Seattle Sounders Reserves v Vancouver Whitecaps Reserves - Gamethread
This baby Cascadia match is destined to be over shadowed by the two trailists (Cillian Sheridan and Myron Samuel - links to brief scouting reports), but is also a key Reserve match between the Seattle Sounders and Vancouver Whitecaps. Seattle has dominated Reserve play displaying their depth by winning all 4 previous matches with a goal differential of five. The match starts at 7PM at Starfire (there is a roof over most seats) and is free with suggested donations. Parking is 5$.
Strong Reserve performances by Mike Fucito and Lamar Neagle earned them both first team time, which should show the rest of these guys that out-playing the Whitecaps will give them a shot at first team time. Sigi also will need to start evaluating the roster for the US Open Cup as the Third Round match is on June 28th.
The Vancouver Whitecaps should have some of their old USL guys playing tonight as Wes Knight and Jay Nolly did not play in their last MLS match.
Lineups will be posted as soon as they are available, below the break you will see our crowd sourced scouting form.

This is very, very cool
I wish I was there to participate.
Sounders lineup
Sounders FC reserves: GK Boss, D Levesque, D Scott, D Gonzalez, D Tetteh, M Carrasco, M Seamon, M Noonan, M Montano, F Estrada, F Sheridan
bench
Seattle bench: Ford, Yedlin, Kovar, Samuel, Okoli, Gallagher.
For those of you who haven't seen Gallagher play
he’s really good. Calm on the ball and very technically skilled.
I don't know a whole lot more
but he’s a CB on the U16s. I’ve seen him play 3 or 4 times and was impressed each time. Good vision, good touch, sound both technically and tactically. He’s one of those guys that you watch play and never looks rushed or flustered.
I just didn't know him as I pay more attention to 18s

ok just wanted to make sure i wasnt missing anything
im curious to hear how they do against salgado.. since in the cascadia summit he made our CBs (at least graham) look very bad!
A little
He played some back in CR. I think Sigi’s words from the time were that he could play center “in a pinch.”
Are there rules concerning playing time
ie can a guy go 90 in a full team game and turn around and go 90 in a reserve game?
No rule (last version of Reserves did)
With a Tuesday/Satuday you may actually see it.

but with zakuani and obw on ir, that’s two more spots. So, there are officially three open spots right now and team can open up one or two more with cuts.

Noonan is a competent passer and definitely a good communicator. I don’t know that I’d trust his through passes enough for a center attacking role at this point or his defensive ability enough for anything else in the middle If asked to play there for the big boys.

Interesting
Sigu/Reserve coach must think that playing the two outside backs as CB’s makes it easier to go to 3 in the back.
Tetteh has drifted centrally on the attack...
… a number of times which bunches things up on the attack and forces Carrasco to the outside. Otherwise he’s been great.
He’s strong for his size too. Almost ran straight through a Cap defender.

-Sheridan has looked good especially in the first 30. His workrate tailed off a bit late in the half. Maybe Janiki is getting to him?
- Tetteh looks great. Quick getting forward in the attack and back for defense.
- Montano clearly has the skills to be really good. Makes some dumb mistakes though like a bad packpass that almost lead to a scoring opportunity.
- Noonan’s looked good as have Seamon.
- Carrasco is solid as ever.

Here's what I saw from the trialists:
Sheridan had some good hold-up play with his feet but was a little early jumping while trying to win headers for some reason. I imagine he’s usually better in the air. He pressured well on defense and had some good one-touch passes. He created a couple dangerous situations and was on the end of one for a good goal.
Samuel had great runs as a striker, but his passing was inaccurate much of the time. He’s quick for sure, though. He had a couple runs in behind the defense that looked like he had to be offside but wasn’t.
I’m amateur at best seeing this stuff, so take it with a grain of salt.
by Greg Pirkl Lives on Jun 7, 2011 9:38 PM PDT reply actions
Yeah, I'd agree with much of this
Sheridan was up for a scrap to start at least, and obviously got the opener, although I think most of the credit for that should go to the cross (Montano, I think). He had some nice touches but did fade a bit as the half approached.
Samuel’s best asset was that his runs were nearly impeccably timed – he was offside twice that I saw, once coming back and then once right at the end from just going a smidgen too soon (yes, person near the entrance who threw up his arms in despair as I walked past, he was clearly offside). And while his passing was mediocre, I think my main concern would be that he didn’t really seem to battle for balls in the air, like he figured he was beaten before it even came to him.
Scott and Gonzo at centre half was entertaining to watch. Positionally they were at ones and twos, and Leo in particular got sold on a pass back from Tetteh in the first half that gave the Caps probably their best opening, not that that’s saying much given how toothless they were before the break. When position wasn’t an issue they didn’t half clear it well, though – I’m not sure I’ve seen anyone head the ball back to the opposition keeper from just outside his own box before…
It was really nice to see Zakuani walking around.

Post-game impressions
Funny that Dizzo and I had basically opposite impressions of Seamon. I thought he single-handedly killed a huge number of offensive chances with bad passes. Estrada had the same work rate but was much better handling the ball and essentially took over the job of playmaking from the middle even though he was on the wing.
I was too late to see the best part of the Sheridan show (thanks SUV driver who stalled in the middle of the 520 bridge).
I thought Scott was the player of the match. He totally controlled Tan and Salgado on the backline. He won every header he was involved in and cut out a bunch of passes. Leo also looked good at center back. You can imagine that could be a future for him, since his biggest issues at fullback are his pace at getting back and his distribution, neither of which are as big a deal at centerback. Carrasco also pretty much shut down the center of the pitch as a defensive mid.
Boss was shaky. Being a keeper means being mistake-free, and he definitely wasn’t that. He did have a tremendous diving punch-save on a header in the second half, though.
Montano and Tetteh both looked good.
Academy kids didn’t have long in the game, but Kovar busted his ass to get back from an attack to help cut off a counter. Always like to see that.
Nos Audietis
Forgot Noonan
nice game from him. A lot of good headers and good distribution from the midfield. I know he’s already got a soured reputation, but if I told you we had some new player named Nat Poonan who played like he did, you’d be excited at the prospect.

It’s not as easy as “We’re recording it anyway, let’s put up a stream.” Even if you don’t have commentators and shit like that, you need to do all the tech work to make it happen. Obviously it’s not impossible, but I’m hardly shocked that they aren’t streaming reserve league games.

Portland had it for their U-23s
It can’t be that big of a production if it’s easy enough to do for a U23 game.
A u23 match that also decided a spot in U.S. Open Cup...
It’s not that it’s impossible, clearly it isn’t, but it’s not as easy as flipping a switch either. I’m sure if they thought there was a significant audience out there, they’d do it.

Frankly parking and traffic to Starfire is a giant pain
A 7:00 o’clock game at Starfire means fighting rush hour traffic on I-5 or 405. Parking is also a problem with all the youth games going on at the same time. I’m sure more people would watch from the comfort of their homes. Add in a couple of streaming ads before, after and at half-time and the feed should pay for itself.
also last night im pretty sure a lot of sounders fans were watching the gold cup which didnt end till 7
and depending on where you live, it could be a pain to get to starfire.
im sure a lot of them would have watched a stream
That was the only time they've had video for that team this season

but they also had sound for the sounders portland reserve game
and i wouldnt mind that either
The Timbers radio partner had space to carry the game
Seattle’s radio partner will claim they don’t.

Impressions on my first Reserve Game
First, a big round of thanks to Dave for the advice and notes he provided for attending our first game. I wish I’d made it over to the press box to say hi.
I really only got to focus on the game itself during the first half. Sheridan impressed me in the first 15 minutes, but after that I thought he seemed to disappear. No doubt Janicki was covering him and he was likely gassed after the flight, as others have noted.
Estrada, Montano and especially Tetteh really impressed me.
During the second half, our six-year-old daugther was getting kinda antsy, so we spent more time taking in the atmosphere — trying to identify the first team players watching the game in the opposite stands, watching Montero (who briefly sat in the public stands!), checking out the amenities and so on. The Starfire campus is beautiful and it was inspiring to watch all the youth soccer going on as well.
We all had an awesome time. If you haven’t been to a reserve game yet, I can’t recommend it enough. The chance to see the players up close and talk with them can’t be beat. After the game we stood along the walkway and chatted up the players, giving huzzahs to those who played well. Roger Levesque, a family favorite, stopped by and spent longer with us than he needed to, and he seemed to do that with everyone — you can tell he loves the role of being the goodwill ambassador for the team.
Seriously, it was such a great experience that my wife wants me to take Monday off from work so we can go to the next Reserve game. What a great time.
