Seattle Sounders v Chicago Fire - Gamethread

The best expansion team in the history of the league on the pitch, and the best off the pitch. The Chicago Fire and Seattle Sounders will always be linked through that. Well, that and the fact that Portland fans came up in support of Chicago in 2009.

Weather for this Saturday day game seems good for the time of year, and it should be a great time for Seattle to put up goals and declare the early season string of unluck done and gone. With construction and a Mariners game traffic will be heavy. Arrive early, and either leave early or stay for the Seattle double.

Today's game is on KING 5/105for TV, and 97.3 FM for radio at 1PM

Build-up to Match Day: Three Questions | Reference Card | Scouting Report | No Montero, Go Rosales

Opposing Looks (Hot Time in Old Town): Three Questions | Win For Boeing (I no longer like Tweed)

Statistics

Traditional Goals Assists Save % GAA
Fire Chaves (2) Three (1) Johnson (40.0%) Johnson (1.50)
Sounders Three (1) Three (1) Keller (64.3%) Keller (1.25)
Advanced PP90  Shot +/- Team Shot +/-  90 Team ShOG +/- 90
Fire Chaves (2.18) Nyarko (9.78) -2.00 6.50
Sounders Evans (1.12) Zakuani (5.07) 4.75 4.75

Keys to Game

  • Keep Shooting - This will turn around, but only by taking the shots when they are there
  • Strong Secondary Runs - With Seattle continuing to pressure opposing keepers they will need those runners and poachers to put even more on them.
  • Force Uncomfortable Spaces- Chicago has shifted bewtween a 3-5-2, 4-4-2 and 3-4-3 Seattle needs to force players into places where they don't like to be
  • Control the Defensive Triangle - with Fire attacks coming from different angles, Seattle must make wise choices in coverage between Alonso and the two centerbacks.

Stuck at work

Does anyone know of an iPhone app that can stream King 5? I know Justin TV probably does but I was looking for a free app if possible. I will search on my own but just wondered if someone can recommend.

Thanks!

That's interesting

Wonder how much they’ve worked on that in practice, and how long it will last? Hopefully the goals will finally arrive.

Oh MY

What a flick from OBW, and a great cross from Rosales to set it up.

Got exposed on that play. He is sloooowwwwww.

by TheTank123 on Apr 9, 2011 1:19 PM PDT reply actions

…another bad midfield giveaway (Zakuani) and Parke failing to get to the cross. Not many left backs caught facing upfield on that ball are going to outpace Nyarko.

i know we need help up front... but....

i am really concerned about our backline… yes, Tetteh is a talented rookie - but he’s a rookie who isn’t ready yet…. Ianni? Parke? John Kennedy is still getting his feet back under him…. if Keller gets hurt, heaven help us……(knock on wood canceling out any possible jinx – and yes, I’m a dork)

Gorgeous tackle by Alonso there to set up the last of those runs

And some real “gamesmanship” by Chavez to get play stopped.

Aside from the goal against, solid defense. Hurtado looks good. Midfield is on fire, and our offense is crazy awesome. Loving the Evans friberg Rosales setup.

When Montero gets back we can move rosales our wide right. for frieberg. i love eric but rosales is too good not to play.

by Sam in P-Town on Apr 9, 2011 1:57 PM PDT reply actions

Agreed

It’s either Evans or Friberg out, and we all know how much Sigi likes Evans

by SeahawksPhan on Apr 9, 2011 1:58 PM PDT up reply actions

I think evans gives you more than friberg.

Rosales gives you what friberg gives you, except his speed. Zak & white give you that. Evans adds a dimension that no one else brings.

by Sam in P-Town on Apr 9, 2011 2:04 PM PDT up reply actions

And what dimension is that?

I ask that seriously, as I’m not sure I see anything that Evans brigs that Friberg does not do at least as well.

Good first half

Seems like a lot of our defensive struggles the last couple games have come from counter-attacks directly after a bad give away by a midfielder or defender ( i.e.‘s Zakuani’s bad pass that ended up resulting in a goal). Run of play attacks seemed to be better handled, though. Really like how direct the offense has been, very good goal opp.’s

by Menthu Ra on Apr 9, 2011 2:01 PM PDT reply actions

correct...

… unless evans & alonso give up the ball before starting the counter.

by Sam in P-Town on Apr 9, 2011 2:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Also wondering

if Rosales runs himself ragged for 75 again, will Sigi will sub him out earlier….

by Menthu Ra on Apr 9, 2011 2:09 PM PDT up reply actions

unless I'm mistaken...

the sounders have conceded 6 goals on the season, and at least 4 of those are largely derived from giveaways in our own half. Zakuani, Evans, Alonso, Friberg… if I recall correctly anyhow.

by nimajneb on Apr 9, 2011 2:10 PM PDT up reply actions

id like to see sigi sub

rosales for Flaco & stick zakuani up top with white & flaco wide for zakuani

Rosales (I think) was there...

… but he was charging in to finish the cross before Johnson tipped it.

I know.

Annoying. I never minded it as a player. Grass is still my favorite, but the difference between the two was never such that it merited much discussion. Just wear nubs.

by zeeehjee on Apr 9, 2011 2:21 PM PDT up reply actions

People do like to whine about it

Nevermind that we have seen matches on bad pitches that affected play too. Those are never brought up.

by Coug1990 on Apr 9, 2011 2:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Never played soccer on it, but it did play a lot of football on it

Always preferred being on FieldTurf. Having a surface be guaranteed to be flat and even and consistent was a godsend. Regular fields cause more havoc because of their divots and potholes and patches where the grass grew unevenly.

I don't know.

While I tend to like speed over size, Jaqua seems to have a knack for putting in sloppy goals. If Zak can get behind the defense a bit we might see Jaqua connect.

by zeeehjee on Apr 9, 2011 2:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Why does every close call go against the Sounders?

Evans was clearly fouled, a lot worse than the foul on Gonzalez

by Coug1990 on Apr 9, 2011 2:29 PM PDT reply actions

Who knows.

Maybe we have a reputation for diving. We did have Ljungberg on our team and he had that rep, whether it was justified or not.

by zeeehjee on Apr 9, 2011 2:34 PM PDT up reply actions

If he gives Chaves credit for another dive...

… I will gladly accept the red card and three-plus match ban for a Sounder to cold cock Chaves for being such a ponce.

The second has kind of bogged down. Chicago has had the better shots on goal and if not for Keller, the Sounders would be down

by SeahawksPhan on Apr 9, 2011 3:03 PM PDT reply actions

He is not much of a defensive player and with the Sounders in the lead

They subbed in more defensive players (probably the first time Jaqua and defensive are in the same sentence)

True

but Fernandez must not be very happy right now as a benched DP

But, it is hard to complain when the team wins. Besides, he is only a DP because of the transfer fee, not his salary.

From what I can tell

It wasn’t really a 4-3-3, just what Sigi wrote on the lineup

It definitely didn't look like a 4-3-3

Evans was definitely playing more central than wide.Looked more like our standard lineup with Mauro playing a much more active version of the withdrawn striker than Montero’s version. Excited to see a fully match fit Rosales on the wing with a healthy Montero up top.
