Seattle Sounders Reserves v LA Galaxy Reserves - Gamethread

Today's Reserve game (11AM at Starfire) in the Seattle rain will feature the strongest MLS Reserve squad at the half way point of their season. The Sounders are 5-0-0 with a +7 goal differential and face the Los Angeles Galaxy Reserve side that is winless in three played with a -7 goal differential. Ezra Hendrickson's work with Reserves has had 4 players earn their way not just into the 18, but into the starting XI for the senior team. Two others have used strong Reserve play to pop into the 18 just this past match. Pat Noonan is discovering new roles (CAM, Captain) on the team, and Miguel Montano continues to mature out on the left wing and at forward.

Into this highly competitive internal environment Seattle drops two trialists. Cillian Sheridan (#M551) should get a longer look today as he hasn't just flown halfway around the world. Myron Samuel could get long time as well. It is unlikely that the Academy players will get a run as they played two in California over the weekend. This gamethread will also have the tools form for those that see Sheridan and Samuel to offer quick input of the skills they see.

Okoli and Brockaway

Were not with the Academy team this weekend due to graduation. Academy has a rule that you can’t play three days in a row so that probably explains the addition of Brockaway and subtraction of Kovar and Yedlin.

One of the great advantages of these games

Is that you can hear the players talking to each other.

Like when a Galaxy defender screams at his forward “That was a good pass!” after the forward flubs it.

A few thoughts...

I was standing on the west end of the sideline for most of the first half and Steve Zakuani walked right by me without a crutch and without even a slight limp. It was nice to see.

From my perspective, Jaqua and Estrada both had pretty active first halves on the offensive end. Couldn’t see much of the defensive end of the field. Friberg didn’t seem like he was into the flow but that may have been a more of a result of my perspecitive and not anything he did or didn’t do.

The wind was really whipping down there on the field and it was affecting the ball flight a bit.

Back at the office now…

Does Samuel look that much better than the Academy players who have gotten time in these games? He would technically be eligible for U18 as he was born in 1992.

Those in the know:

Based on what you’ve seen, if you could take Cillian or Ochoa, who would you take right now?

by agtk on Jun 13, 2011 2:00 PM PDT reply actions

Not in the know, but

I’d take Cillian. Haven’t seen enough of Ochoa, and his goal was rather sloppy & opportunistic. Not a knock on Ochoa – I’ve seen more of Cillian, and his size & physical play would be a great asset to our attack. I think we’re small up front and our guys get pushed around too much. Sheridan seems like a more-talented Jaqua, but better at using his height and size to get on the end of things.

Ochoa isn’t a slouch at 6’, but I guess he didn’t really have enough opportunity to really make a case, either. He came in too late to really make a good call there, IMO.

by ABTsportsline on Jun 13, 2011 2:04 PM PDT up reply actions

I'd take Cillian based on the 2 reserve games

I don’t think Sheridan will take the Sounders over the top, but he can really contribute for the long term. I think we need another big, young target forward especially as we head into a lot of games for Open Cup and CCL.

by Dizzo on Jun 13, 2011 3:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Don't know how I feel about this match just yet

On one hand I would have liked to see more of these trialists, but on the other I understand the need to “jump start” Jaqua. Still, I think Cillian didn’t really have enough touches this match to make much of a case for himself…. and this is more me lamenting that he did not than anything else. His size is definitely awesome – clearly the tallest guy out there, and he does have wheels! I’d bet he’s faster than Jaqua in a sprint as I saw him chase down LA wing players and actually catch them. He is definitely solid in the air, and we need size up front.

by ABTsportsline on Jun 13, 2011 2:01 PM PDT reply actions

Sounds like Boss had the game of his career...

And anyone with a transfer cost evaluation on Sheridan? If he’s cheap, we should really consider signing him…

La Vecchia Signora Forever!

by AKSupporter on Jun 13, 2011 2:16 PM PDT reply actions

Sheridan

would probably be a loan, not a transfer IIRC. I think he’s under a four-year contract with CSKA Sophia. This could work to our advantage, however, by making him less expensive and thus leaving room for other signings…
