Sounders Reserves Top Earthquakes Reserves on Tetteh Goal
Sounders win! Sounders win! Sure, it was in the Reserve League, but there are standings kept so it counts. Most notable of course will be the Michael Tetteh goal late, at least to those browsing the story, but more important to the future for real League play is who plays, and where.
Would anyone accept a season with a Heritage Cup and Reserve League title?
Robert Jonas reported on twitter that the Sounders midfield controlled the game, as well as the Seattle side controlling possession and having a shot advantage, particularly in shots on goal.
Here's the starting lineup.
| Jaqua | ||||
| Estrada | ||||
| Montano | Neagle | |||
| Seamon | ||||
| Carrasco | Levesque | |||
| Scott | Wahl | Hurtado | ||

There is some question as to how it finished, as there is no report as to who went up top at the end, but here's a best guess until the Sounders report is posted.
| Noonan | ||||
| Estrada | ||||
| Tetteh | Levesque | |||
| Seamon | ||||
| Wahl | Carrasco | Scott | ||

The San Jose Earthquakes release is below the break.
Earthquakes Reserves Fall 1-0 to Sounders FC in San Jose
SAN JOSE, Calif. – Michael Tetteh came off the bench to break a scoreless draw, striking an 87th-minute game winner to give Sounders FC a 1-0 edge over the Earthquakes in Sunday’s Reserve League match at the Nutrilite Training Facility.
Tetteh cut in from the left, took a friendly bounce off an Earthquakes defender while trying to dribble to the right and then unleashed a shot that whizzed through the legs of center back Brad Ring and into the net past a diving Andrew Weber.
Weber made several quality stops for San Jose and finished with seven saves in his second Reserve League start of 2011. Both sides had their chances at goal with a narrow 13-11 shot advantage for Seattle, but it was Weber that was tested more often with Sounders FC placing eight shots on goal to San Jose’s one.
The Earthquakes Reserves return to action on Saturday, April 23 when they host Chivas USA at 4:30 p.m. PT at the Nutrilite Training Facility.

This is an actual league...
so league rules apply, particularly the sub limit? I find it interesting looking at the limited information available to try and see what what on. Seamon/Carrasco pairing is interesting, and I like that Seamon played the full 90. I also find it telling how early Montano came off for Tetteh.
i find it telling too
however when i asked Robert at halftime who had some good chances, he singled out Montano and Jaqua for creating chances in front of goal and carrasco for keeping possesion
I guess this just reiterates that
the only way to know what’s going on in Sigi’s head is to have connections with a certain homunculus.

Do cards count?
I see that our reserves were issued 3 yellows. Do these accumulate as they do in normal league play or are the forgotten as soon as the game ends?
Cards for the two leagues are seperate
as in don’t effect the other.
I assume that cards do effect the next reserve match. It would be kind of funny if a player got 5 Yellows in a 10 games season

That would be
although Leo is well over that rate in MLS.

Remember when we were excited about Tetteh?
To paraphase, “GA first round talent with a second round pick! He could replace Leo! We could move Zakuani to forward!” Now he’s yet to make a MLS 18 and is only worthy of 28 minutes in a Reserve match. This is just an observation about fan expectations, as it’s still very early in Tetteh’s rookie year. It’ll be interesting to see if the goal raises his estimation in the eyes of the Sounders braintrust.

He'll contribute this season,
At least according to Sigi. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him get significant Open Cup minutes.

my thing is he has been playing left mid not left back
i want to see him at left back.
also i think the sounders also want to keep his GA contract and he is limited on how many minutes he can play on that.
Any idea the wording on this?
I’ve heard such things, but as usual w/ MLS, I have no idea how the contract is actually set up.
Also, it is exceptionally common for defenders to need more experience and time to adjust to a new league or team. Probably because the effects of mistakes are greatly multiplied in the back.
A bad shot or run in the opposing box pales in comparison to the effect that a bad tackle or marking job in your own box has. Not a good position to make a guy undergo a trial by fire. (I know there are some notable exceptions..but that is why the exceptions make headlines)
Also good to get players experience where they are likely to contribute, even if it is not their “best” position.

im not sure on the wording
but i know zakuani graduated out of his GA contract his first year because he had to much playing time.
the contracts can last up to 3 years
I don't think there is a hard and fast rule
But it’s definitely tied to playing time. I don’t think the Sounders would purposely be not playing Tetteh just to keep him under that threshold tho. If they thought he could help them win now, I have to think he’d be playing.

Yeah I'd like to see him at LB too
Tangentially you bring up an interesting question: Will the Sounders use Reserve League there to keep guys sharp or to develop younger players? If I had to predict, I think it’ll be the former, given the team’s stated goal of winning in 3 competitions. To bring this back to Tetteh, he probably won’t get much time at left back even in Reserve, since he’s probably the 4th guy on the depth chart there. Whereas he’s a little closer at left mid.
