Seattle Sounders at Columbus Crew - Gamethread
Seattle Sounders Coach Sigi Schmid returns to the land where he last won the MLS Cup and the Supporters Shield, a land that he likes. The Sounders have done quite well against the Columbus Crew, not yet losing and even winning one of their two Lamar Hunt US Open Cups against the Yellows. While Robert Warzycha's team has significantly changed personnel, and wasn't expected to be a challenger this season, they have followed a Sigi profile building from the back winning through defense and one or two impressive offensive players. Tactically they are what Seattle has been when healthy.
Seattle continues to adjust to the losses of Steve Zakuani and O'Brian White and are on the back-end of a double week with minor injuries and fitness issues effecting the lineup and formation that has been used. A big-small pairing up top may be difficult, and the midfield could be anything from a diamond, the CDM/CM, or even a bucket. However Sigi and staff choose it will be a grouping that is inexperienced together trying to claw their way to a goal or two.
The Sounders will wear their new Shale alternate kit for the first time this afternoon.
Today's game is on KONG 6/16/106 and KIRO 97.3FM at 4:30 PM

3rd Sounders game blocked on MDL in 8 days...
Last year I’m not sure there was more than 1 away game for the Sounders that wasn’t blacked out. MDL is only good for replays.
That being said… anyone have a working stream?

im surprised at montero over fucito
Aww, I wanted to see Fucito start
Oh well. I’m assuming he’ll be the first sub on.
If our "target forward"
doesn’t play particularly big and has too poor a first touch to really perform hold up play, then why exactly can’t our target forward be the diminutive harvard grad?
Evans has quad strain

Is it bad to hope we play for a 0-0 tie
and with the only other goal in mind of getting as many people healthy for Portland next week?
I still think we can win this.
Montero…Fernandez…Friberg. We have some offensive fire power. Columbus is decent, but they are not elite. We still have a chance to win this
Yeah, I want to be optimistic
It just feels like the hits keep coming. How long can we roll with the punches?

Perhaps his thought is that Fucito will sub for Montero.
Personally, I’d prefer we put all our offensive weapons on the field early, look for a quick goal, then work in defensive subs later to preserve the W.

is our defensive personnel that different this year?
not regarding the penalty….just our defensive back line seems to have spurts of really poor play…. if the personnel hasn’t changed much than is our defensive play worse or the same as last year? if worse, why?
we seem to be having problems this second half …. no life…sloppy….playing like the weather…. wet and sluggish
Life's what happens while you're making other plans
well
if Rogers was a sounder he would have gotten a yellow. Given how this stupid ref is calling the game.

That doesn’t contain OMGREF nonsense.
im willing to give a ref credit when credit is due
but this referee sucks
i was gonna
give him a benefit of a doubt for being new to this league but nope. he should go down to a lower division and figure out how to properly call a game before calling division 1 game.
Honestly, I don't know that he has been that bad.
Of course, I disagree with the pk, but he doesn’t seem to have lost complete control.
Maybe I just feel we’ve had much worse refs in other games.

Sorry, but
This ref has done nothing to deserve the crap he’s getting here. The reality is that we’ve been disjointed at the best of times and were extremely lucky to be ahead to start with. He certainly hasn’t been unduly biased against us; in fact we’re lucky to still have everyone on the field given Alonso’s two-footed jump onto Rogers’ leg.

I am concerned that Riley and Gonzalez might have issues with every winger on every team in the league

Them being on the pitch makes me nervous on a good day
Them against good wingers fucking terrifies me.

Yeah not too impressed with Levesque right now
aside from the defensive play earlier in the game when Alvaro ran into Keller…
Fucito for Fredy
I’d mind that sub a lot less if it didn’t mean Roger was still on the pitch.

Fucito is not a very good defensive player

the hell he isn't
stupid comment. he marked beckham successfully for 30 mins, intercepted a Marathon clear for a goal, runs down defenders continually causing them to make hurried passes.
ignorant thing to say.
Yes, I am ignorant.
That is the problem.

Sigi, you have 1 sub left and less than 10 minutes.
Why not use it?

So put in a defender for Levesque and get fresher legs on the field.
Or put a defender in instead of Fucito. Makes no sense.
by magistermilitum on May 7, 2011 6:20 PM PDT up reply actions
Only rationale I can come up with:
Sigi wants to keep as many good defenders on the field as long as possible then make a final push for the 3 pts at the end of the game.

yes he is
he can play lW or RW very well. another misguided comment. congratulations.
he used to be a rb

neagle in for fernandez
wtf??
and happy birthday neagle!
yeah taking out levesque is better
unless fernandez is tired.
He's not an MLS caliber soccer player
That’s the reason for disliking
Talked to him after the last game - I like the guy,
but it’s hard to conceive him as a starter, or someone who would go the full 90, even with injuries.

I'd be fine with him if he wasn't a poor MLS player.

I dont think any one particularly dislikes him…
He plays hard and hustles his ass off, but he’s not impressive compared to others on the team, at least individually.
That’s not to say that he doesn’t contribute to the team, but he sticks out a bit if you put it into individual efforts, I suppose.
This is based on my observations as a fan only. I may be very wrong.
I'm kind of confused about the ref pointing at the arm.
If it came off the arm, shouldn’t it have gone to the spot, not the corner?
Yeah. That was disappointing.
Bad work by our attacking third in the second half. Too many give aways.
Would have liked to see more from Neagle. Sigi made some strange moves.

This
is not how the team should be playing going into portland game. If seattle plays this this next week. We will lose to portland.
Columbus is way, way better than Portland

half
a squad beat RSL and Union. If Seattle could do better on their passing Portland shouldn’t be a problem. But i been questioning Seattle quality passing lately.
half a squad?
What are you talking about?

Oh
you were refering to seattle with half a squad. Sorry i misread ya.
I have no idea what you're talking about
But if you’re failing to grasp the extenuating circumstances that went into this game, I can’t help you.
Sorry
i been frustrated with the team the past 2 games. I was hoping for at least a win going into the Portland game.
I know, I just wouldn't worry about this one game.
Now if players don’t get healthy, then yes … worry. But with a week off after three games in eight days, I’m a little more calm. A draw was a good result here, frustrating as it may be.
I have zero problems
with the results. Its quality of the playing i have problems. Seattle shouldn’t be having issues making simple short passes and keep from turning the ball over even with the poor rain conditions..
I don’t mean players battling over the ball i mean balls that either go out for goal kick or throw in and go directly to the other team. Seattle has been doing that in the past 2 games.
I know we seen how the team can be when they get the passing down. Why is it seem to be difficult to have back to back games with the same quality passing?
No kidding
I think we can count ourselves lucky to get anything out of this at all.
Looked like that went off Jaqua's ribs.
Can’t feel good from point blank range

Attack just stopped as soon as Jaqua came on the field
That was as big a display of lead footed play as I can ever remember.
I'd wager that had more to do with Columbus taking control of the midfield than Jaqua

Can the Sounders start having ads very similar to the Mariners? I’d love ’em.
I love the Arlo ad drop for Dairy Queen
