Real Salt Lake v Monterrey in CCL - Gamethread

With all of #MLS4RSL tonight why not throw up a thread for those watching on TV (Foxsoccer) or online (www.concacaf.com). A neutral look at the match can be read at SBN-soccer or of course you can read a Real Salt Lake view of things at RSL Soapbox.

While no MLS team has ever won in Mexico the Seattle Sounders and RSL have something in common. The Sounders and RSL both got very close to a win, but wound up losing. For Jason Kreis' side he can learn a bit from what Seattle did. A road goal would be huge in this two-leg aggregate series, because though no MLS team wins in Mexico, no one wins at Rio Tinto an away goal helps things along quite a bit.

So, as we hope to witness history (kind of as the old Cup version of the tourney that saw two MLS sides win), here's a gamethread for you and our community.

PS Seattle is in the upcoming tourney that will have a trophy awarded in 2012.

Sabario Espindola

Johnson Grabavoy
Wingert Beckerman Russell
Borchers Olave

And I still don't like Suazo, de Nigris or Perez

But maybe that’s just because of those few minutes at the Tec for Seattle.

Should I find it ironic...

…that in a Mexican stadium, there are clearly marked American Football lines?

by JD SoOR on Apr 20, 2011 7:08 PM PDT reply actions

Yes, clearly...

… I just was unaware our version of football was established enough to have a visible footprint in a venue such as this. Fun times :)

by JD SoOR on Apr 20, 2011 7:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Anyone else see the Tottenham vs. Arsenal game

I watched the 2nd half and man was that a fast paced game. I hope we get a little of the same excitement tonight.

Football Lines

They’re not just for the New England Revolution!

by Dizzo on Apr 20, 2011 7:14 PM PDT reply actions

Yeap...

The defending looked a little soft by RSL. A couple players caught flatfooted and no one was marking the guy on the far side.

by Dizzo on Apr 20, 2011 7:26 PM PDT up reply actions

holy tactical subs early

by Dave Clark on Apr 20, 2011 7:27 PM PDT reply actions

RSL should try and pick up the pace

Try to tire out Monterrey a bit so their subs can have a big impact in the 2nd half. They have a great bench to draw on.

by Dizzo on Apr 20, 2011 7:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Really odd subs by Monterrey

Two subs in the first 15 minutes? Including the captain? I really don’t understand.

by Dizzo on Apr 20, 2011 7:28 PM PDT up reply actions

One of the subs won't be able to play the next leg

Due to the yellow card. So, you’d think they’d want him to stay on as long as possible. I’m watching the CCL feed with the crappy announcers. Did the FSC guys say anything about an injury?

by Dizzo on Apr 20, 2011 7:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Was he already carrying a Yellow?

The CONCACAF announcer said he would miss the next leg

However, this is the CONCACAF guy who keeps butchering everyone’s name. So, he might be totally wrong.

Come on Saborio

you have to do better with that one…

Very nice header

I was wondering why Borchers was always so far up. Now I know.

by Dizzo on Apr 20, 2011 7:42 PM PDT up reply actions

I missed the buildup

However, I’ve seen him at least once up in the attacking third in the run of play.

2nd half started....

1-1

(If you are using the CONCACAF stream, use this time stamp to help determine what minute it is.)

On goal kicks they don’t even wait until the ball is out of touch

During run of play that was a bad call

but the replay from the angle that the referee had I totally understand why he made it

Not sure I agree with the handball call

From the angle I saw it looked like it hit his thigh. Even if it did hit his hand you could you claim it was ball to hand. Also, weak yellow card on Beckerman.

by Dizzo on Apr 20, 2011 8:29 PM PDT up reply actions

From Grant Wahl's twitter
Beckerman yellow means he’ll miss 2nd leg next week. Big loss. De Nigris will be out on yellows for Monterrey.

by MMAWrestling on Apr 20, 2011 8:31 PM PDT reply actions

And the 3rd sub for Monterrey enters

20ish minutes left

YELLOW?!?

I have never been more stunned to see a player NOT shown red.

by LordIceman on Apr 20, 2011 8:37 PM PDT reply actions

Definate Red

Hand on neck = red card. Monterrey got lucky there.

by Dizzo on Apr 20, 2011 8:38 PM PDT up reply actions

One of the biggest flops ever

Still hands around neck should be a red

by hindsight on Apr 20, 2011 8:41 PM PDT up reply actions

but what would you want him to do?

stand there with the guys hand on his neck? He can’t react to it or he could get carded for that.

by kelliott1527 on Apr 20, 2011 8:44 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree

Most guy’s first reaction would be to take a swing. If the referee thought it was a dive he should give a card for it. And the red to the Monterrey guy.

by Dizzo on Apr 20, 2011 8:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah

it just seemed extremely dramatic on the replay like he threw himself down with some force

by hindsight on Apr 20, 2011 8:44 PM PDT reply actions

Full Time

2-2 and away goals count as a tiebreaker.

by MMAWrestling on Apr 20, 2011 8:57 PM PDT reply actions

So let me get this straight

If RSL can draw with Monterrey 1-1, then they’d win on away goals?

That’s fantastic. All they have to do is keep Monterrey out of the net in the next match. Loss of Beck will hurt though. Go MLS!

by Orothar on Apr 21, 2011 8:39 AM PDT reply actions

Yes

if its a 2-2 then its extra time/PKs if its 3-3 Monterrey wins the final and moves on.

by gstommylee on Apr 21, 2011 12:25 PM PDT up reply actions

I would be amazed if Monterry can pull out 3 goals

I like RSL’s chances. Rio Tinto is a tough place to get a win.

by Dizzo on Apr 21, 2011 4:45 PM PDT up reply actions

OMG
