Preseason Gamethread: Seattle Sounders v Chicago Fire

I expect the first half to be a game between mainly first teams for both sides, while the second half is likely to be guys on the bubble. Roster and Salary compliance day is March 1st so for Seattle this is the last game action.

For all of our complaints about the Sounders only doing a Live Blog - FOLLOW HERE - at least they are doing that, today starting at 11AM. The Chicago Fire are only doing updates over twitter. We will get an appearance by #TheTrialist?

Lineups added when they are available

Seattle Runs out the Full First XI

Nkufo
Zakuani Montero Fernandez
Evans
Gonzalez Alonso Riley
Hurtado Parke
Keller

Second Half starters

Nkufo
Zakuani Montero Trialist
Evans
Gonzalez Alonso Riley
Hurtado Parke
Keller

This is your final pre-compliance day preseason gamethread.

Surprising to see Keller out there

I had thought we’d see Ford and Meredith one last time

Fire continue their 3-5-2 experiment

3-3-2-2 style

This from the Sounders page....

Fire Lineup: GK Sean Johnson, RB Jalil Anibaba, CB Josip Mikulic, LB Corey Gibbs, RM Logan Pause, CM Bratislav Ristic, CM Baggio Husidic, CM Marco Pappa, LM Gonzalo Segares, F Patrick Nyarko, F Gaston Purari.

Many of those players would never play those positions but hey, they are reporting more than the Fire at least and we know the Fire lineup.

Interesting

Ristic has only played on the wings and Pause has only played in the center. It would be interesting to see this played out on the field over 90 minutes. Posted positions don’t always dictate real field position. That must be the case here or Carlos is really going experiment wild. Perhaps the 30 minute ‘triads’(?) are giving him some inspiration.

Chicago is another rebuilding team

I tend to forget that Chicago lost some key offensive players in the off-season and will need to do some rebuilding. Too much focus on the expansion teams, the Crew and DCU.

by Dizzo on Feb 26, 2011 11:50 AM PST up reply actions

Interesting

They are playing 3 periods

The teams will be playing 2 45 minute periods and a 30 minute period.

That should give opportunities for every healthy player

But which keepers we see should indicate something

matt noted

why Levesque was sent off during the UCF game when someone asked about that.

“The UCF player came in high on a tackle and Levesque pushed him down in retaliation”

by gstommylee on Feb 26, 2011 11:34 AM PST reply actions

i don't

blame Levesque for shoving down the player after that although as long as he doesn’t do it during the mls season and tournaments.

by gstommylee on Feb 26, 2011 11:39 AM PST up reply actions

Agree wholeheartedly

I understand people’s curiosity, but why undermine our team’s strategic advantage, however small that may be, by trying to get his name out on the interwebs?

Outside of Fucito and Boss this looks really 3rd team/bubble doesn’t it?

yeah but he is third team probably

and they might want to get him playing time..

i read it!! and i agree he most likely made the team! im hoping him making the team bumps noonan out of the team

by Sandra_R on Feb 26, 2011 12:55 PM PST up reply actions

Nothing is certain outside the starting 11-13

I think we know the starting 11 with maybe 1-2 that we know will be on the 2nd team. I think everything is open after that. Recent quotes by Sigi indicate that anyone who slacks can still get the axe before roster compliance.

by Dizzo on Feb 26, 2011 12:57 PM PST up reply actions

Oh, i think the certains go much further than 13

if its only 13 you have Ianni and Friberg added to starters

Which means no Fucito (they protected him) no Jaqua, no Earls, no Tetteh, no Wahl.

by Dave Clark on Feb 26, 2011 1:08 PM PST up reply actions

No Boss. Yeah, I think it’s less of an open field than that. I suspect Sigi makes the comments he makes to keep players from slacking and to keep everyone else guessing.

by Perrinbar on Feb 26, 2011 1:09 PM PST up reply actions

What I'm taking away from Sigi's quotes...

Is that anyone whom feels secure in their position is playing with fire. I’ll give you Tetteh because he has a contract already through G.A. I’m not willing to call anyone else a lock until the final roster comes out unless they have had their contract extended. And that’s a smallish list AFAIK.

by Dizzo on Feb 26, 2011 1:13 PM PST up reply actions

yeah i agree

and for me what im taking from sigi’s quotes is that no one’s spot is safe. if you are a starter and you slack then you are going to get dropped and so on and so forth.

by Sandra_R on Feb 26, 2011 1:16 PM PST up reply actions

I dunno, Noonan did score two goals the other day. I think he probably wants it more, ergo deserves it. It’s about grit and hustle. I think the Trialist might actually be Willie Bloomquist.

by Perrinbar on Feb 26, 2011 1:20 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, but they might give a start in MLS play to someone else

After a somewhat slack off-season last year it seems like they want everyone on the roster to fight for something. Those with contracts are fighting for starting spots. Those without contracts are fighting for spots against younger, hungry players.

For a team that did well the number of players with guaranteed contracts is pretty small. Adrian Hanauer told the media at the end of last season almost no one had a guaranteed contract for the next year. Just Nkufo and Fernandez that I remember. Since then we’ve had:
-Montero signed as a DP
-Keller’s contract extended
-Alonso’s contract extended
-Tetteh (has a contract through G.A.)
-Friberg (I assume he signed a contract when he moved)
-And I’m sure I’m forgetting 1 or 2 others

It has to be quite a bit alarming for some of these starters and role-players whom haven’t had their contracts extended or their options picked up this far into preseason training.

All I’m saying…I’m not taking anyone’s spot for granted…and they probably shouldn’t either…

by Dizzo on Feb 26, 2011 1:32 PM PST up reply actions

There is a difference

between pressure for a roster spot, and pressure for minutes played.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we see an unexpected cut or two, but there have to be 20+ roster spots pretty much locked up at this point.

by agtk on Feb 26, 2011 1:37 PM PST up reply actions

Fair enough

I’m expected at least 1 unexpected cut. There are known unknowns…

Carrasco at the 120th min

Servando Carrasco scores!!! Sounders FC go up 1-0 when Zach Scott sends a long pass to Roger Levesque, who brings it down, then drops it back to Miguel Montano, who crosses to Carrasco in the middle of the box and he blasts it in for the goal.

by gstommylee on Feb 26, 2011 1:44 PM PST up reply actions

Look at that play

RB from well away to TF who drops back to LW who crosses to CDM
