
Ianni has performed well, but is clearly out of favor with Sigi. He’s probably overall better than (or at least as good as) any of the CBs currently in Toronto, though.

Regardless of whether Frei would be coming to Seattle
… is he really worth offloading for Pa Dembo Touray?
Considering they already have a fairly decent keeper
I would say yes, because they can get something FOR Frei as well.
I am not a Supporter | I am not a Fan | I am a Sounder
Sounder At Heart
The logic of it for TFC is that Kocic is then made starter and we bring in a new backup and in the end the two keepers salaries would combine to be less than what we are currently having to pay Frei for next season.
So we trade him for something, then sign a keeper like Touray and have possibly as much as 100k in extra cap space saved on keepers so that will pay for the player we get in the trade and help sign someone else.

Good question...
I think O’Brian White might be the best ideal world fit. He has that combination of size and holding ability that neither Fucito nor Ochoa have really displayed. But I’m not sure he’ll ever be 100 percent.

I’m biased, but I think that Fucito showed well last year and deserves more time.

I think it should vary according to the matchup
For instance, Fucito was more effective against RSL than Ochoa. There were other opponents against whom Ochoa’s style was more effective. I don’t think we have anyone that should obviously be starting every week alongside Montero, so I think a rotation of Fucito, Ochoa, and White can be pretty effective.

How do you see the team working in all our wingers\mids this coming year.
Assuming everyone is heathly. Do we see Flaco in the middle? Does B-Rad move to RB?
That's the million dollar question, I think...
Evans at RB is definitely one option, as is putting Estrada there. I’d love to see Flaco in the middle. But these things have a way of working themselves out.

...why is Carrasco never considered for a switch to the back line?
He’s athletic and very tough. He’s frequently TOO physical in the midfield. I would love to see how he would do back there.
Shifting Carrasco then makes a hole at 2nd CDM

That would make more sense
He’s 3rd or 4th CDM (depends on how you view Seamon), so that shift would make sense. He also has more time as a RB and CB already, and is noted as a decent passer.

But presumably he didn’t all of a sudden hate the ball because he heard other people hating it. I presume he hated it all along.
Put it this way, when everyone in the world was bashing the ball, Keller could have said, “you know, we’ve been using that ball for a while and you get used to it.” Instead he said, “I’m pretty well known for my honesty and that’s the worst ball I’ve ever played with in my life.”

Definitely not zero
I think team will definitely look at Evans at RB, but I don’t see Zakuani being moved to forward. He just doesn’t really offer the kind of skills that I think are a plus there, since he plays almost entirely facing the goal. I haven’t seen lots of film of him at forward in college, but I’m sure he had lots of freedom to track back to receive the ball, and that’s very much NOT something the Sounders want whoever is paired with Montero to do.

What pick do the Sounders have?
Do they pick 18th because they finished second in the SS? Or do they pick like 15th because of where they finished in the playoffs?
Thanks
Talk about a silly way to run a railroad. The idea that the second best regular season team moves up the draft order by three slots because of the MLS Cup is just silly. But the Sounders will take it.
The NFL does the same thing.
The Seahawks ended up making the playoffs last season., so they did not pick in the area where a normal 7-9 team picks. Then, they beat the Saints in the first round of the playoffs and moved back in the draft again.
RSL beat the Sounders in the playoffs and will pick behind them. I don’t have a problem with that.

In its MLS existence, the Sounders have never had a complete player at any of the outside back positions. By complete I mean: solid dependable defensive presence and consistent offensive threat.
I am not Dave or Jeremiah but I would argue that you could rephrase that to read:

His form last season didn’t seem up to his first couple seasons in the league, but I really like Kevin Alston on New England. From how they worded it though
it seemed as if they caught it early which if key when dealing with compartment syndrome. I agree with you that it’s definitely serious but not to the point of hope and pray. But with how vague/mum the FO has been since I can see where you are coming from.
I thought I saw somewhere Zak mentioning nerve damage in his foot.
That he had areas with a complete lack of sensitivity. I don’t know if this has since been remedied, but it seems a problematic issue for a soccer player.
I wasn't aware the nerve damage was a result of the compartment syndrome
I thought it was due to his original injury. If so I rescind my prior statement, that’s far more serious.
Do you think Tettah is still being groomed as a future left back?

Thats kind of what I'm afraid of.
His playing style wouldn’t really fit with our inverted Left wing style. We need a left back that can get forward wide and send in a cross or two since our midfielders are already so far inside.
"The fans are excited. And the stadium, well, it ignites with explosion."
Is it going to suck sharing C-Link
with the Huskies now? If we make a good playoff run will that make it more complicated?
And speaking of playoffs, on a scale of 1-10 how unfair is it to have the team with the best regular season record host the final in a completely unbalanced/conference based regular season?

I’d put my money on DeAndre Yedlin. But really, I could see it being another year or two before we sign one. There’s absolutely no rush.

I admittedly don't know much about Yedlin, other than he's a RB, a position of need.
What’s holding him back from contributing for the first team? Size? Experience?
The jump from college to pros is enormous

4. Open Cup

MLS Cup win
It’s the title that is recognized as the best team in MLS. Regardless of what I think of the playoffs, that’s just how it is. I guarantee Mexican teams are more excited about winning the Primera than CCL, so it’s hard for me to feel like winning CCL is as big of a deal as winning our own tournament.

In the long term picture I think winning the CCL would be the biggest thing for any MLS team since it makes teams trying in that competition more of a trendy thing in a way. I think that for Seattle though winning the MLS Cup would mean more though because of the years of playoff issues. For the MLS as a whole winning the CCL would be huge

Also, one more question..
is Mike Fucito part of the Sounders’ future plans? I am asking because I am a huge fan of the church and it just seems like Sigi has never favoured Fucito. And not to mention Sigi has a preference for a big body target forward – which Mike Fucito isn’t – which Ochoa and White are. Could he possible be part of the Frei to Seattle deal? I would really hate to see Fucito leave. Someone tell me im just being paranoid.
If you listen to the last Nos Audietis
you’ll learn that the team made a sudden move to keep Montreal from picking Fucito. So they at least value him that much.
Nos Audietis

Evans, DP sitch
Is there something about Evans, that I’m not seeing, like does he really do the “small things” that wins us games when he plays. Because I can’t find any good reasons besides the fact he could score penalties why he is still on this team or maybe he’s Sigi’s secret son. Also for our third DP, if Rosales is not the one to get the third DP spot, do you think we use the spot this offseason, and if so for what position(player you would like to see here?).
Evans has strong tactical awareness
decent touch, better than average passing though mainly in a possession manner rather than attacking, he’s decent in the air as well, his on ball defense is probably slightly above average but not impressive.
If the cap room is where I think it is if Rosales isn’t a DP they’d only have room for a youth DP. I’d love to find like East African 19 year old Gareth Bale or something.

What do you think about starting Alonso and Carrasco in the middle
Assuming we get a couple of fullbacks with the ability to contribute more on offense and push forward, do you think it’s possible that Sigi might start two CDMs in the middle to cover the back line for counters? Would it even be advisable to try that strategy or would that be giving up too much in Alonso’s ability to contribute in the offensive third?
I don't like that shape for Seattle
It would require Alonso to become more like a CM, which isn’t a bad thing, but it also loses the abilities of one of the following players – Evans, Friberg, Alvaro. Those are good players who need playing time.

The Seattle Sounders are just reDQulous
More or less playing time?
based on these numbers, in the opions of everyone at SAH, do you the following players will get more, or less playing time during the 2012 season?
*Roger Levesque: 29 apps, 15 starts, 1,548 mins.
*Lamar Neagle: 34 apps, 18 starts, 1,725 mins.
*Mike Fucito: 29 apps, 18 starts, 1,568 mins.
*David Estrada: 5 apps, 3 starts, 241 mins.
*Servando Carrasco: 19 apps, 11 starts, 1,078 mins.
All stats come directly from Soundersfc.com
I suppose that depends on a number of factors
Such as: Will Roger/Estrada make the full time switch to RB? Will SSFC bring in players that make a specific player surplus? Will Zak be fully ready to go (particularly relevant for Neagle)? Injuries, of course, are always a factor.
In general, I think Roger’s minutes will go down, Neagle’s will stay about the same, Fucito’s will go down (with Ochoa having a full preseason), Estrada’s will go up (assuming he plays some outside back this year), and Carrasco’s will stay about the same.
FRIMPONG ought always be written in full caps #DEEEEEEENCH
Realistically, what can we expect out of the new fullbacks?
What type of players will be signed, do you think – starters or backups? What attributes do they need to have in order be qualify for Sigi’s ‘improved play’ mandate at those positions? Any realistic thoughts about who the Sounders might get besides Mora (as I noticed a serious lack of enthusiasm here for him)?
I'd guess at least one starter
Otherwise the fullback battle is between Zach Scott and whoever converts from the midfield. I’d prefer a U23 player at RB.

Outside Backs
Do you think it’s possible that the Sounders might pick up a young left or right back and give him DP money? Like a 19 or 20 year old outside back from South America that could really add to our offense and would cost much less against the cap hit than regular DP’s.
This is a possible reason that Rosales hasn't been announced as a DP
Because there is certainly room for a youth DP.

Riley
I recently emailed Mr. Oshan about the last (horrible episode of their podcast) I should have CC ed Mr. Campeau the message is the James Riley. He is the man. I am sounder fan and I have local pride and when you throw Riley under the bus its so f-ing irritating . He was a hard working good defensive sounder. Who you dont give enough credit. He was the best consistent defensive player for the last 3 years, who made a big difference in our community. I think you should show much more respect to him. Arlo White wanted to go. James Riley tried his hardest to be an effective player and member of the community. Instead of celebrating Arlo you should be thanking Riley. With that said my question is how sure are you Riley and Wahl were given up for Fucito?
I think you are overstating our defenses abilities
While I have absolutely no doubt that Riley is an amazing human being, he was only a good defender. We were scored upon this year more then anyone except New York, and New York didn’t have Kasey Keller. While it’s certainly not all on Riley’s head, he had his fair share of mistakes.
Also, of course Arlo wanted to go. You think that if an EPL team came knocking for Riley or any other Sounder that they wouldn’t leave in a heartbeat? Arlo was offered arguably the best announcing gig for soccer in the United States.

I don’t know that we threw him under the bus at all. He was an awesome guy and an adequate player. I loved his motor, but he was neither a great defender, a great ball handler nor a great passer. After reading your comment, I don’t hate you guys any more. In fact I will say I appreciate what you guys do. But I still think Riley deserves more credit then you guys give him. I don’t think that anyone who has started for us for 3 years could be anything but good. We are to much of a quality team. Our GA stat certainly does not fall on riley’s shoulders. Like just about every team in the league we lack some what in the defense. While that is true there are many other factors that lead to that stat which are more due to our style of play. At any rate in my opinion Riley deserves much respect.

While I’m not the sounders book keeper and don’t claim to know much about their financial situation. I do know that their are a decent few team with their own stadium. Including the new born timbers, I know there are a lot of factors involved, but I tend to believe there is the means to do this.
Those stadiums are also too small to suit the Sounders needs.
Realistically we’d be talking something like a 40k-45k seat stadium. That costs a lot more to build than 15k-20k.
by Aaron Campeau on Dec 6, 2011 1:19 PM PST up reply actions
Yea i would hope at least 45k. But i think realistically probably none of us are any where near having an authoritative view of whether or not its financially viable to build the Sounders their own stadium. Unless Paul Allen is on the site. As bad ass as it would be to have our own stadium. I hope at least we will eventually get a grass field. At any rate my question to Aaron Campeau, Jeremiah oshan, and dave clark is what is your back grounds with soccer? Have you played pro, semi pro, or college?
