I don't agree with his premise that the MLS playoff format is the cause of the poor ratings for MLS Cup
I think it has more to do with the game going well past midnight east coast time on a Sunday night on a cable channel with two not particularly buzzworthy teams that don’t feature any particularly buzzworthy players
It was also tough to watch on TV
Those two teams probably would nto have been in the final with a different (better) format. Also when you see a half empty stadium (which is directly related to the playoff format).
Its a catch-22
You have to have ratings to get on a good network in prime spots.
You need to be on a good network in prime spots to generate ratings.
Grass-roots growth
The way around the catch-22 is to grow the game organically in the cities that have MLS teams. If the MLS has enough of a local following in the major media markets then eventually the ratings and the networks will follow.
