Seattle Sounders at Toronto FC - Gamethread

Joao Plata provides some excitement for Toronto fans.

Aaron Winter has struggled to get Toronto FC to play the style of game that he wants. He has changed what they are tactically to a 4-2-1-3 with Alan Gordon at the Target. Whereas the season started with DeRo being the expected offensive guide the Reds now get their dynamic play from Maicon Santos and Joao Plata. The emergence of Plata has given the Eastern Canadian faithful some hope, and as a quick, creative on ball force he should challenge James Riley at times.

The Seattle Sounders will take a traditional diamond into BMO field which could pull the wingers of Winter back into defense. Sigi Schmid needs to see his forwards not play well, but dominate. Forward scoring isn't essential, as long as they continue to create opportunities and the team gets offensive support from the attacking midfielders. Whichever forward pairing starts (we expect Mike Fucito and Fredy Montero) the leash could be short. Considering that Toronto has four losses by two or more goals this could be a game that provides spark to the Rave Green, in their Shales.

The game is on KONG 6/16/106 and KIRO 97.3 FM at 4:00 PM

Seems pretty East to me. Of course anything east of Vancouver counts as “eastern” to me.

is it east of vancouver?

There are only 2 teams right now.

It’s not like I referenced the Maritimes

Forgive us

Sorry, we’re still getting used to the fact that there is more to Canada than Vancouver and the mushroom people of Newfoundland.

Canadians say Toronto is in Eastern Canada

and geographically it is. Even if it weren’t, the point attempted to be made seems a little petty.

Parke v Gordon

I expect Parke to do his magic trick that everyone likes so much where their target forward just disappears.

by Derek Young on Jun 18, 2011 2:55 PM PDT reply actions

I've always thought of that as being more Hurtado's trick.

Parke was always the guy outleaping everyone for every header all the time forever.

Certainly not a first rounder, but he was taken in the last handful of picks in the draft if I recall.

And his height didn’t stop him from outplaying much larger players in the combine. Definitely a player I’m keeping an eye on.

Yeah

Two soft yellows, but both merited.

by Targaff on Jun 18, 2011 5:41 PM PDT up reply actions

That's your prerogative

But the reality is that he stumbled and knew he was beaten, and deliberately grabbed the player’s thigh on the way down. It’s soft, but it’s a professional foul.

by Targaff on Jun 18, 2011 5:45 PM PDT up reply actions

A proffesional foul...

is not an automatic yellow….especially when you have a yellow. My point is a GOOD ref would know the difference.

by lima9 on Jun 18, 2011 5:47 PM PDT up reply actions

I didn't say it was an automatic yellow

What I said was that it was a professional foul, which you don’t seem to be disagreeing with, and if you commit one you’re essentially throwing yourself on the ref’s mercy. When you do it in a position where you’re preventing the player from advancing towards the box in a final third, you’re just asking for trouble.

by Targaff on Jun 18, 2011 5:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Both yellows were deserved,

if they were calls against Toronto I’m sure most people would agree with the red.

that’s a game changer…The foul was just a regular foul. A good ref keeps that card in his pocket for a foul like that.

It's not an argument he can win, really, is it

Either he takes shots and misses, or he doesn’t and is knocked for not trying instead that instead.

every game I complain about him shooting to frequently

and often high.

Fair enough

I can guarantee you’re in the minority as far as most Sounders fans are concerned, though – all I ever hear at Qwest, about the Sounders in general, not specifically Alonso, is “stop messing about and shoot.”

I know

But it goes to illiustrate my original point was that it’s an argument he can’t win. Personally I don’t mind if he has a go once in a while as long as it’s not all we’re doing.

It's fair to criticise him for shots like that one

But I think on the whole Ozzie’s shots are good ones. Most of the time they come off of cleared set pieces where there are a zillion guys in the box and the best chance is to hope for a wonderstrike or deflection from long range. It worked last week, and most of his long shots are of this type.

Today he was particularly bad at taking long shots when he had better options, though. Really felt like it crimped the counterattacking we were trying to do after we went a man down. It’s probably because so much of our offense was going through him, I guess because of all the counterattacks and because of the tactical weirdness 10 men produces.

I'm so used to us getting those 'non-goal side netting shots'

that look like goals, I didn’t think it went in initially.

We move ahead of Colorado

Into 6th overall. Right behind NJRB. Toronto falls to next-last, ahead of only Vancouver. Oh Canada!
