Depth Chart: 3 XIs for Sounders Two Weeks Into Training Camp
The Seattle Sounders are done with two weeks of training camp and we've seen trialists come and go. Nearly all of the Supplemental picks have left as well, and I would expect that only Josh Ford stays the length of camp. Guys like Baptiste, Prieto, Bah and to a lesser extent Neagle have a longer road to run to make the squad particularly with so many returning players. Sean Okoli even made a brief appearance in camp, though he's already returned to Seattle as the Academy is facing Real Salt Lake's AZ squad. I would expect that the revolving door of trialists/invitees will continue that few will stay.
Sigi has tried a few new things, most notable is sliding Tyson Wahl back to the center of the defense and Roger Levesque getting time as a right back. For neither of these players is this a huge change. Prior to coming to Seattle Wahl was a centerback, so this shift is a bit expected, and due to the slight injury to Taylor Graham it may be as much about necessity as it is about increasing his utility. Utility though is almost certain what has inspired the Levesque to right back shift, one that I don't expect to be any indicator of him starting there in non-league matches, but instead a way that he can be a super-sub in the 18 for every single match. In MLS we have seen the Mainer play up top and wide midfield. Back in the USL days he worked at times in the central midfield and spotted time other places as well. Being a barely above minimum player who can play in 7 of the 11 roles in Sigi's system has a ton of value. Whether he winds up being Willie Bloomquist or Mark McLemore will have to be seen.
The charts below should be fairly intuitive, and I expect the most movement over the next month to be at the two widemidfield spots. It is notable that without any Supplement Draftees or trialists the roster is at the limit of 30, but with a move to the injured list the addition of a Lamar Neagle (who would slot into forward, right mid and right back) or Jonathon Prieto (who would slot at the more advanced midfielder, maybe forward or left wing), or Josh Ford as a 4th Keeper also being possible. Whether I drop Pat Noonan from the 3 11s and shift Levesque up to the 3rd Right Wing is relatively immaterial at this point, as I think those shifts are more based on which other players are signed. If a player is on the Injured List proper they will be removed from the 3 XIs. Those carrying injuries that effect practice and possibly game time would be in orange, but left in their "healthy" space.

In the depth by role section I've listed a player who could spot 30 minutes or more in a role in Sigi's system. Those in bold are the ones who are League starting quality, those in standard are non-League (rotationals) starting quality, while italics are for those who are Reservists.
The depth chart will be updated once a month or when major changes warrant. The next one will be in early March as part of our preview of First Kick 2011.

Well done!
As has been alluded to here and elsewhere, there seems to be a general expectation that Noonan and Jaqua may not make it through as they may take up a bigger share of cap space than is justified by their utility.
I like Jaqua. He’s very well suited to the role and the timely breakthroughs happen, often more elegantly than he gets credit for. You could sense how pissed he was to be locked out from the Open Cup final. If the second goal had not been poached by Nyassi perhaps a discussion about cutting Jaqua’s successful run would have come to the fore.
Who would fill Jaqua’s role? Baptiste? Seems to impress but doesn’t appear to be in the Nkufo/Jaqua mold and might not save the team any money, with his experience and transfer fee.
NKufo: such a silence surrounding him. He seems invisible now. No longer positioned as a leader. Already nursing injuries. Is Sigi backing away? Is he revising the “target man” strategy? Starting Fucito with Montero was a bit of a shift. Does O’Brian/Fucito/Baptiste start to sound like a potent new direction up top (2012)?
It certainly won't be Baptiste
if both Nkufo and Jaqua are out.
White and Fucito fight the battle.

Yes to this
Baptiste is to unknown (to us) to be said that he could be a starter. I think in the MLS you need to keep a big guy around just so you have that option of a bruising forward on the field. You have to be able to play a physical game. My best example is the Houston playoff game down where they just beat us up and a Jaqua type player is perfect where he can just knock defenders off him.
gaff
White, that is (not O’Brian).
Two last names. A secondary career as radio announcer awaits.
Evans over Friberg?
Why did you put Evans in over Friberg? Is it a situation where it’s Evan’s spot to lose or is there a consensus that Friberg hasn’t impressed in camp yet?
well because Evans has shown MLS quality skills and Friberg hasn't
He’s a young player coming over from the 20 somethingth ranked league in Europe, and hasn’t yet been paired with Alonso in 1st team action.
But I doubt there’s “concensus” considering how few people have been at practices.
Both are starting quality. I just expect that sigi will want someone who knows his system better than anyone else actually playing.

I surprised to see Wahl that high on the depth charts.
He seems like the one guy that is most likely to lose a spot in the 18.
Which CB would you put higher?

Tetteh
He can play mid or left back. Ianni comes in at CB.
So your bench is
White
Friberg/Evans
Jaqua/Fucito
Tettah
Ianni
Levesque/Scott/Wahl competing for last spot.
Levesque gives you emergency coverage all over the field
Scott gives you RB and CB
Wahl gives you LB and CB
With Tettah able to cover LB, Wahl would be odd man out in terms of spots on the field with no cover in the 18.
Tetteh hasn't been used that much in defense yet this training
So I don’t think he’s that high on the chart yet.

In your scenario
I’d say Wahl would be the clear preference for a pot on the 18 over Levesque/Scott.

Fucito at wide mid...
Why is Fucito so far down the depth chart as a wide mid? I would think we may see him there at least as a late game sub some, putting him at least above Evans. Seeing him down by Noonan seems incorrect to me
I put him lower than Noonan because we've seen a ton more Noonan there
It was purely my gut, as these always are.
Fucito is seeing a lot more time up top, by orders of magnitude. Now, the forwards and wings interchange, so we will see him wide at times.

They don't really play the same position
