Around SBN: Indy 500: 'Greatest Spectacle In Racing' Set For Sunday

Hopefully, league officials look at the first three Cascadia Cup matches and see what they're looking for. According to this report in the Oregonian, there were no arrests and just two people ejected from the game on Sunday. As a comparison, the article points out that nine people were ejected from the 2009 Civil War football game between Oregon and Oregon State. Assuming the various supporters groups can hold it together for matches against the Vancouver Whitecaps, this seems to point in the direction of more tickets being allocated for away supporters.

Good work to all fans on both sides for behaving like adults!

More away allocation?

I was happy with buying from the secondary market so I could sit in non-obstructed seats. Was a bit miffed when their security tried to re-seat us in the supporters section, so we held the line and told them we wanted what we paid for. Simple as that, they let us through.

More away allocation could lead to more drunk buses… not sure if that’s what I want. Would love for some portion of tickets to somehow be set aside for non-SGs (even though I too am an SG member). Just my two cents.. I’ll stop kicking the horse.

by bmvaughn on Jul 11, 2011 8:06 AM PDT reply actions

Ways to handle that...

No reason that more tickets couldn’t be allocated for away support and sold to other STHs.

As a non SG affiliated fan

I would support additional tickets in the visitors section on a first come, first serve basis to STHs. If SG members get a hold of them first, then so be it. But I don’t think they should get to control anymore tickets than they already do.

by B-Lot tailgater on Jul 11, 2011 8:34 AM PDT up reply actions

I was on one of these "drunk busses"

and yeah, I had a couple beers on the way down, but frankly I was so busy before, during, and after the match I was basically stone sober, and it didn’t sacrifice my enjoyment of what was truly one of the most epic victories I have ever witnessed one bit. As a SG member I think you should know better than to play the “they’re all drunk” card. I also think you should probably acknowledge that it is the hard work and tireless dedication of VOLUNTEER SG organizers who even make this kind of away travel possible. The reason the SG’s get the allocation is because they are who puts on the show, so to speak… not the F.O. or the STH’s – not even the Alliance (and I DO NOT mean to knock the Alliance here).

And the reason that security wanted to put you into the supporters section was actually for your own well-being and enjoyment, as much as you probably reject that idea… there were plenty of people who had non-supporter section seats who were GLAD to be movd in with us!

Those buses are sold as pre-game rolling bars where you can and should get hammered.

This idea that fans will default to violence simply because the game being attended is a soccer game is insulting and offensive to adults.

In every other major sport in this country, fans are almost always mixed throughout the crowd. If NFL and NBA fan bases can “handle” mixing, why can’t MLS?

by malcontentjake on Jul 11, 2011 10:17 AM PDT up reply actions

The problems with NFL crowds go way beyond team affiliation

I have seen more fights between Seahawks fans than I have with them and away fans.

And the incident in LA, while extremely unfortunate, is a rare case.

by B-Lot tailgater on Jul 11, 2011 10:23 AM PDT up reply actions

Your citing drunkards being asshats, though

Not every mixing and integration ends in a fight.

Those that see these types of problems usually (read: not always) invite the behavior based on their own.

by ABTsportsline on Jul 11, 2011 11:46 AM PDT up reply actions

I think that's just my preference

I tihink soccer is much more similar to the college sports atmpsphere wise, so I do not see mixed crowd at Alabama – Auburn. For both of Vanocuver and Timbers here, I was close to random Timbers and Vancouver fans, and I hated every second when they celebrated their goals. There were no incidents, but you know how easy is to start. It is just enough if someone trows some beer or water.

by seattle 13 on Jul 11, 2011 10:23 AM PDT up reply actions

MLS has more to lose

They’re less well-established than the other leagues, have a more family-friendly image that they’re trying to protect while still ecouraging supporters’ culture, and the perception of soccer hooliganism, justly or unjustly, means that the same incidents will reflect more poorly on MLS than they would on, say, the NFL.

by Tohoya on Jul 11, 2011 11:21 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree

In my case, my brother lives in Portland and is a timbers fan and I live up here and am of course a Sounder fan. It would be stupid if we couldn’t sit together during the game. Fortunately, I don’t think they would make a rule like that unless lots of bad incidents happen. So, I’m glad yesterday went off well. Good job on all sides by all the fans. I didn’t really know what to expect.

Yesterday, my brother had tixs in T Army section for both of us. I wanted to see how bad or not bad it would have been. The usher was on our side (specifically mentioning the owner), but he still said we couldn’t do it (because I was wearing a Keller jersey). Usher called his boss, she came over. My brother was angry about them not letting me in, I didn’t care. Boss woman came back 10 minutes later & gave us new tixs in 2nd row right in front of Sounder section. I was happy to be with my people, but I think it also would’ve been fun to be more mixed in with T fans too.

I would hope we don’t get so crazy like some places where I hear there is netting around the visitors group.

I have the same thing

brother in portland that is a Timbers fan. I got to watch the game with him. I was about the only Sounder fan in the section. Had a great time. Reading Timbers blogs though it sounds like most the TA wants all away fans in a cage. Apparently they think they can not control themselves.

by B-Lot tailgater on Jul 12, 2011 7:44 AM PDT up reply actions

Timbers supporter here…

Yeah, I think it’s getting a little out of hand when folks are wanting away supporters ONLY in their section. I do believe a Timber fan does NOT belong in the ECS section, nor does a Sounder fan belong in the TA section.

I wish Stubhub and scalpers did not exist. I wish STH would NOT sell to the visitors. I wish the stadium was PACKED with the home team, and all the visitors had access to was the away supporter section, and tickets with friends and family that owned the ticket, and chose to bring their away friend or family…

As for non TA\ECS sections, visiting supporters should be allowed. I do believe a little humility is in order, and I personally do not think wearing your colors is respectful in someone elses house. That is just my opinion…

by SMP PDX on Jul 12, 2011 9:44 AM PDT up reply actions

I'll take my check now...

…for generating so much controversy (and ad revenue!)

For this match, my buddies and I had 3 criteria by which we wanted to plan our trip:
1) Go down on Saturday so we could enjoy Portland
2) Don’t drink to excess on Sunday so we could enjoy the match
3) Have good seats so we could enjoy the match

The way in which away seats were officially allocated to SGs, and the way that SGs were required by the league to handle their distribution/sale (with coordinated busing) knocked #1 and #3 down.

So sure, we could have purchased SG tickets, sat in a less than desirable section (than our preferred mid-pitch, 2nd level), and gone down/back on Sunday and still enjoyed ourselves. We just wanted a little more…

So to sum up… if more away allocation happens, I’d prefer it to be:
1) In a slightly better location to view the match
2) Available via more than just SGs so we’re not tied into the busing and thus someone else’s schedule – to be fair, I didn’t look into GFC/NES tickets, perhaps that was possible

I don’t see #1 happening, so I’m hoping at least #2 does.

In the end, we still got 3 points… and if none of this happens, I’ll still be happy to go back next year and sit where I can!

by bmvaughn on Jul 11, 2011 2:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Agree in intent with #2

I don’t think it has to be a SG vs non-SG distribution thing, but having an option to purchase an away ticket only (no bus) is what I was missing. Make me show up to the gate when the buses get there so we can go in as a group? Fine. Make me leave the stadium with all the other away fans? Fine. I get both of those as security precautions. And I prefer a hard segregation line between home/away fans as well.

But I refuse to take down-and-back trips so I stayed in Seattle for this one, and will for all future away matches that require a bus purchase.

by Matthew on Jul 11, 2011 3:14 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

To get around this...

…I understand the TA had a “Seattle pick-up” location. You’d get bused-in from a park & ride to stick to the MLS rules. Would have been a nice offering, but still would prefer to make it there myself without a required bus purchase. Hands were tied in this one, though, as I understood.

by bmvaughn on Jul 11, 2011 3:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Hard segregation is dumb

TA are going absolutely nuts that people walked around their stadium in a sounders jersey. They act as if at any moment the entire TA is just going to pounce on the guy and rip their bowels out. Do they feel they have no control? If so they perhaps THEY should not be in the stadium.

I am have been an opposing fan in stadiums and never had a problem. Do not be a dick and people generally treat you the same.
