CONCACAF Gold Cup: USA v Mexico - Gamethread for readers

Surprising starter Freddy Adu looks to continue his strong play in the second half v Panama.

There are going to be a ton of places you could go to enjoy your online experience of this match-up between the United States and Mexico, but this is our community and our place to enjoy watching the two best teams in the region face for a trophy and ticket to Brazil. The game is on Univision (KUNS in Seattle), Fox Soccer and KJR-AM radio (950 AM) is carrying the Fox Soccer audio.

Bob Bradley has clearly read my post on why Adu should start, as he will be. The Americans look to be playing in a 4-2-3-1 with the attacking four being Alejandro Bedoya, Freddy Adu and Landon Donovan in support of Clint Dempsey. The full lineup consists of the usual suspects, outside of that huge insertion of Adu.

Mexico is the more talented side with Chicarito (Javier Hernandez) starting as the lone forward in their own 4-2-3-1. New York Red Bulls' Rafael Marquez will be at centerback as is now the norm. It is a stacked, and unsurprising force.

The USA will be the underdog in this long and heated rivalry. But in a one off Final all that matters is this single game and the goals that are scored. About 70,000 of the 90,000 at the Rose Bowl will be rooting for El Tri, as is typical, but this could be the day when an American side can proudly say "Nos Audietis"

question

any possibly that Bradley could be fired as coach if this end up being similar to 0-5 nil loss to mexico in the gold cup final?

because of the Confederations Cup

The US sent a batch of nobodies, ok, it had Adu, Altidore and Davies, but for the most part was very youth heavy.

I know friends who had bad feelings about Spain two years ago

We were given no chance of winning that match, but I still knew it was possible. I think, with the current lineup, we have a great chance. And like Dave, I am always hopeful. I am sick of people writing off Bradley before the games are even played. There are things to dislike about him, but has been a much better coach than he is given credit for.

USA plays well in underdog role

It seems to me the US NT plays well when there is no pressure or expectations. I have a good feeling about this game. I struggle to understand why Rose Bowl was selected for the final. The final should be played in some place where the US team would have an advantage of home support.

by seattle 13 on Jun 25, 2011 6:01 PM PDT reply actions

How would that benefit CONCACAF?

Because this is their tourney, not the USA’s.

Too bad Jerry Jones is an idiot and he didn’t make New Cowboy’s stadium wider.

Thus far I think Mexico has far outplayed the US. It’s just one of those cases where US has had 2 chances and taken both, and Mexico has had about 5 and taken 1. Really doubt either team will run away with it.

Even if not

he was offside when the ball was first played, and pulled the defender out of position. There is a case that he was part of the play before our defender touched it back to Howard.

by agtk on Jun 25, 2011 6:45 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't see how he pulls Lichaj off.

Lichaj plays the ball, loses his balance and then doesn’t he even make an effort on the rebound

Chicharito = smart

Way to avoid the ball knowing he was offside.

by mistuhp on Jun 25, 2011 6:43 PM PDT reply actions

In fairness, the first two US goals went against the run of play. That is on the US.

But 14 was offside on the original pass on the Mexican’s second goal. Way offside, which drew a defender away. The card on Donovan was crap, and the fouls are not being called the same both ways.

by renstar on Jun 25, 2011 6:47 PM PDT up reply actions

No.

He was clearly onside on the pass. Lichaj played the ball, sort of fell, and after that Chicharito was offside, but inactive. If we had the same goal wiped off for offside, people would be whining like crazy.

or do

what Saunders did throw a elbow and get sent off.

by gstommylee on Jun 25, 2011 7:20 PM PDT up reply actions

IMO Saunders didn't deserve that Red, a yellow sure, but the red was excessive.

especially considering that Lenhart had to headbutt him to hit the ball out from under his arm.

by Rougtan on Jun 25, 2011 7:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes he did deserve that red

if your going to throw an elbow at some one, you are putting yourself risk to being sent off.

Lenhart was indeed carded for headbutting the ball. But Saunders on the other hand should have done absolutely nothing but yet threw an elbow at Lenhart.

by gstommylee on Jun 25, 2011 7:29 PM PDT up reply actions

thats why I prefaced it with IMO.

I considered his elbow to be more of a motion to seal off the ball from Lenhart than a deliberate, violent elbow. Hence it would of been a yellow for reckless challenge and not a red for violent conduct.

by Rougtan on Jun 25, 2011 7:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Could

the ref given Saunders a yellow sure. But letter of law says other wise. While it was only to seal the ball from Lenhart he still threw the elbow at the player’s head and that is a red card.

i seen elbows to the head where the player hand to get bandaged up but the red didn’t do squat about it.

by gstommylee on Jun 25, 2011 7:50 PM PDT up reply actions

if you think the elbow was purposefully aimed at Lenhart's head, then it's violent conduct and a straight red.

If you think it’s wasn’t intentionally aimed as his head, then it’s a reckless challenge and a yellow. Either way it’s entirely up to the ref. If thats Cillian Sheridan instead of Lenhart, it hits him in the shoulder and Saunders only gets a yellow. Letter of the law leaves it up to the ref to make the call if it was violent or simply reckless.

by Rougtan on Jun 25, 2011 8:09 PM PDT up reply actions

I think part of the problem is he's not a winger.

He is a pure CAM. He can play winger, and his skills make it tempting for coaches to put him at wing, but he’s so much better when he can pick a side.

I don't expect them to win the world cup

I expect them to be better than paint-dryingly boring, and be much more tactically sound. When the coach has to make first half subs in the world cup, that’s bad. When we sneak by teams that have pretty much nobody playing in a decent league, while we have guys in the Premier League, Bundesliga, France, etc., something is wrong.

He's looked great as an attacking mid/wing player

I don’t know that I’d expect goals out of him which is what a lot were expecting of him years back, but he’s very talented with the ball at his feet, he made some great runs, his 2 man play with Cherundolo early was brilliant, yeah.

Why not pull a defender?

Not like any of them are doing anything anyways

Looks like it

playing not to get embarrassed. Always 6 behind the ball. At least on my crappy stream.

Cherundolo loss might have been

where we lost the game.

Yeah, he's not the captain of a Bundesliga squad for no reason

His defense as well as his skill in the attack and how well he looked to mesh with Adu early, Jones’ bad tackle hurt him.

No might about it. We have no good options on the bench and Bornstein just completely crapped the bed. Oh well. If that doesn’t happen, who knows what we see.

Boo! Tomorrow AM. I want all things now!

It sucks after being 2:0 up,

Almost any other day, two goals scored would be enough for the win in this competition. Defense, who is usually the most reliable part of the US NT, looked really bad today. I am not blaming Howard for any goals, but he did not stop anything today. Even with all that bad defending, there were chances for the US to get back in the game when Mexico was up 3:2 and 4:2. Hopefully, the US NT will learn from this defeat and mistakes. Also, credit to Mexico because they are really good team. They just have better ball handling skills, and they were more physical today, which was surprising.

Credit Mexico

for switching their tactics early. It seemed to me that they realized early on that the US could, and would, hold possession and move the ball patiently upfield. Mexico also realized that the speed and skill of Barrera, Dos Santos, and Hernandez were too much for the US back line to deal with, especially with Cherundolo injured. Thus, the bunker and counter, which was exploited with ruthless efficiency.
