Ireland's Cillian Sheridan On Trial With Seattle Sounders
UPDATE: Just received confirmation from the Seattle Sounders that Cillian Sheridan is, indeed, one of the players on trial with the team and he could appear in tonight's Reserve League match against the Vancouver Whitecaps. In case you needed another reason to head out to Starfire, that probably qualifies.
They are called "rumors" for a reason, but the latest name on the transfer market being linked to the Seattle Sounders is Irish forward Cillian Sheridan. The "rumor" was apparently brought to English language media by Paul Buttner, an Irish reporter who tweeted this:
Reports in Sofia suggesting that CSKA's Ireland striker Cillian Sheridan on way to MLS side Seattle Sounders on loan...
MLS-Rumors then picked it up and claimed that there's even a chance that Sheridan is already in town. I have called around a little bit and haven't found out anything that would either lend credence to or quash the rumor. There is a reserve match tonight and I suppose it's possible Sheridan could be one of the rumored trialists who are supposedly suiting up.
Assuming there is some truth to this, it would make some sense. Sheridan is young (22), big (6-foot-5) and has a pretty decent scoring touch (.34 goals per 90 minutes in Europa League and the top division Bulgarian league this year). If it's really more of a loan deal, it's doubtful he'd count as a Designated Player, which could still allow for another bigger-name signing.

Is a loaner
required to wait for the transfer window or is this someone that could start immediately?
Good question, also when is the transfer window?
Unofficial Sounder Fan Club President - South Dakota Division
I think a loan would still require an ITC, which means he'd have to wait
It’s more of a FIFA regulation than a MLS one.

International Transfer Certificate
Summer transfer window opens on July 15, which is a Friday so the earliest you’ll likely see a player who requires an ITC appear is the week of July 18

I am assuming that he will be brought in for the target forward spot,
considering he is 6’ 5" and that where the team’s need is.
yes, i think that's a safe bet

Kill-i-an, like Celtic (the Irish, not Boston variety)
Hot damn.
I picked a good night to go to my first Reserve game.

Great stuff in there.
Are they really named the “Crew” because they are in construction over in Ohio?
I dunno what the story is behind their name
Their logo has miners in it though from what it looks like.

It was chosen from a naming contest
per wiki: "The club badge – unique amongst MLS teams in that it features people – contains three silhouetted males wearing construction hats beneath a stylized “Crew” wordmark. The logo is intended to represent a crew of hard working people, much like the hard working, blue collar image the city of Columbus cultivates."
eh. I guess I see where that classification comes from.
I thought some were pretty interesting
Learned about the usage of Dynamo, what CSKA meant, Deportivo, etc

Another trialist is here as well... Myron Samuel
Matt’s blog on both Samual and Sheridan.
Samuel is 18 and a mid/forward. He has 9 international caps and scored 19 goals in 16 games for his club (in a high scoring league)
So the fact that they are naming them..
… does that mean they already used a discovery claim on these two?
That would be my guess

with the health of our forwards
I seriously doubt we’d move Jaqua anytime soon, as much as some would like to dream.
Not to kill your high
But Jaqua is here as long as no one is willing to take his salary. Noonan on the other hand…

Soo the verdict is
A tall kid who can’t get regular playing time anywhere?
Well, he made 23 appearances last year

Can't get regular playing time for Celtic or CSKA Sofia
which isn’t the same thing as getting playing time in MLS
Nos Audietis
Coefficient
Bulgaria’s league coefficient ranks them 21st in UEFA for what it’s worth. Though Sofia is consistently their top team.
Ooops
Nevermind, looks like they trade back and forth with the other Sophia side with Levski getting the better of them. Appears to be like an SPL type situation.
I'm not trying to be negative, really, since I've never seen him play
But we would be his 5th side in 3 years. Is that kind of turnover regular for young players of his caliber?
Kinda common
That isn’t unusual for players in other leagues. If the senior side likes them but can’t find them minutes, they’ll send them out on loan to get first team time so they can continue developing rather than languishing on the bench.
If he were older, I’d say its more cause for concern, but not at his age.
I don't know that it's automatically concerning
Lots of reasons for transfers when the kid is essentially on loan every where. Not like teams are booting him.

Gotcha boss
I’m excited to see them both tonight then
Is it just me
Or does he look like a more coordinated version of Jaqua. Obviously hard to tell from highlight reels, but they seem similar but without the baby deer running on ice quality that Nate often has.
I thought he ran like a baby giraffe?

Can a loaned player be signed U-23 roster spots?
I’m sure he makes much more than the 32.5K that those spots allow? But would it be possible to create a deal where he doesn’t go against the cap?
He might
Montano is on loan and off the books.

but Montano also makes 32.5 k
They might be able to keep him off the books by signing him to the 32.5k contract and giving him a bonus
That would be more than $32.5k
Most bonuses count toward cap
