Drew Carey, Seattle Sounders Part Owner, Hints At Steve Zakuani Tribute
What started as a grassroots idea for a Steve Zakuani tribute has apparently reached the ears of ownership. Drew Carey, one of the team's minority owners, recently made this comment on twitter:
#11 cards for next #Sounders game in honor of Zakuani and his broken leg have been requested. Will keep you up to date. #forZakuani
What form, exactly, this tribute might take is obviously very much in question. One possibility would be for the Sounders to hand out placards at the gate to every fan. Another might be simply asking fans to print something out at home. Either way, there seems to be significant potential for Sounders fans to make a pretty profound statement at next Saturday's game against Toronto FC.
The tribute would likely be similar to the one Sounders fans made to Charlie Davies after he was injured in a car accident in 2009.

lets hope this goes through.
glad we got the attention of the ownership.
We can make our own 11s as well
My banner which normally hangs at the front of 214 will have a Giant 11 on one side

Maybe instead they could...
make #11-shaped paper weights with sharp edges and give them to the fans before the next home game against Colorado.

Maybe playing CeeLoGreen over the PA when Colorado comes to town in July would be satisfying.

How about a stadium wide "Steve. Zakuani" call repeat?

Nice
We don’t need ownership to back this. We just need to make it happen.
I’m planning to be there next Saturday with my #11 cards in hand (one for me and several extras for the people around me).
Make it happen folks.

I should clarify...
Really happy the ownership (at least Drew) is behind us on this. However, it doesn’t mean that they have to be for us to pull this off.

Any recommendations on what to use for the paper material?
I assume straight printer paper doesn’t hold very well.
that's why it would be nice for ownership to officially endorse this

Would that be at a significant cost to the team?
Or would it only be in the $1000-$5000 range and be chump change?
Just wondering. I fully support the #11 cards idea.

Cost for just my section
I was thinking if we don’t hear about the ownership organizing something for Saturday, I’d be willing to buy 8.5×10 cardstock (not printer paper) for my section with a big “11” on them. There’s like 600 seats in the section so I expect it would cost around $50-$80 at Kinkos. I can pony that up once or twice. I sit in section 107, so it would be on the TV broadcast too.
On the back (or in small print on the bottom if it costs less) I’d put one sentence of instructions for them to be held up for the entire 3rd minute (the minute he was injured in) from 2:00 to 3:00 on the clock (some people think the 3rd minute is when the clock reads 3). No chant required, just the big white cards for a full minute.
I’ll do a fan post on Friday about it unless other plans from the owners materialize. If anyone else is interested in covering their section, we should try to share the same template so it looks uniform.
Even if we do something this weekend, I’m thinking maybe we could do something every home game until Zakuani returns. That may mean until the end of the season unfortunately.
3rd minute or 11th?
That’s probably the decision that needs to be made throughout the Sounders community.
A lot are pushing for 11th
I’ll get in contact with SG leadership and see what they think is best. At the least the SGs, our readers and other websites can print their own and spread them out.

I vote for 3rd
I guess it boils down to what the goals of the message are. If it’s just to remember Steve and wish him well, then the 11th minute makes sense. However, if an additional goal is to send a message to the players, TV viewers, and league that we as fans demand that reckless, physical play be eliminated, I think the 3rd minute makes more senese. The second goal would make more sense as a long term campaign/demonstration where we do this at every home mach (until Steve plays again). We’d be reminding everyone of the minute that the horror happened in Colorado and that we don’t want to see that crap in the game we’re about to watch (or started watching 2 minutes earlier).
Instead of "Seattle....Sounders"
Let’s do the “Steve….Zakuani!”
I like this idea posed by Robert. It should be done!

Table rolls to make giant 11's
A couple section tall 11’s would be pretty cool.
Just stopping by to wish you guys and Zak the best. What a terrible, horrific injury on a stupid challenge. He is such a promising, exciting young player. I really hope he recovers quickly and completely.
Go Sounders.

Not a bad idea...
But the dude’s not dead. Let’s not go too far overboard.
