Open Flavor Fridays - You know its wrong, but you still do it
Once again talking beer, wine, food and maybe other beverages. Others will talk coffee - I can't as it is my full time job.
Let's get a few things out of the way. If you are not of legal consumption age in your place of residence do not drink alcohol. Do not drink in excess, unless you are around people you know in a private place. NEVER, EVER drive drunk.
Click on for Open Flavor Fridays
Certain foods just aren't good for you. This includes nearly everything in the "fast food" category, but honestly quite a bit of items that are part of the typical American diet. It should include the alcoholic beverages as well.
One of those entrees that I can't help but order when I see it is biscuits and gravy. It takes my gut apart, but there is a comfort granted from the buttery goodness of a flaky biscuit with classic sausage gravy with its mild peppery notes draped across it. I don't go out for breakfast often, but this dish when served in a small town diner is a pure symbol of what that cook can do.
Another weakness I have is for grilled cheese, though this is always done at home. Whether created with the simplest of sliced breads, or the grandest of freshly baked loafs when lightly grilled with a selection of cheeses this is the sandwich that brings a smile to my face. Low temperatures are ideal, and I strongly recommend not just using an American or Cheddar, but play with other cheeses -any other cheese. My latest favorite version is one that I did with an Italian bread, some Gouda, a little bacon and a tomato.
What are your favorite foods that are bad for you? How have you gotten creative with cheese and bread?

I'll eat nearly anything with chocolate.
Which makes me healthy when there’s Skittles around, but doomed with M&Ms.
There’s not much better than ooey-gooey grilled cheese. If you want to hear an entertaining breakdown of the whats and hows of grilled cheese, check out the first episode of The Sporkful, my favorite food podcast. I don’t always agree with them, but they always entertain.
I am particularly partial to putting bacon and an egg on my burger, which definitely doesn’t help the health factor.
And I rarely say no to a donut, though luckily I don’t seek them out too often.
a personal favorite of mine
is essentially a grilled cheese bagel with an overeasy egg and bacon. To add a little twist, I cream cheese the bagel…so good.
and agreed about the m&ms cornchop…those are deadly

Grilled cheese
is best with cheddar and sriracha on it. Delicious!
I had a 90 Minute IPA for the first time this week, it was pretty good. Didn’t quite live up to the hype it had, but very enjoyable. At $12 for a four pack though, I won’t be buying it too often. I already thought stone was expensive at $11 for a six pack. It had a different kind of flavor than other hoppy beers I’m used to. I can’t really describe it, I want to say it had a mildly fruity, yeasty flavor. Not the straight hoppy kick in the mouth that I was hoping for/expecting. I can only imagine what it’s like at one of the brewpubs in Delaware.
Sriracha is big right now
Except I call it cock sauce. You know…because of the rooster.
They were talking it on NPR the other day.
Did you know there’s a sriracha cookbook now?
Where do I start?
I have a weakness for gyros. The combination of all the flavors, the lamb, the cucumber sauce, the pita, the red onion, anything else the cook chooses to use, does me in every time. So good.
Grilled cheese is always a good one, but I like to play with tuna fish sandwiches as well. Different mayos, different mustards, different seasonings, different cheeses shredded in to the mix. You can go a long time without having the same tuna fish sandwich twice with very little effort.
Chicken piccata is one of my specialties to cook at home, and it’s also a recipe I like to experiment with, since the base is so simple and flexible. So when I see it on a restaurant’s menu, I have a hard time not ordering it, because I want to see what they did with it, and if it’s something I might want to experiment with next time I make it.
But my major, damn-near-impossible-to-resist food weakness? Chicken and french fries, with whatever soda sounds good at the moment. So simple, but so tasty for some reason.

I'd be dead many, many, many times over myself.
Especially since I have a really good gyro shop just down the street from my apartment…

Well, good for US standards at least.
I’d imagine that the closer you get the the original source, the better they are. Although there is a place in Bellevue run by Greeks that moved here 20 or 30 years ago that have the best damn gyros I’ve ever tasted.

what's the name of the greek place?
I work in that area and I’m always looking for good food.
I can't remember offhand, haven't been down there in a few years
But it’s just off Main on Bellevue Way. Left-hand side of Bell Way heading towards downtown, blue text on the sign. Parking there is a bit tight as I recall, might be easier to park at the downtown park and walk, it’s around a quarter mile I think.

My fave place in the US is on the boardwalk in Santa Cruz
But I haven’t had it in 15 years…

That place is good...
I’ll say that I’m not a big Gyro man and perfer Schwarma or falafel when in those kinds of establishments. That said, Mr. Gyro (the name sucks but give it a chance) on Greenwood and 85th and also in Ballard is really, really good. Like I said, I’m not a gyro guy, but their falafel and schwarma are awesome.

Gyros in seattle
Anyone know where you can get a quality gyro in seattle? I also got addicted when I was living in Berlin.
Before you start making fun of my for getting kraut and spetzle on my gyro I should point out that Berlin’s the city with the second largest turkish population coming in right after Istanbul. That makes Germany-Turkey matches extra fun to watch. :)
I'm no connoisseur...
but there is a place up by my apartment. Mr. Gyros around 85th Ave and Greenwood. Its pretty good. Its tiny, but it seems pretty popular. Lots of people lined up every time i go there. And its cheap! Bonus!
Cheap and big.
They have another location as of about 6 months ago, 56th st & 20th ave, one block north of Market in Ballard.
Around the Greenwood location there are about 5 or 6 greek places within about 2 blocks. It’s like a mini greek town.
We eat plenty here:

We used to go to the walk-up window Cedars in the U-District, which had great gyros/falafels, but they closed down and this is our replacement, which is nearly as good.
Nos Audietis
Cedars -> Saffron Grill
Cedars was sold and the original owner opened Saffron Grill in Northgate, just west of I-5: http://www.saffrongrillseattle.com/saffrongrill/index.html
I still see Mediterranean on the menu…
An interesting and good place is..
The Aladdin Gyrocery on the Ave, a nice bonus is it’s a few doors down from Big Time Brewing for an after gyro pint.
I had a doner kebab in Munich once, it was great.
Macaroni and cheese is a dangerous, dangerous thing.

No I mean the Annie's from the box.
It’s the only thing I need out of a box and it’s way too addictive.

That's good, too.
We have it a lot since we have small kids.
But I’d take baked mac ‘n’ cheese over it any day.
Smoked Gouda Mac & Cheese

I am incapable of resisting southern food in any iteration.
Which isn’t a problem where greens or okra or whathaveyou are concerned, but other cases can present a severe nutritional dilemma.
I'm a sucker for greasy foods
Last night’s meal = Meatloaf burgers with medium Dubliner cheese.
Tonight’s meal = Velveeta shells and cheese and bloody marys.
Ah, to be young and not fear anything that you put into your stomach…

Growlers and Mac & Cheese
I am a 253 dweller and looking for new places to fill my growler. I have been killing Harmon ESB & various handles at Red Hot as of late, but I am looking for other locales. Also, derived from previous discussion of mac & cheese. Top of Tacoma, a bar on McKinley Hill has epic m&c that gets better as you get more lit.

I think the Harmon in Tacoma fills growlers.
On Pacific Ave near the UW campus.

The Harmon is probably my favorite drinking spot in Tacoma.
Good beer, good food, and right by the water. Also just a few miles from where I used to live, and downhill of where I used to work, so nice and convenient as well. Well, convenient back then anyhow.

Fill your growlers
at the Parkway on I street. They have whats got to be the best and most dynamic beer selection in Pierce County. Also, you’ve gotta try 7 Seas in Gig Harbor. Tiny little taproom, but excellent brews, especially the Balls Deep Double IPA.
