Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

A personal reflection of a twelve month journey with a thank you.

2010 will go down as a year of extreme highs and lows for me which made quite a few impressions on my life, but also taught me a few hard learned lessons. I started 2010 by beginning a new job that paid a very nice salary, but forced me to move away from my fiancé, and away from city life (Sioux Falls has about 150K people, I was working in a town called Lake Preston, which had less than 500). This adjustment was not impossible, but left me with a whole lot of free time on my hands.

It was just one year ago that I was riding the high of the excitement of what the 2010 World Cup became to me. I was six months into my new lifestyle which I hated, I was two months away from being married, and it became clear that my future was not in Lake Preston. To cope with my misery, the World Cup filled a void that had been left by missing my family and friends and by a very disappointing 2010 Mariners campaign.

However the World Cup came to an abrupt end, the Mariners traded away Cliff Lee which left me to only watching Felix days, and I quit my job leaving me jobless through the month of July. I was still very interested in soccer, and wanted to immerse myself in it. To my surprise, this was not easy to do. I knew that Major League Soccer existed, but I had no idea in what capacity. I learned that Clint Dempsey played for Fulham, but they were now in the off-season. I turned on the TV and searched the internet, and there was very little soccer to tune into.

I then focused my energy into learning the sport through a game called Football Manager 2010. It’s a fun fictional simulation game where you can manage a team in almost any league in the world to whatever direction you hope to take it. The game was not easy to pick up, because I had no idea what formations meant, that transfers between leagues existed, and that there was such things as regulation. A few hundred hours of playing the game later I had a slim grasp of the basics of the game.

August comes and I have a new job, moving to Vermillion, SD and had just gotten married. I still followed the Mariners on a loose basis and started to notice on the SBNetwork that MLS sides were churning out blogs. I started to follow a couple of them, and became incredibly bummed that the MLS did not have a team in Minneapolis. Being a Mariners fan, the Sounders seemed like a reasonable choice, but I wanted to cheer on a "local" team so that I would have a chance to see them.

The reason that today I am a Sounders fan is because of Sounder at Heart. I started to follow the team while they were struggling, someone named Freddie Lululuhfgerbgerg was leaving town, and the team seemed quite in flux. However I knew I wanted to follow along with friends, and the Kansas City, Dallas, Denver blogs just didn’t seem quite as friendly/appealing, and I was learning from Dave, Jeremiah, and crew.

Luckily as soon as I started following, the Sounders started to win, I got smarter and figured out how to watch them and other MLS matches, and I started becoming familiar with the rules, culture, and nuances of the game. I even started playing again in a recreation league. Since following the Sounders my quality of life has been quite high, granted it has very little to do with the Sounders (great job, great wife, great home, great health, great dog) but the Sounders and soccer really picked me up in a time when I needed something to do. I now have great enjoyment while watching the Sounders. Every goal we score is as exciting as the last, and every goal against is as crushing as it can get. From 1500 miles away I feel extremely close to the team, and for that, this is my thank you to those here in the S@H community.

You guys are extremely special to me as you all have been inviting to me and my silly South Dakotan ways. You have all taught me a few good things, gave me new perspectives to investigate, and have been especially kind when I asked newbie like questions. Jeremiah is at the top of the list for me as he entertains me from time to time on instant messenger and twitter. The amount of information you guys create and present, and the community you provide and manage, it is just wonderful.

The growing passion and fandom instilled by simple things as this blog, watching the games, has made a positive mark on my life. This August my wife and I will be traveling to Seattle for the first time. We will be catching a Sounders game, a Mariners game, and seeing the city in person all for the very first time. I really look forward to meeting 30K+ Sounders fans all in one spot and being a part of a crowd that ESPN cannot silence.

A short year ago, this trip would have never occurred. Before a year ago, if I had a reason to go to Seattle it would have been to see the Mariners. And while the Mariners are still very near and dear to my heart, the Sounders mean something more personal to me. In 10 months I feel like I have more invested in the Sounders than I have in almost 15 years of following the Mariners. Life is crazy like that sometimes.

So again, thank you everyone, and I really look forward to meeting you guys. The Sounders game we’ll be going to is against Chivas, which probably isn’t the most exciting of the bunch, but it will mean a lot to me for a long-long time. Maybe there’s a chance we can meet up before/after the game for a beer and for some good chatting. I highly doubt that many of you will be visiting Southeastern South Dakota anytime soon, so this is as good as chance as any!

I know exactly how you feel

I live about six hours from Seattle in Missoula, MT. I was born in Tacoma though, and the culture shock of moving to a small town in Montana was life changing. I always kept up with my Seattle teams since the 90’s, I felt like they kept me connected with my old life back on the sound. I was slow to jump onto the Sounders bandwagon though. I kept telling my friends that they were just filling the void left by the Sonics’ departure, and soon people would get bored and they would move away or collapse too. Between the first and second seasons though, I started watching Premiership soccer, and got so hooked on the beautiful game. I couldn’t wait for the Sounders’ season to start so I could support a team that I felt I had a personal connection with.

Now I’m a bona fide addict. I can’t go a day without checking for news about my Sounders. I own jerseys, scarves, and sweaters. I try to go to a few matches a year and yell till I can’t talk. Welcome to the best fan club in the world, enjoy your stay.

Thanks!

I haven’t decked myself in gear quite yet, I have a S@H and a Sounders FC scarves, but I don’t have jerseys yet. They aren’t available in Sioux Falls and I have a hard time investing $100 into something I cannot try on first. :P

I have some friends who just moved to Missoula MT, small world. From what I hear though, I don’t know if I’d call that small town haha. Here in South Dakota (and I’m sure all over Montana) a small town equals 3 streets, a gas station, a bar, and some goofy tourist attraction surrounded by farmland.

soundersfc.com

The official pro shop has jerseys from last year on sale. If you don’t mind getting something from last year there are good deals on there, including an official long sleeve away jersey customized however you want for 78.00, or a replica home or away for 40.00. If you want this year’s gear check out dicksportinggoods.com their current stuff is some of the cheapest I’ve seen online.

Seriously, JWAY, if they still have those, those are the way to go.

I got three authentics and a replica right when they went on clearance – two long sleeve, two short sleeve – for less than $200 combined. The old ones don’t have the backpack/bra straps.

by mistuhp on Jun 29, 2011 9:30 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, the price isn't the issue. I need to know how they fit. I'm 5'6, 155

So I’m pretty well built, and basically I’m in the size where I prefer size small, but sometimes slimmer fitting clothes I prefer medium. Since its a shirt I want to wear a lot, I’d like to feel good in it. :D

Fucito wears a tight medium and is that height

He weighs slightly more, but his is 100% muscle.

Well, if it's any help...

I’m about 5’11, 160-ish, and typically I wear mediums, and medium t-shirts fit pretty well for me (not tight but definitely not loose); the jerseys fit about the same. I’m pretty sure with what you just said you’d end up with a medium…. the old jerseys don’t have techfit, but the authentics have a band that fits pretty snug around the waist.

And again, even not factoring in price considerations, if you’re going to be wearing it a lot around South Dakota, you’ll get enough questions as to why you’re wearing an oddly-colored shiny xbox shirt that you might not want to have to take too much crap about the straps. But I just have an anti-strap bias (I didn’t actually plan on buying an authentic jersey until the strap ones came out and I realized I would never want one).

by mistuhp on Jun 29, 2011 12:00 PM PDT up reply actions

I am also 5'6, 155ish

Bought a small authentic green jersey in ‘09, and it fits well. I’ve worn it for almost every Sounders game since. It is snug, and kinda long. If you want a looser fit then medium should work well, though I have never tried it on.

Are you from Seattle originally?

Just curious…..choosing the Mariners if you are from the Dakotas seems random is all.

by B-Lot tailgater on Jun 29, 2011 9:04 AM PDT reply actions

No I grew up in a small town of Harrisburg, SD which is now a suburb of Sioux Falls

I started following the Mariners because the first baseball video game I played was Ken Griffey jr presents MLB for the Super Nintendo. I grew up without cable, so this was pretty much my portal to baseball as a young buck. Obviously I became a huge fan of Griffey and just stuck with it after he left because I liked other players (A-Rod, Edgar), and 2001 was a special year that sealed the deal.

The Twins or Royals are more logical choices. However my only influence were ones that I found. My parents were not sports fans, and all my friends were Vikings fans ( I didn’t like the purple jerseys and the Cowboys were good back in those days (Cowboys fan!)).

I think its kind of random, but a set of circumstance. If Kirby Puckett, Frank Thomas, or Barry Larkin is on the cover of that game, I may be cheering for someone else.

Yeah it was pretty awesome as a 9 year old.

(nerd alert) Now I play Out of the Park 12, and play in my own fictional universes.

The best feature about that game was that it didn't have the players association license.

So you had to manually go in and rename all the players. It made me get stats books out of the library.

I'm also one who is following from far away

although I’ve lived in Seattle area for most of my life. I am currently living in Birmingham, Alabama. It’s crazy to know there are Sounders Supporters all over the US.

I love this community of fans a lot. I, myself, am more of a lurker than a regular commenter, but I’m glad the comunity here and the Sounders could get you through some tough times. Glad you can join this great fan base!

I’m not sure if you are on Facebook or not, but there is a group on Facebook that is called Sounders Supporters East (SSE) (might not be exactly right but it’s something like that) and they try to arrange travel between fans on the eastern side of the US. So I don’t know if that is something you could be interested in joining (if you haven’t already). Nothing required they just organize meet ups (for games and other stuff sometimes) in MLS cities Columbus, NY, Philly, DC, etc.

Here’s to many more years of Sounders support and a Full Trophy Case!!

This team already has a nice expat auxiliary.

I’m from Boise and went to the RSL game this year, as part of the ECS horde. One of the best moments (besides the wonderful win) was someone from out of town talking garbage about Utah. Someone immediately chimed in, “Hey, I live here.” Seattle’s a great place, but a lot of other parts of the country aren’t too shabby.

by yuniform on Jun 29, 2011 10:02 AM PDT up reply actions

Thanks! I believe I'm in the Midwest Horde or something like that.

I want to go to KC for the match in early August, but since I’m going to Seattle the next week, its tougher to maneuver, and the allure of seeing my first Sounders match in Seattle is kind of winning.

Heh yea

I would prefer to be able to see games in Seattle (fortunately I got to see one right before I moved), but seeing one somewhere nearer to this side of the country is better than not seeing the Sounders at all, and I would try to do that at some point except I don’t have the money to do it…

by majora999 on Jun 29, 2011 11:19 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, but...

if you go to that KC game, then go to the Seattle one, you show up in Seattle as one of only maybe a couple hundred who’ve been in the new stadium, and you can drop things like, “Well, when I was at the KC game last week…,” to the amazement of the people around you.

In all seriousness, if you can pull off the KC game, do! Meet some of the ECS people at the game and it’ll probably end up enhancing your Qwestlink Field experience more than you’d think. At a minimum, you’ll know more words to the songs than most first timers.

by mistuhp on Jun 29, 2011 12:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Well that was pretty convincing.

As a Sounder fan in Wyoming, this strikes a chord.

I lived in Seattle for 3 years up until last August, enjoyed taking in a fair share of matches at Qwest and followed the Sounders fairly closely, but I wouldn’t have considered myself a diehard supporter. But as they say “you don’t know what you got ‘til it’s gone.”

Now in WY, I’m more of a fan than ever, probably for many reasons. The Sounders are a great club, and I’m trying to hold on to the best of my Seattle experiences, along with the culture – great coffee, great music (KEXP online!), etc.

But among the reasons is finding this blog. The writers and the community are awsome – they make following the Sounders that much more fun – big thanks to all of you. I visit S@H multiple times a day. I mostly lurk, but I think I’ll become more involved.

I follow matches wherever I can, and look forward to any chance to see the Sounders live. Couldn’t make Denver, but saw the boys end RSL’s streak at Rio Tinto. I’ll be in the Seattle area during Chivas weekend, but I’ll be attending a wedding instead of visiting CenturyLink (have we figured out what we’re calling it?)

Have fun JWAY – savor the experience.
