#TheTrialist Has A Name: Mauro Rosales
After a few preseason matches worth of buildup, we now have a name attached to the man who up til now had been known only as #TheTrialist. It turns out its former Argentine international Mauro Rosales, a name you are probably not familiar with unless you follow South American soccer pretty closely.
Familiar name or not, the 30-year-old has a reasonably impressive resume. He was most recently linked with the Mexican Primera's Queretaro FC (although he apparently failed a physical and never made an appearance) and spent the last few seasons with Argentine power River Plate, appearing in 63 matches over four seasons. Prior to that, he spent three seasons with Dutch power Ajax and has even made 10 appearances with the Argentina national team from 2004-05. He also played on the gold-medal winning Argentina Olympic team in 2004. He appears to play primarily right mid, but has not been a scorer at any of his previous stops.
In other roster news, Danny Earls and Richard Martinez are no longer training with the team. That would seem to leave the Sounders with 32 players in camp vying for as many as 30 roster spots.

While he hasn't scored much in any stop there is an oddity in his scoring
He has scored in the following competitions – UEFA Champions League, Copa Libertadores, Eredivise, Argentine Torneo, and Netherlands Cruyff Shield between their Cup and League winners. Variety.

So if he's the Mike Morgan of non-League competitions
we can expect him to ring the bell frequently in CCL and USOC.
You will hear us on Brougham, you will hear us on Occidental, you will hear us on King. We are all around you, there is no escape.
Of those, I'm most interested by the Copa Libertadores
… since it sounds like the tournament most similar to the CONCACAF Champions League. I would think that his experience would be a real plus in that competition.
Does this mean
The Sounders made a discovery claim on him?

Wikipedia is fast
He is already listed as being a trialist with the Sounders.
What a great day!
More speed (hopefully at 30 he still has some legs for more than just 45 to 50 minutes) and watching Man U lose to Chelsea. Ok now I need to get back to work.
Nos audietis in somniis
Nos audietis in altum
I don't understand
So he didn’t pass a physical in Mexico, is 30, and we’re going to do what with him?
PS I hope TheTrialist meme doesn’t die. That was just too much fun.
Good question
I’m assuming he’s still around because the Sounders see something we obviously don’t know. Not unbelievable that he has improved health wise since failing the physical.

Hasn't this been a fairly successful MO for MLS franchises outside of NY and LA?
Take in players of proven quality but who aren’t valued for one reason or another, and then try to get them playing their best. Just with the Sounders: Ljungberg, OBW, now Rosales. Not that all of those are unqualified successes, but if it doesn’t cost much to take a flyer…
agreed

Given the Sounders record in signing players from Central and South America
he’s probably going to be at least an average, if not better, MLS player. Montero, Hurtado, Gonzales and Fernandez seem to indicate that the team gauges the talent and competition in that part of the world pretty well.
You will hear us on Brougham, you will hear us on Occidental, you will hear us on King. We are all around you, there is no escape.
To be fair...
… most of those players have been considered up-and-coming, or at least in Leo’s case an established player still at or near the top of his game. I agree with your general point though.
Strangely I'm comforted by the fact that I have no idea who Rosales is
Means the Sounders have an actual scout to find decent but under the radar players, rather than waiting for the agent of disgruntled players to call. Which seems to be the method many MLS teams use.

With all the competitions, depth is going to play an important part
and he certainly has played in some decent leagues. If he is fully healed, this looks like a good pickup. I wonder what his salary is because I thought they were already against the cap.
So with Earls gone
this means all we got for Peter Vagenas was no more Peter Vagenas, right?

and no more Marshall.
I think we won, because we freed up a lot of cap space doing that, especially with two guys who were never going to play.

oops
I forgot Marshall was an option we didn’t pick up

Sounds like a good enough deal to me.
To be fair, we did also free up some cap/salary space.
La Vecchia Signora Forever!
Too bad for Danny Earls
although it didn’t sound like he had a chance. Interesting pick up with Rosales though. In his picture on his wikipedia page he looks like a total badass.
I'm glad it's not Takayuki Suzuki ...
… which was a name being floated on Twitter. I didn’t see how he would have been worth losing a Seamon or an Estrada.

With Earls out, that means Wahl's spot is more secure?
And no Martinez means Scott sticks?
That's how I'd read it, FWIW

I feel earls could have also been hurt by being taking an international roster spot
especially if they want to sign this guy.
Seattle
always had an international spot open though.
Flexible
Keeping that spot allows them to remain flexible during the season in case they need to aquire someone to replace an injured player, or if they want to make a trade.
That said it may have had more to do with getting under the salary cap to sign #TheTrialist. I’m curious to see what Sigi’s depth chart at fullback looks like.
by snu on Mar 1, 2011 3:48 PM PST up reply actions
it
would look something like
LB: Leo Tetteh wahl Scott
RB: Riley Scott Roger (or roger before Scott)
Earl would been a spot #21+ player so his salary would not have counted.
my mistake
I was thinking he made over the minimum. I must have gotten him confused with the center back who’s rights we aquired in the same trade.
That looks awfully thin at the backs considering that Tetteh has been playing in the midfield during the preseason games and I don’t think Levesque has played a single game at RB.

A River Plate supporter told me this about him on Twitter:
I’m from Argentina and fan of River Plate. Mauro Rosales is one of the worst players i have ever seen here…
He was always injured, and his level was too bad… just 6 or 7 goals in 4 years.
I responded:
Is he worth taking a risk on if he can stay fit? Were injuries the main problem? Plus, he won’t need to score goals for us. We have strikers. Can he provide decent crosses?
To which he replied:
He has been fired from a lot of teams because he is always injured, he isn’t a good option… Don’t wait [on] crosses from him.
Eternal Blue, Forever Green. Sounders 'Til I Die.
More from the River supporter:
His career was good until 2005, since then he was a complete disaster. I think you can look for better options.

I'd rather have Neagle or Prieto
This sounds an awful lot like Noonan. Older player released by his team arriving late to provide depth. No thanks,,,I’d rather take a young guy with upside.
The only stats I could find were from 04/05 to last season
He has an estimated PP90 of .59 with 13 goals as a winger. 23 real assists.
And Seattle isn’t looking at him to replace Alvaro or Montero, but is clearly building to compete this year

This sounds way too hyperbolic for me to consider it remotely reliable
I’m pretty sure River Plate isn’t going to cap you 64 times if you are “a complete disaster.” This sounds like an Argentine fan who had high hopes for Rosales on the national team, and when he didn’t pan out for the Argentine national team (which clearly makes him terrible, amIright?), declared him to be a bum.

Not to pile on
But I was thinking same thing. Obviously, for Rosales to be available it means he’s lost something from the point in his career where he was getting capped for Argentina, but I’m at least inclined to believe he’s at least worthy of the look he’s receiving.

How the 30 works?
If our numbedr is still at 32 and we’re now past the close of business on the west coast, can we assume then two guys are on the injured reserve and sigi’s comments about 28 were probably to fuel extra competition?
30 is only under contract
at this point Neagle, Meredith, Prieto, Ford, TheTrialist and Carrasco are not under contract.

So the question is..
Can they still cut Noonan?
A rather odd glowing front page article on him @ soundersfc.com by ‘stache’ gaschk right now.
yeah i saw that.
im beginning to think we might have to deal with him for another year :(
if they were going to cut him it would make sense to do it today so he can enter the waiver draft tomorrow rather then cutting him later
cheer up
maybe he’ll return to the form of a few years ago….that would be a good thing
im with you
whos to say he doesnt get hurt again??
id rather give a younger player a chance.
hes not going to be better then where he was and its a small chance he will even get back to his fitness and since he has a lot of people ahead of him on the depth chart I would rather get a younger player.
while i agree
with you but i find unlikely that they will especially with 32 players in camp which will be 31 once they decide on who’s the 3rd keeper and the possiblity of jaqua going on the IR.
Only way i can see them getting rid of noonan if they go with 28 players.
whoops
left out would make it 30 after jaqua going on the IR..
but we still need to get down to 20 senior roster players
So its either noonan or the trialist.
id rather the trialist
Seattle
may not have to though. We just need to bump someone to the protected list that’s currently on the senior roster that’s making minimal salary.
