Seattle Sounders at Real Salt Lake - Gamethread
Real Salt Lake is a dominating home side, not losing in their last 29 MLS games there. They've ridden the ability to win at Rio Tinto Stadium to solid runs in MLS play and a great performance in the CONCACAF Champions League. This season they have snagged 17 points in only 7 played lead by a strong defense that has only given up 2 goals on the season. With key losses due to both injury and Gold Cup call-ups Jason Kreis will have to count on Nick Rimando, Jamison Olave and Nat Borchers even more than usual.
The Seattle Sounders are clearly a middle of the road team right now with their 17 points in 13 played. While the defense has been solid the long stretch of injuries (finally over?) has hurt the offense even more than expected. Sigi Schmid's side does generally well on the road, but will continue to try new things to unlock the door to a promised land of about 1.5 goals per game.
The game is on KONG 6/16/106 and KIRO 97.3 FM at 6PM

Fredy Montero dropped to the bench tonight against Real Salt Lake. Not a huge surprise after Wednesday’s comments from coach Sigi Schmid.

I agree. I like it

Would have preferred Montero to Friburg in CAM, but overall this looks strong.
Didn’t Fredy’s tear last year start after he was a sub for a game or two? Maybe that’s just what he needs – not the most mature player ever

inner competitiveness takes over any rational medical analsysis…
If Flaco had begged off...
…I’m sure Sigi would have been questioning his desire and intentional fortitude. (If he’d bothered to learn Spanish, he’d probably say Flaco lacked cojones.) So, when he tries to continue and can’t, he’s not to be trusted?
None of them should really be trusted that much
Sigi was saying that he would only give a veteran the benefit of the doubt, and now Flaco’s input on fitness matters will be given less weight. It’s not really that crazy.

Seattle Just Doesnt Look Good
Haven’t looked dangerous in way too long. Since before Zak went down. They looked much better later in last year, and I’m really bummed they haven’t looked like the Sounders of the last two seasons yet this year (other than Toronto game). They need help mid-season badly.
Right, but there's not guarantee that we repeat last year's run, this season.
Unofficial Sounder Fan Club President - South Dakota Division
Depends
on how the summer transfer window goes before we see if there will be a similar end result like last year.
I dont know...
…one DP wont turn this team around.
and
Seattle wouldn’t necessarily just bring in 1 player.
Where?
We need help up front, and in the midfield. Im not sure one DP can solve that in MLS where physicality can shut a player down.
I think a Blaise NKufo type player really helps us out.
just my uneducated two cents.
Unofficial Sounder Fan Club President - South Dakota Division
N'kufo
helped clean up the midfield with his ball handling skill as well as opened montero up.
Bring in someone good at free kicks
Can’t use physicality to stop a free kick, and more danger on set pieces means the defense can’t be quite as physical in general.
It wouldn’t hurt if we had another player with a good hard shot from outside the box. That could help create some space, too, if defenders have to step up to be mindful of long shots.
IF
seattle does bring in another DP can the player stay with us for at least for longer than 1/2 a season and a 1 1/2 season. That would be extremely helpful if we can bring someone in that ends up staying with us for at least 2 seasons.
The right one *could*
It’s no guarantee that any player can turn things around, even the “exact right guy”.

The right
player would help in those games where we dominated the run of play but couldn’t score.
Or perhaps...
switching to the electric yellow kits…these “bra” type unis are at fault for the crappy weather and crappy play….
Not
what i was hoping that Flaco had to come off.

RSL doesn’t have anything going on either. I think we’ve looked better than them, to be honest. They’re connecting here and there.

Assuming it was a foul
It has to be red. No doubt that a forward with the ball at the top of the box with no one between him and the keeper is an obvious goal scoring opportunity. Therefore, it was a foul that denied an obvious goal scoring opportunity.

And just wonder what the hell was going on.
Unofficial Sounder Fan Club President - South Dakota Division
I'm sick of the laziness too, it has to stop!
Unofficial Sounder Fan Club President - South Dakota Division
It's not laziness.
There’s no lazy players. They’re all highly tuned pros.
I’d call it more like indecisiveness. We don’t start thinking about what to do with the ball until we’ve had it for a second or two. And randomness, where we just bang the ball away as hard as possible without any aim. But that’s the entire league, not just us.
I don't know about "lazy"...
…but we certainly didn’t dominate a team missing some of their top talent and then playing a man down.
Instead, we got a lucky “rebound goal” from a set piece and another from a one-in-a-million long-distance shot…and almost blew a 2-0 lead in the last ten minutes.
Oh, well, I guess the saying is true: “It’s smarter to be lucky than it’s lucky to be smart.”
how?
Corner was well taken.
Neagle’s shot was outstanding.
Red card was thoroughly earned, setting up the play.
Arguably a draw would have been legit BUT…
win is “deserved.”

So if they're reserve players we're supposed to excuse their lack of ability?
They’re our starters now, they should be rated as such, no?
Unofficial Sounder Fan Club President - South Dakota Division
Well the crowd is suggesting its their lack of ability that I'm seeing.
Not that they’re lazy and soft.
Unofficial Sounder Fan Club President - South Dakota Division
you want to rate people differently...
If they’re on due to injury rather than international duty?
The depth of both teams was considerably tested but there’s no chance that such circumstances excessively favored Seattle.
Right, but saying RSL is one of the best teams in the league right now isn't a great argument, that best team wasn't out there tonight.
Unofficial Sounder Fan Club President - South Dakota Division
Their reserve players would be starters on many teams in the MLS
by wyte_lightning on May 28, 2011 8:18 PM PDT up reply actions
This is probably true. But they only had 10 guys at the end.
And the last ten minutes I felt like we got beat silly.
Unofficial Sounder Fan Club President - South Dakota Division
not particularly...
last ten minutes i saw a couple nervous set piece opportunities and one man with a bad defensive lapse on top of a rather well organized defensive effort and an offense which would have made things much more scary for RSL if not for the effort to kill off the game.
I must have imagined the ineffective passing.
Unofficial Sounder Fan Club President - South Dakota Division
I must have imagined the
decent buildup between Neagle and Montero, and the 3 on 3 / 4 on 3 setups which happened (at least in my mind’s eye) several times. You press those and you come up with chances equally as strong as RSL’s. If Jaqua had had any legs by the end it would have helped.
Regardless:
If you’re suggesting that the run of play invited a -2 or -3 goal differential in the last 10 minutes, I think you’d be letting time-wasting tactics get to you too much.
I'd argue...
They’re still well into the upper half
and playing at home
in one of the most difficult settings possible…
I don’t think their injury status significantly diminishes the accomplishment, really. If anything we have a bit of praise to give Ianni for the poached goal and a bit of scolding for a lousy lapse. The defense was otherwise fairly strong. The best chances came off lucky bounces (which should still be closed off better).
Agreed...
RSL may be “one of the best teams in the league,” but not with the starting XI they had tonight.
This wasn't a sterling performance
But a few defensive miscues were saved by stellar goalkeeping, and either of the goals or the red card can be attributed to luck. We put in a great performance and took three points from one of the most difficult place to play in MLS. Yeah, we were fortunate to meet them when they were on a slide and missing a lot of players, but hey, three points! Positivity!
