Who will be the next Captain?
EDITOR'S NOTE: Move to the front page for the sake of discussion on this rather dull weekend. - Jeremiah
Very simple question: who will replace Kasey Keller as captain of the Sounders this season?
Some thought it might be Riley: it clearly won't now. I've included some likely possibilities, as well as an 'other' option. I chose not to include Zach Scott on the short list - although he is currently captain by default, I don't for-see him starting enough next season to justify him being full captain. Have at it, and justify your picks in the comments section.

I would like to see Mauro as the Captain
Mauro is the sage veteran on this team. His pedigree, work ethic, role on the team and willingness to play last season for the league minimum will carry tremendous weight. He also appears to be reasonably bilingual. It was easy to forget that Kasey spoke German and Spanish.
This team has a strong Latin American core. If the FO’s current forays into Central America lead to additional international signings, the team could routinely field a team where 7 of the starting 11 have Spanish as their first language. Mauro will have the on field presence to wear the Captain’s band.
Parke is also a veteran and Evans elevated his game when he was asked to wear the band. Much will depend on Sigi and who is playing. But for me, all things being equal, the armband should go to Mauro most games.
Parke
I perhaps view the captaincy a little different. Most important to me is the role as the teams representative to interface with the officials. Because I am uncertain of Rosales’ command of English, I chose sParkles. He should be on the field most matches and appears to have the level headed demeanor needed to be effective in that role.
If being the on-pitch team leader is the priority then Rosales is the man for me. With or without the ball he orchestrates the attack more than any other Sounder. He doesn’t need the armband to do that effectively. But then I have never been one to be impressed by titles or trappings of authority. Alonso gets points deducted for lesser command of English and he seems less verbal.
You can rest assured that Rosales' English is perfectly fine
He has no problem at all communicating with English-only reporters and would imagine he has an even easier time communicating with refs.

Then I want to change my vote
Sounds like the man can do everything.
He's #TheTrialist
of course he can do everything!

Rosales for me
He was reportedly a huge positive influence in the locker room and is a definite leader on the field, by example and at least occasionally verbally. He’s also the guy who orchestrates a lot of the play out there and tends to have a very necessary attitude vis-a-vis the reffing (i.e. mostly just get on with it, call or no).
I think Alonso is too combative, although also a key on-field presence.
This ones a no brainier.
Age, role, experience, demeanor, respect. It’s Rosales.
However, with a GK as a captain, we almost never had to think about 2nd and 3rd captains. Rosales isn’t playing 90 min every game. So we need a list of preferred captains depending on who’s in.
So if not Roslaes, I’d go Evans, Ozzie, Fredy.

Sigi's got a man crush on Evans
He’s regularly referred to as a “coach on the field.” It won’t make a lot of people happy, but I bet the armband goes to number 3.
FRIMPONG ought always be written in full caps #DEEEEEEENCH
Should be Mauro...
He could communicate most effectively with his teammates and refs, is from all accounts a great locker room presence, isn’t a whiner on the pitch, is selfless (playing for min. last year), and appears dedicated to being around for at least the next few years.
I would have voted for Alonso had it not been for his abrasiveness on the pitch from time to time. Its a great characteristic for a CDM, but may not be so great when communicating with referees.
That being said, Sigi’s love for Evans makes me think that he will give it to Brad if it is the coaches choice. If its player vote – likely Mauro.
Evans
Cause Sigi is going to Troll the internet so hard…

Mauro might be the most qualified leader on the team
But I don’t think that necessarily makes him Captain. I don’t think a winger is a first choice, too removed from the center of the pitch which is where the Referee usually is, it’s an added burden for a position that needs all the energy possible for runs, same reasons I wouldn’t give it to Forward. For me, it’s Keeper, Center Back, or Center Mid preferably defensive, both for their central positioning and their ability to see the field of play in front of them and have a bigger picture view. Arguments can be made for Full Backs but again, I’m thinking more along the lines of first choices so even if Riley was here, great leader, not Captain, also he can get heated at times which is a liability for that role.
Gspurning is too new, I think that’s unanimously obvious from the 2 votes for Other in the above poll, Keeper is out.
Alonso is a good choice, I don’t know that he’d be comfortable in the position for various reasons, Referee discussions which he doesn’t get in to often other than blowing them off or throwing out a quick compalint, the amount of yellows he accumulates, his English which is still coming along, etc. I love the Honey Badger, but I don’t think he’s Captain.
Evans would be a great choice if he wasn’t often injured, he can’t stay on the pitch, love him but he’s not Captain. If Sigi makes him Captain, we’ll have confirmation of exactly how much he values him with Brad colored glasses.
Hurtado doesn’t seem like a leader to me. He’s a great player, he seems like a loyal teammate, he works as hard as anyone on the pitch, but for the same reasons I would have problems giving the armband to Alonso, I would have problems giving it to Hurtado.
Which brings me to Parke. He’s a veteran. He’s a leader. He’s vocal. He often discusses things with the Ref in a good manner. He doesn’t accumulate yellows. He doesn’t get heated often. He seems to captain the back line already and organize them along with Keller who is no more. I’ve got to give it to Parke.

Assumptions
For one, I don’t see how you could possibly say that a winger is more removed from the action than a keeper is, especially on our team where we play with such a free-flowing style where the two wingers routinely switch fields even. But you’re also assuming that Rosales will even be a winger next season. He may end up playing there but for me with Zakuani coming back, if he recovers, we’d be best off playing with Zak and Fernandez on the outside with Rosales orchestrating from the center of the field with Ozzie. It just seems like you’d want all four of them on the field at the same time as much as possible becuase they are the four best midfielders we have.

I would go with either Evans or Rosales
Rosales has a lot of experience, is well liked, and is bilingual, but, at least when it comes to interviews I recall, he seems almost too modest.
Alonso, is a no. Yes, he’s one of the best players on the team, but I don’t consider him a leader.
Montero has worn the captain’s armband before. I don’t know if that’s something to consider.
-Ben R.
Give it to the oldest starter
Since near as I can tell the primary role of captain is to call the coin toss and bring the other captain some schwag before kickoff, why not give it to the guy who’s always going to start? Or just give it to the oldest starter on a match-by-match basis thereby letting it be self-selecting?
I realize the captain interfaces with the officials with a little more immunity but I’m not convinced it’s an important aspect of the game. I don’t recall any contentious incidents where our field players remained quiet while yielding to Kasey as he presented our case. Also, at this level I expect each player is playing at their hardest regardless if a teammate is wearing an arm band to inspire him.
Parke was my choice
It was part instinctual and part reasoning. He’s probably now the starter who has the most experience in the MLS, and a leader of the backline. While I think Mauro will be a leader of the team, I think Parke will interface the best with the refs. I also don’t want the captain’s role distracting Mauro, as Thalas argues above. I think Parke would make an excellent captain, and I don’t see either Parke or Mauro getting caught up in a battle of egos.
But I’d really be okay with either.
Jeff Parke or Alonso should don the band...
Parke is veteran to the league, puts in minutes, sees the field at all times, he and El Presidente live closest to our ‘keeper (who always seem to have a grasp of the game, like a catcher in baseball), and he always seems to keep a level head. I do also like #TheTrialist as an option, and Alonso can do no wrong. With the amount that Alonso gets in on tackles, confronts chippy situations, and barks his opinion already, wearing the arm band will only gain him more respect within the league and with league officials. Plus Osvaldo is constantly in the run of play and around the ball which probably sways my vote his way, but I believe you can’t go wrong with either of these gentlemen.
I haven’t heard anybody argue that Guh-SHPERN-ing should be awarded this honor. I understand why not, but a ’keeper is always a good option, and I hope we got a future cpt. with this signing… thoughts?
Re: Gspurning...
The argument is pretty simple: He has played zero minutes with the team and no one hear knows anything about him aside from what they’ve read.

A small surprise:
only 2 votes so far for “other”? I feel like there were more people leaving Montero or Zakuani off their protected lists than have felt that someone other than the options presented should get the captain’s band. Not that I’d advocate it, but (almost) no votes for Gspurning, Friberg, Flaco, Zakuani or Hurtado?
I chose Mauro
but it was a difficult choice between Ozzie and Mauro. Mauro got the nod due to his English skills which would be necessary when dealing with the ref but Ozzie’s central location gives him a better view anything that might happen.
Rosales
Justification? Watching what happened to the team anytime he set foot on the pitch.

I remember, barely over a year ago...
…that the general assumption was that Ianni would get the captaincy once Kasey retired. Now, I’d think it questionable that Ianni might have a future with the team at all.
Personally, I think Parke would be the right kind of choice but, knowing Sigi, it’ll be Evans.
