Seattle Sounders Salaries Released: Fredy Montero Gets Big Raise; Kasey Keller Takes $50K Cut
Fredy Montero will make almost $500,000 more in 2011 than he did in 2010, Kasey Keller will make about $50,000 less and Mauro Rosales is making the league minimum, at least according to salary data released on Saturday by the MLS Players Union. Among the other players to receive sizable raises over what they reportedly made last year were Osvaldo Alonso (more than doubled his salary to $140,000) and Nate Jaqua (received a roughly $50,000 bump and now makes $211,000). Leo Gonzalez also received a raise of about $40,000, bringing him to $110,000.
The Sounders have 12 players making more than $100,000. On the flip side, they also have 11 players making less than $50,000 in base pay.
League-wide, the highest paid non-Designated Player appears to be David Ferreira, who somehow is making $705,000 is guaranteed compensation despite not being a DP. Fabian Castillo, ironically Ferreira's FC Dallas teammate, is reportedly making $42,000 even though he is a DP.
It should be noted that Generation Adidas players(Michael Tetteh) don't count towards the cap, but that transfer fees do. So in cases like Castillo or Alvaro Fernandez they are DPs for different reasons than David Beckham or Thierry Henry. Also, per last week, theSounders have room for a DP and maybe a just below average salary player.

I'm
surprised at how much we got Rosales for.
More like grand larceny.
Rosales needs a better rep.

Thank You Dario Sala
Dunno if Rosales has his own agent, but it looks like Sala was one on the side.
So, in January 2011, I officially retired from playing soccer and began a career as an agent. The move has been an easy one, as I had been informally recruiting players to come to the league for years. Now I just get paid for it. I’ve already signed several players to teams here and in Latin America, including Mauro Rosales of the Seattle Sounders.
How much would you pay for a player
greater than 6 feet tall who can get 9 & 9 when healthy and be the Open Cup MVP?

I totally agree with you Dave.
Jaqua may not be flashy, and he has been hurt but when he is on the field the team is much more in control of the game and absolutely more capable of scoring goals. I have never understood the Jaqua hate.

Oh I'd pay that much for a player who can get 9 and 9.
I just don’t think Nate Jaqua is that player anymore.
Really?
Then how do you feel about what Montero makes???
Why?
He took a pay cut of more than $27,000 this year.

Ok, ok, ok.
Maybe I was a bit rash. There are a couple ways you can look at Jaqua’s salary, and perhaps the way I looked at it was the wrong way. Here is the thing for me. Jaqua isn’t useless and I’m happy to have him as opposed to not having him. But, there are quite a few Sounders I would rather have making $200,000 than Jaqua. Hurtado, Alonso, Evans, Rosales, Zakuani, and even O’Brien White jump out as being more deserving in my eyes.
Of course, there is a lot more to player salaries than that. But that is what I was thinking when I said it.
Actually...
I’m smoking crack. Jaqua got a raise of almost $50k. I’m not sure where I got that other info from… Sorry.

is he a player that is supposed to get a raise every year?
like is it part of his contract?? or did our FO offer him a raise??
Well, no off-season deal was announced
So I’d say it’s part of the contract he apparently signed after his huge 2009 year.

96k?
Going into the season Noonan was behind Montero, N’kufo, White, Jacqua, Fucito, Lesvesque and Neagle on the depth chart all the while making twice the wages of #thetrialist. If you are going to dap up the FO for finding Rosales you have also ask WTF!?? about Noonan’s salary cap hit and continued presence on the roster.

With Noonan it must be remembered that his contract is only through June
While it is listed at the annual rate.

Also worth remembering
This is the same deal he signed when he first came to the Sounders.

It's also probably close to league minimum
The league minimum for senior players rises with the number of years in the league if I remember correctly. That’s probably close to the minimum the Sounders can pay Noonan since he has plenty of years in the league.
Well, no, I don't think it is
The minimum is probably closer to 60k for someone like him, but it’s a bit beside the point. The Noonan that we signed and the Noonan we have now are not exactly equally capable of demanding a salary.

I disagree that Noonan has been able to command a salary from the Sounders at any point
He didn’t have a lot of negotiating leverage when he first got here. He was waved by Colorado and there certainly didn’t seem like teams were clamoring for his services. I doubt he had a lot of value in foreign leagues since he already washed out of Norwegian club Aalesunds F.K. back in 2008. Noonan probably had even less negotiating leverage when they decided to continue his contract for half a season.
He’s here because Sigi knows him and likes him from when they were together at the Columbus Crew. Not because he was in demand around the league and could command a premium salary. I like Sigi as a coach, but he should leave player acquisitions to Adrian Hanauer and Chris Henderson.
I should also say
You know the CBA much better than I do. So, you’re closer to the mark on what the minimum salary for a senior player like Noonan is. However, if they’re not paying him the minimum then they’re over-paying him. I figured he took a cut this year when they extended his contract to mid-season, but I guess I was totally wrong on that.
They probably are over-paying him...
But he didn’t sign an extension. the sounders just picked up his option. There wasn’t really any renegotiating going on.

That makes more sense
I imagine they would have had to sign him for the full year if they wanted to re-negotiate. It makes more sense for them to preserve their flexibility for the summer window rather than trying to lower his cap hit for the first half of the season.
Because it was only 3 months and he was still recovering
And it hasn’t hampered what the Sounders were trying to do. It was also the “decent” thing to do since he was hurt while playing with them.

possibility add better player
Is it possible for the Sounders to get better players than LA galaxy (Beckham) or NY Bulls ( Henry) again since we have the most supporter in MLS anyways.
