Steve Zakuani Tribute: No. 11 Placards Being Handed Out By Seattle Sounders

SEATTLE - APRIL 09: Steve Zakuani #11 (L) of the Seattle Sounders FC celebrates with James Riley #7 after scoring a goal against the Chicago Fire at Qwest Field on April 9, 2011 in Seattle, Washington. (Photo by Otto Greule Jr/Getty Images)

The Seattle Sounders will hand out No. 11 placards prior to Saturday's game against Toronto FC and are asking fans to hold them up at the 11:00 mark as a tribute to Steve Zakuani, who had his leg broken by a Brian Mullan tackle during Friday's game. The idea for the tribute seems to have risen organically as Sounders fans started pushing the plan on Twitter, which eventually got the ear of part owner Drew Carey. The tribute will be similar to the way Sounders fans showed their support for Charlie Davies after he was hurt in a car accident.

Sounders fans are also being invited to sign oversized get-well cards prior to Saturday's game. The cards will be located three locations -- Soccer Celebration, the Northwest Marshalling Area and the main entrance to the Pro Shop. Fans interested in making a donation in his name are being asked to send money to his charity, Kingdom Hope.

Zakuani announced via Twitter that he was coming back to Seattle on Tuesday.

You can go to SoundersFC.com to send your well wishes and to download the card ... or you can get it here: Zakuani No. 11 card

I'm excited

This is my first Sounders game of the year, and although I would rather see Zak play, it will be fun to participate in this tribute.

You're going to love it

The stadium should be rocking especially with the tribute to Zak. Also, with TFC coming to town, there’s a good chance we’ll see some Sounders goals. I’m looking forward to it. :-)

Personally

and I know I’m not going to get much support for saying it, but I’d rather they were doing something different, I know it’s well intended but I can’t help but feel that it also detracts from the significance of having done the same thing for Charlie Davies.

Incidentally, has anyone seen any comparison drawn between this and the Axel Witsel incident a couple of years ago? They’re really very similar.

Anyone is free to make their own unique display

This is not preventing that. But getting 36,000 to do something at the same time can be difficult.

I expect something from the SGs Tifo-wise

But as Dave said, when you’re trying to coordinate 36K, best to keep it simple.
