Seattle Sounders vs Toronto FC - Gamethread

Seattle Sounders FC's Official Card to Support Zakuani

Tonight, the Seattle Sounders try to wash a bad taste. This is not the taste of poor play, but of poor circumstances. Two of their own will be out for months, and so now Seattle faces Toronto FC not just looking for 3 points, but looking for answers as to what the future holds.

Aron Winter has been trying to get a 4-2-1-3/4-2-3-1 to work, but is struggling to find the right personnel. They also had a midweek game and travel troubles, so small things are in Seattle's favor.

For those with last minute printing needs of the #11 - Zakuani No. 11 card

Today's game is on KONG 6/16 and 97.3 FM for radio at 7:00 PM

broadly speaking...

occasional hiccups during a stream which may require reloading (i.e. selecting a different game and them restarting the chosen game). This is not a common occurrence (hasn’t happened yet in van vs. col) but one should be aware of it.

Generally my only real objection is one that is unavoidable by the present broadcast rights of the league- there’s no reasonable means of getting live or same-day games broadcast on galavision or fsc unless you have broadcast television/cable. As a fan of the sport (interested in watching games for teams of which I am not a fan) and a fan of a team I can’t watch (being out of state), yes it’s worth it… particularly compared to other online streaming packages for major sports (MLB I’m scowling in your direction).

by nimajneb on Apr 30, 2011 5:46 PM PDT up reply actions

I have Matchday Live...

The biggest CON for me, is that anything that is nationally broadcast (FSC, or ESPN) can’t be watched until 24 hours after its over.

That being said, I’ve found it to be very enjoyable, especially if you have a really good high-speed internet connection, the picture is quite nice.

by jacobcda on Apr 30, 2011 6:29 PM PDT up reply actions

I feel the same.

I consider it to be worth the price.

by quacker27 on Apr 30, 2011 8:17 PM PDT up reply actions

MDL is great

I don’t even have a problem pirating streams and I buy it every year for the increased quality of the streams. Just bear in mind that nationally televised games will be blocked out, and the Sounders have quite a few of those, especially on FSC.

Will be enjoying the match from 135, sipping on $8.50 domestics :)

“Word is Steve Zakuani remains in the hospital”

and ill be watching the game from section 122!

lineup from Mayers...

Sounders FC starting lineup: GK Kasey Keller, D James Riley, D Jhon Kennedy Hurtado, D Patrick Ianni, D Tyson Wahl, M Osvaldo Alonso, M Brad Evans, M Alvaro Fernandez, M Erik Friberg, F Fredy Montero, F Nate Jaqua

Sounders FC reserves: GK Terry Boss, M Servando Carrasco, M/F Mike Fucito, D Leo Gonzalez, M/F/D Roger Levesque, M/F Lamar Neagle, D Jeff Parke

I don’t like this. There is one thing Tyson Wahl does better than Gonzalez and that’s the long pass over the top into space… and this is the second straight week of Wahl starting at LB with Leo fit. The COL game with the altitude/headaches had a reason, but I have to hope Leo is nursing a minor ailment to approve of this decision.

…setting aside that I honestly like the Parke/Hurtado pairing better than Hurtado/Ianni

Damn the pregame show

For showing Mullan break Zakuani’s leg 4 times in 5 minutes before the first commercial break, complete with audio, wife and I were screaming and cursing, thought we’d seen and heard enough of that.

Jaqua drew both defenders

leaving Fernandez completely unmarked, nearest defender couldn’t recover in time to get on him or the ball.

i just got goosebumps

Life's what happens while you're making other plans

by LGoofus on Apr 30, 2011 7:19 PM PDT reply actions

It's been one sided

and Sigi said there’s nothing wrong with Leo’s defensive game, maybe he knew it was going to be like this and wanted Wahl to be up all game, almost a 3-5-2 out there at times.

Wahl’s taking advantage of it, best I’ve ever seen him.

by Thalas on Apr 30, 2011 7:43 PM PDT up reply actions

and he got a foot in on that breakaway

so instead of it being a shot on target for TFC, it was a corner, Kasey gave him a well done for it.

Is Montero awake yet?

Seems like he just got out of bed.

Everyone's scoring

Jaqua’s turn, maybe Friberg.

by Thalas on Apr 30, 2011 8:17 PM PDT reply actions

Judging from the ignorant gobshite sat a few rows back from me

Montero’s not going to get much plaudits for his game tonight, but he worked really hard and pulled players around much of the time he was on the pitch. And still had probably the best shot on goal, including Evans’s.

by Targaff on Apr 30, 2011 9:42 PM PDT up reply actions

I think Jaqua's coming out

sooner rather than later.. Up by 2 and he’ll be needed Wednesday.

by Kohflot on Apr 30, 2011 8:19 PM PDT reply actions

was a lovely feed for montero.... question

after he made that pass, Fredy stood stock still - didn’t move. Perhaps that’s just experience or belief that Evans will score? Not complaining as the feed was lovely — just don’t know if that’s a normal or typical thing from a player.

Perhaps holding back to position himself for a volley out of the box?

There looked to be a few green shirts ahead of him, other than that not sure.

by BrianL on Apr 30, 2011 8:22 PM PDT up reply actions

makes sense.. was just weird that he didn't look ready to even move...feet parallel

again…not complaining about a lovely feed that led to a nice goal

He often draws back after a pass

as the defenders near him often keep advancing, he likes dropping into space, it’s one of his things.

thanks! :)

"Rebranding" is the technical term.

But yeah, still FSN, just a new name and some format tweaks.

i was

quite amused that Salazar actually called a PK in our favor.

by gstommylee on Apr 30, 2011 9:01 PM PDT up reply actions

It

depends on the ref deciding if it was hand to ball or ball to hand.

Ball to hand (hand being in natural position) isn’t a handball.

by gstommylee on Apr 30, 2011 9:59 PM PDT up reply actions

as was i

especially since i could not see the handball from my seats

by Sandra_R on Apr 30, 2011 9:47 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm not

He was the primary PK option for a brief spell last year before he was hurt. Sigi trusts him a lot so he’ll probably be the guy to take PK if Montero isn’t on the pitch.

by Dizzo on Apr 30, 2011 11:21 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Jeff Parke?

Did Ianni take his starting job? Is he hurt? I haven’t heard news on him.

by scottykimberly on Apr 30, 2011 8:43 PM PDT reply actions

Sigi's been rotating the CB's to keep their legs fresh

With three matches this week, Hurtado will likely not start the next match, making it more important to keep Parke fresh.

i know toronto is a very off form team....

but i am pleased to see the sounders respond well to all the adversity AND to see so many players involved in the game, making positive plays… it feels cohesive tonight….that may be in part due to the opponents weakness but it’s still nice to see.

Agreed

I was extremely impressed by the Sounders tonight and how they were able to perform as well as they did despite having 2 key players out

Great win.

I know Toronto has been poor this year, but that was a very clinically played game. They earned every goal.

i havent found

Brad evans haters to be sensible, so I assume we’ll hear a bunch of, one game doesn’t make a player talk. This will be the third game we’ve heard that from them, but they’ll still continue to say “one game”

by python6114 on Apr 30, 2011 10:37 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

I swear

Evans had the best game i ever seen out of him since he came to Seattle.

by gstommylee on Apr 30, 2011 10:53 PM PDT up reply actions

one hopes...

…that Friberg and Fernandez will likewise receive their due credit?

Parsing out contributions and future offerings among the midfielders will wait for another day, particularly given that all three players involved in the debate will be relied upon. Prior arguments are rendered rather moot by injury, don’t you think?

by nimajneb on Apr 30, 2011 10:57 PM PDT up reply actions

My only dislike of Evans

has always been that he has a tendency to pull his shots well over the goal. Other then that I’ve always thought he was one of the best players at finding the right place to be.
