What Are We Calling CenturyLink Field?
The signs aren't quite up, but Qwest Field has officially been renamed CenturyLink Field. Personally, I'm struggling with what to call it. For whatever reason, I had no problem calling it Qwest, but I really don't like the idea of calling it Century Link. It's high time the Sounder at Heart community settle on a name.
The best way to do that? POLL!!!!!!!!
I can't speak for Dave, but I'm willing to abide by whatever wins this poll. If that means ECS floods it with votes for Royal Brougham Park (RBP), so be it. If fans of #thoughtsfrommyyacht want to rally to the support of The Dock, I'll be even happier. Heck, I'm going to put CenturyLink Field in the options just to give them a fair chance of sending thousands of extra hits our way (so sue me).
I will say this, though, I'm only going to consider votes that get at least one positive comment. So, if CenturyLink thinks they are going to outwit me with a bunch of bots, well, they better get at least one customer service rep to pose as a real reader...
FanPosts only represent the opinions of the poster, not of Sounder at Heart.

I want to move forward with the official name
and go with CLink. (I’m pronouncing it Sea-Link, not Clink – is that the right way?)
I have a feeling people are going with Clink not C-Link if this wins

Take your pick.
I’d rather side with history over a corporation that’ll probably re-brand again in 5 years anyway.

THIS
I’m not a fan of constant corporate re-naming to the highest bidder. The Sears Tower is still the Sears Tower to me.
To that end, I’m just sticking with Qwest. It was built with that name and that is the name it’s known by around the world.

It wasn't Qwest Field until 2003
When the Sounders played the first sporting event there it was just called Seahawks Stadium.

I'm fine with whatever since they stole Qwest from us
If it goes by CenturyLink Field then I’m just going to refer to it as The Link. There’s just something that makes shorter names stand out (ie Qwest, SafeCo, The Link…).

C-Link (not clink) is awesome. Plus You could think of it as Sea-Link and give it a little hometown flair.

I think C-Link is the best option there
so I voted ‘other’ for the grass-roots name.
Second that
CenturyLink Field
= CLF
= The Cliff
C-link
I think the results are a bit skewed at this point, because C-link didn’t have its own option. We’re split between Clink and other. Needs to unify under 1 banner, methinks. This grassroots thing is hard.
Well, we may have a run off...
If “Clink” and “other” are more than Royal Brougham Park, I promise to let the vote come down to those two :)

…I’m still a bitter Bay Area fan that lost Candlestick to the likes of Monster Cable and 3Com. Poppycock! And the whole ATT to PacBell Park. Stick with a name and plop your logo next to it since it changes every 3-7 years.
It has nothing to do with soccer, but how can you envy the Phili Eagles Jer? Matter of fact, how can you envy anything from Phili? ;)

Looks like CLink was starting to pull away...
but somehow RBP received over 20 votes today. Hmmm… All I’ll say is when I wanted to double check the box office hours for C****** L*** Field yesterday, I subconciously googled: “Qwest Field box office hours.” And I received my CCL ticket in the mail today and noticed the ticket stubs still have giant Qwest logos on them. It’s going to take a lot of work on CLink’s behalf to fully wash Qwest from our brains.
History vs Corporate revisionism
Companies and their sponsorship can come and go but Seattle sports history is forever.
That is why I like calling it Royal Brougham Park. For those who do not know the story of the man, Royal Brougham, read on http://www.historylink.org/index.cfm?DisplayPage=output.cfm&file_id=7395
for anyone thinking RBP is just a soccer thing, he has even closer Seahawaks ties:
“Brougham passed on after suffering a massive heart attack in a Kingdome press box during the closing minutes of a Seattle Seahawks/Denver Broncos football game. Brougham was rushed to Swedish Hospital, and as he was being wheeled from the stadium toward a waiting ambulance, he made sure to ask an elevator operator for the score”
That is a true sports fan and who better to honor with our sports stadium’s name; Someone with as much (or more) passion for local sports as modern Seattle fans or an out-of-state corporation with no local ties?
How much soccer did he cover?

I thought CLink was a joke when people first started using it. Why the loyalty to corporate brands? You are going to have to change your votes every couple years lol. It’s kind of a forced flavor of the week. Royal Brougham Park is Seattle.

Practicality
Is it practical to change what we call it every couple years when a new sponsor buys the rights or buys the company that had the rights? I would prefer to just use a stable name that exists regardless of who or what technically owns the rights. Although I know this analogy is imperfect, consider Hec Edmunson Pavilion at UW. Outside of official broadcasts/publications, etc, no one called it Bank of America Arena and no one is calling it Alaska Airlines Arena. No one will call it anything but Hec Ed or Hec Edmunson Pavilion when the next company purchases rights. It’s not about being anti-corporate, but I think it is ironic that people will change what they call the stadium so readily because of some transaction completely unrelated to sports. Please keep your replies positive.
by Chris Norman on Jul 9, 2011 10:46 AM PDT up reply actions
The difference of course
Is that Hec Ed was the original name of the building. Seahawks Stadium/Qwest Field/Century Link Field has never in anyway been known as Royal Brougham Park until 2009 when some supporters decided to start calling it that to spite the blatant corporate name.

The votes today...
are because ECS finally showed up. :)
In four hours, the post I wrote on the ECS board got 99 views. If we snagged 20 votes for RBP today, then that means only 1/5 of the automatons at ECS followed my command and came here and voted for RBP.
Damn, I better work on their restraining bolts. :)
Okay, seriously… the arguments for “Royal Brougham Park” (or RBP for short) are pretty good ones.
First, history. Royal Brougham was a hell of a guy. He was the sports editor for the PI for about a million years, back when newspapers were how people actually got their news- and the PI had the best sports section in town. (Seriously. It’s true. It was the best up until, oh, 1995 or so.)
Royal Brougham was a man of the people. He established a scholarship fund that exists even today, supporting young Christian athletes in higher education. (As a Buddhist, I’m ineligible for it, but what the heck- I admire someone who created something for such a superb purpose as education, and impressed that it’s lived on for decades after its creator.)
While he was the sports editor, he had enormous power, and for the most part he used it fairly wisely.
Brougham’s name is on the street that runs between our two excellent stadiums.
And he suffered a fatal heart attack in the Kingdome while covering a Seahawks game. On the stretcher, being taken to the hospital, he tugged on the shirt of the elevator operator and asked “what’s the score?”
THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is someone who’s into sports.
Second, RBP is non-corporate. He’s Seattle, he’s us, he’s a fan and a supporter and a guy who loved sports. He’s not some gee-whizzy sounding name that’s spelled funky (Qwest, CenturyLink) or made up.
Third, RBP has already been in use for a few years. This nickname for our home adorns the ECS scarves from last year. Our present roundel version of our logo calls us the “Brougham Faithful” and it’s not strictly an ECS thing, either- other groups refer to the Brougham End. Arlo White paid a bit of homage to Brougham during a broadcast once last season.
Fourth, it works for both the Sounders and the Seahawks. A guy who died while at a Seahawks game, after he worked for decades to promote sports in this city and covered the team? Awesome.
Fifth… it’s more or less permanent. We don’t have to change the nickname of the stadium when the corporate overlords who are lining Paul Allen’s pockets change. This year it’s CenturyLink- what if AT&T buys them a year or three from now? New nickname time? That’s BS. The best stadiums are always the same, IMO.
Sixth, it mostly stems from soccer. It’s time for us to assert our power and place among the sports community of Seattle. If we take this opportunity to make this OUR name for OUR home right now, by football season it’ll have taken root… and the effort can be led by soccer.
Now is the time, folks. Clink, C-link, yawn. Kowtowing to a corporation whose only motive is profit. “The Dock” is too esoteric and lofty and a bit snooty and in-jokey… exactly all the stereotypes that suck about soccer fans. SoDo stadium makes no sense, Seahawks Stadium ignores the Sounders, Qwest is dead and gone.
Royal Brougham Park. The people’s park.
by Blue Eyed Buddhist on Jul 8, 2011 1:35 AM PDT reply actions
That's great and all
but for RBP to pick up 50 votes in 1 day from a bunch of people who don’t frequent this site is a bit silly. Clearly the folks who frequent weareecs prefer RBP and that is just fine. Where it gets weird is in this instance. I also saw an ECSer chastize someone on the Sounders website for calling it the CLink. Royal Brougham Park is a great name, it’s just not my preferred name. And calling it the CLink is not “kowtowing to a corporation whose only motive is profit,” because it doesn’t even use the company’s full name. Regardless, it would be nice if everyone was allowed their own opinion without a large group of people shoving their opinions down other people’s throats.
I really don't get that either
ECS had no problem calling it Qwest. Nobody has a problem calling our baseball and basketball stadiums Safeco Field and Key Arena respectively. The anti-corporate stuff really gets on my nerves. We’re not in high school listening to Anti-Flag anymore people. This is not a dig at ECS, just what I see around Seattle in general.
by chrisperry1983 on Jul 8, 2011 8:55 AM PDT up reply actions
RBP
Actually, ECS has been using Royal Brougham Park on the news stories at their site since spring 2009. More and more members have been catching on to use that name in the past couple years, and obviously now that the sponsor name changed, even more people are switching to RBP.
Its even worse in other cities
Generic anti-corporate crap in general is annoying. Where would team, leaguem and USA be without corporate money?

You don't find it odd that it took so long
I am not a Supporter | I am not a Fan | I am a Sounder

No...
…because we’ve been busy. :)
A few people mentioned the poll in various chatter on the ECS board (you DO have a few readers there, obviously all the more educated and wise Souders fans) but the vast majority of the group’s energy has been going towards hating Portscum, arguing about whether or not Sigi should be fired (those supporting that are NOT SaH readers!), and rumoring about various possible new players.
That’s in addition to the usual million other things that are chattering.
So it’s not “odd” other than it took me a while to write the post that I’ve been meaning to write there, saying “hey, they’re running a poll, we should vote in it”, which is what I did.
It does point out one thing, though- SBN’s format (or your format, anyway) is not conductive to catching up on back posts. If someone doesn’t log in for a day or three, and your front page is busy with posts, things fall off the page. There’s a lot of clutter on your page- it’s definitely not “clean” in the sense that there’s boxes here and there for this and that.
I love me my SaH but hate that part of the site. It’s not exactly a full-on traditional blog, it’s not exactly a full-on traditional newspaper or magazine with daily/weekly setup… it’s kind of in between. And while there’s a lot of strengths to that, there’s some weaknesses as well.
One of those is that once something’s off the front page, it’s gone, and people don’t generally notice it unless called to their attention, and that’s what happened with this poll.
by Blue Eyed Buddhist on Jul 8, 2011 5:48 PM PDT up reply actions
This was actually never on the main front page
but only existed in the sidebar under FanPosts (these actually stay visible longer) so the trick I’m about to teach everyone won’t help.
Click ARCHIVES once in a while. Because due to circumstances outside of the blog someone is able to write a lot more than they used to. Stuff will only be on the main front page for 2 or 3 days.
And while you may not like 100% of the content, you need to see some things.
Say the simulated expectations for making the Playoffs or winning the Supporters Shield, or who the heck is Mrisho Ngassa, or the DP strategies post. All within the last week and none on the frontpage any longer.
So if you can’t stop by everyday, again click ARCHIVES

There are people who actually believe Sigi should be fired
Is this the consensus of ECS? or just a few ECS members?
by chrisperry1983 on Jul 8, 2011 6:29 PM PDT up reply actions
That's probably a whole 'nother post...
…but it’s sports fans. If you aren’t dominating your league, winning the championship and so forth, there’s people who aren’t happy.
And for whatever reason, they blame Sigi. Point out that we’ve had huge roster disruptions and that we’ve been more successful than any expansion team in years, it goes right in one ear and out the other.
The other thing- it’s hardly consensus. Only the angriest or most outspoken say anything. The massive majority that say “Sigi is a good coach” don’t post.

The other side of the argument
That is a very biased account of what is going on in the thread.
First of all, nobody is arguing that Sigi should be fired mid-season. The discussion is whether his contract should be renewed when it runs out at the end of the season.
For those who say no, the reason is that the Sounders have not improved during his tenure. Yes, the Sounders had a great first season for an expansion team, and even the second season turned out to be acceptable due to the amazing second half of the season.
But at the same time there are a number of glaring problems that have been there since the first season and Sigi has not been able to fix them. We are by and large the same team as we were the first season. People expect improvement, and they are not convinced that is going to happen with Sigi at the helm.
Stronger midfield
stronger defense, deeper overall roster, better offense, better record = not improved?
I am not a Supporter | I am not a Fan | I am a Sounder
Sounder At Heart
Dave beat me to it
in what I was going to say as far as improvement. I’m curious though, do these people saying these things have a real argument here? What are our alternatives? Hire one of the other castoffs floating around MLS? Hire someone with an accent? Again, this is not directed at ECS. It just baffles me that people would have the gall to make this kind of statement. We’re in a league where parity is celebrated and rigorously maintained. Sigi is a proven winner, (winningest in MLS!) and people are wanting him to be done?
This is what I was referring to in another post that scares the shit out of me, where there’s maybe this minority that screams loud enough to become a majority mob mentality, and our democratic system bites us when STH’s who haven’t a clue rise up and vote someone like Hanauer out. Not that I am calling for the democracy to end – I’m all for it. But with that freedom comes some scary possibilities.

While we're on the subject
There are no sites that have regular content where everything stays equally visible forever. I’m not quite sure what you’re not liking other than we post multiple stories a day and so, unlike some blogs, stuff tends to stay prominently for less time than on other blogs. That said, the stuff never actually goes away. It’s not very hard to search for stuff. You can even scroll to the bottom of the page and see, I believe, more than 30 posts in the order they were posted. We also have a pretty useful “search” tool that is very effective if you at least know a couple of words that might be in the post or comment you’re looking for.
If you have any suggestions that might actually help, I’d love to hear them tho.

RBP is ECSs (supporters groups's) nickname not (necessarily) the average Sounders fan
I am too young to know really know a whole lot about who he was or to have any relation to the history pertaining to him, but have heard a good bit about him over the past couple years.
1. History. It sounds like he was a great guy. He has a street named after him by the stadiums for a reason. We don’t need a street AND a stadium named after a guy who has little to do with the current stadium. I would say the street is more meaningful anyways as it’s probably more permanent than a stadium (and it’s by the stadiums showing his relation to sports in the city).
2. Non corporate. So what? IMO, it’s a forced nickname. There are plenty of names the stadium could be nicknamed that are non-corporate, and plenty of options are available in the poll all of which are better than RBP. Why is having a street by the stadiums to commemorate his legacy not good enough? Also, like chrisperry1983 said above we call all the other stadiums in the area by the corporate names why does CenturyLink Field or whatever need to be different? (not that I want to call it CenturyLink or whatever the next sponsor’s name is)
3. RBP has been used for a few years, by a subset of fans/supporters (and maybe a few others). I have always thought it was a terrible nickname. Just because a subset of people have used it doesn’t mean it should be the only option. Calling that end of the stadium the Brougham End makes sense because it’s next to Royal Brougham Way the street. So keeping it called that fits. Same with being the Brougham Faithful, but that in no way justifies the RBP nickname for the stadium as a whole.
4. working for both Sounders and Seahawks. I see no mention of the Sounders in your explination… I think that speaks for itself in that it works for the Seahawks but not the Sounders.
5. Yes it could be permanent, but so could any fan decided name that we decided to nickname it. C-Link, Clink, Qwest, The Dock, all of those could be permanent as well. Just because someone new buys rights to it doesn’t mean we have to stop calling it whatever it was before.
6. it mostly stems for ECS. I think it’s pretty obvious from just the poll here (before it got highjacked by ECS people who don’t even visit the site regularly) that RBP was about 25% of the votes. Obviously about 75% of people on this site don’t find that name acceptable for our stadium, and we are not any less of a supporter as anyone is ECS or another supporters group.
Now maybe RBP is the majority choice for a nickname I don’t really know. It would be hard to get all 35K+ to vote in any one poll to find out. ECS does not speak for everyone, and just because you can get a bunch of fans to highjack a poll doesn’t prove that. So i would say none of the arguments are very good, but maybe better than any justification someone could give for giving it a real nickname. I don’t think a nickname necessarily needs a justification.
By what name do you think Sounder at Heart should refer to the stadium in which the Sounders play most of their matches?
Why not XBox Pitch?
XBox Pitch is what its called for the Sounders Games!
Why was it left off of the options?
it was suggested...
But it’s actually the official name of hte actual pitch.

It is "The Place" every player wants to play!
So I think from now on we call it “The Pitch” as it is the largest most knowledgeable audience in the league!
New England plays in “The empty”
Chivas the "LA Movers" or "LA Renters" etc.
Why not "The Big Phone Booth"
I called it that before, so I’ll keep calling it that now and in the future.
