MLS Match Day Live

Did anybody subscribe to Match Day Live last year?  How much did it cost, and was it worth it?  I live in Idaho, so I don't get the games live on television, and I don't have cable so I can't watch the replays on FSN.  I was wondering if Match Day would be worth the investment.  Any insight helps.

Oh, and I tried to find out the cost on mlssoccer.com but they haven't released any info for 2011 yet.

In my opinion it's a great investment

Last year it was $40, and if you have a good enough internet connection/computer, the HD video is in fantastic quality. They do have a blackout area policy though, so check to make sure you’re far away enough from Seattle that you’ll be allowed to watch Sounders games.

My only problem was the black outs

Not sure how much of that would affect you in Idaho, though. It’s a decent, not great, product if you live someplace like Seattle and can get most of the games anyway. But if you’re trying to follow out-of-towners, I could see it being a great product.

Does anyone know about blackouts in areas that get FSN but not KONG?

I’m in the same Idaho boat as Jacob. If they’re available on Match Day, that’d be awfully tempting.

by yuniform on Feb 8, 2011 11:14 PM PST up reply actions

I seem to remember hearing that as long as it's not available live (like the FSN tape delays)

you can watch it on MDL but I’m not 100% sure on that, so I wouldn’t trust that info too much.

Blackouts.

The good thing is that the game is archeived and is then available even inside the blackout region, so you can rewatch the games at your leisure. I wish it would be available in the Archeive a little quicker, as it takes 2 days or so, but still. Usually able to rewatch Saturday’s game during work on Monday’s :)

I've purchased the MLS streaming service the last 4-5 years

There have always been a few problems, but it’s the only way to (legally) watch the games in a given week not on national tv. I think if I only wanted to watch Sounders games it probably wouldn’t be worth it and I would find alternate methods, but I enjoy watching all the MLS games. I can understand how others may not like it as well. The other nice thing is that you can go back and watch the games even if you miss them (not sure how long they are available). The one thing with that is trying to dodge seeing any of the scores as you’re navigating to the game…

I like it and will be purchasing it again. For me it’s definitely worth the $40 cost (especially if you start at the beginning of the season).

Games are available all year long

In fact, I’ve been watching some of the Sounders’ games from last year in preparation for the awesomeness of this season =P

by Tohoya on Feb 24, 2011 5:49 PM PST up reply actions

Worth it IMO

$40 for an 8 mo season is good value (though, who knows – could be more this season). The only time I watched Sounders games on it was when they were on FSC, which I don’t get, but I had to wait until the next day or so usually because of the blackout policy. Mostly, I used it to watch other MLS teams’ games, which it’s great for. I also like the ability to watch games later – In fact, as a subscriber last season, I can still log on and watch all of last seasons’ games (and, I think, the seasons’ before, too), I guess up until the start of this coming season.

The video is usually good, but had intermittent problems for me – some weeks more than others.

All in all, good. I’m intending to get it again this season most likely. I expect I’ll watch the other Cascadia teams a lot.

Thanks for the input

everybody. I think I will definitely be buying it this year. I don’t think I’ll have a problem with blackouts as part of the Spokane media market, we’ve never had blackouts for any other Seattle sport, and they don’t broadcast any games live over here anyways. Seems like $40 would absolutely be worth it. I was expecting it to be quite a bit more, so if its anywhere near that number I’m absolutely subscribing.

I was growing really tired of watching the justin.tv, and atdhe.net feeds.

Plus those feeds are getting cracked down upon by the US Gov

Something about them being illegal

exactly.

I always felt a twinge of guilt while watching them. You know, the whole criminal thing.

Nonsense my good man!

There are plenty of servers in Montenegro and the Federation of Micronesia that are willing to host them.

Not legal to be shown in the USA

Rights violations here. Doesn’t really matter if it is legal where it originates since it breaks US laws.

practically unenforceable

If you ever gave someone a mixed tape (i’m dating myself) or CD, that’s about the level of rights violation we are talking about. Whomever owns the web rights to these games in your part of the world would have a hard time getting the authorities to enforce the rights violation is here. To each his own, but I’m not worried about it.

I think the neuLion service technically isn’t very good and didn’t work as well for me as the old service did in 2009. I think the price jumped from $15 in ‘09 to $40 in ’10, too. I’ll probably purchase it again, because I like to review old games (last year’s games still worked with my $40 login up until a few weeks ago).

by jamesington on Feb 8, 2011 4:15 PM PST up reply actions

They have started enforcing this year

I also find a silly-ness in people who want the league to get better, but who don’t support the league financially.

Great deal

It is much much cheaper then comparable service from MLB and the NBA

I do wish the national televised games wouldn’t get blocked since i don’t have cable. With ESPN3 i can watch all the espn games but fox soccer is one i have trouble with. I understand why it is the way it is though.

My only real issue with the service is that you cannot select which teams feed you are watching, like you can with other leagues. I used to get the MLB radio package so i could listen to M’s games and they let you pick which team’s feed. MLS should do the same. More Arlo and Less Rev’s broadcast team please… I can’t rewatch the Sounders 3-0 demolition of the revs again, because the Rev’s broadcasters are so terrible. Only team i have a problem with, and they always get picked to be the Matchday Live stream for some reason.

FoxSoccerTV.com

It is their version of ESPN 3

I have yet to use it.

I tried to sign up for it but had issues.

The first few reviews of the service i’ve read have been pretty poor. Has anyone else tried it though? I’d love to hear impressions of the service. They seem to show lots of games, which would be useful if the service is of high enough quality.

by DarthGreedo on Feb 9, 2011 2:12 PM PST up reply actions

It was 40 bucks

The quality was great, especially if you can hook up your laptop to your TV (most HDTVs come with computer jacks like VGA ports, and some laptops have DVI ports which you can use to connect to an HDTV using a DVI-to-HDMI cable). It worked pretty well on my occasionally-compromised internet, too.

My only complaint is that more games were blacked out than I was expecting; about a fourth of the games I wanted to see wound up being blacked out. The good news is that espn3 should have many of the blacked out games these days, if you get that service. Even with the blackouts, I think the service was WELL worth the cost, coming from a Sounders fan that’s not in the Seattle area.

by Tohoya on Feb 24, 2011 5:46 PM PST reply actions

I'm in New Mexico, BTW

And still found a few of the Sounders games I wanted to watch blacked out. Pretty sure they weren’t just the Rapids games, too.

by Tohoya on Feb 24, 2011 5:47 PM PST up reply actions

I will also say...

Even if you’re willing to use pirated streams of MLS games, the consistency and quality of the MDL streams is good enough to justify the cost.
