Hate to keep lingering on the Manchester United match, but this is a pretty great video that includes audio from Arlo and Sigi. The difference in mood between the first and second halves are predictably stark. Worth noting is Sigi's reaction at the end of the match, which is quite literally a shoulder shrug. I do think he was legitimately embarrassed, but he's obviously not popping mad. I think that's probably a very similar reaction to many fans, and one that is perfectly reasonable.

As another commenter noted about this video at MLS-Rumors.net

around the 5:05 mark, when Sigi says "We made a conscious decision" to give everyone playing time, the Asst. Coach (the commenter says its Tom Dutra) pops right up and goes at Sigi with his finger waiving. After viewing a few times, it does look like that asst coach is making an emphatic point to Sigi’s last statement. One must really wonder what he said.

Yeah, that was me.

Just a weird thing. Surprised they left something like that in the video.

Hmm....

Didn’t notice that the first time around. Two thoughts:

1) He could have been saying, “Sigi, don’t beat yourself up..” Pointing at him like, “That’s exactly right, so don’t be so down.”

More likely:

2) He could have been the lone coach prior to the game to voice his opinion about not playing everybody, and thus been pissed off that we were getting killed. Does’t seem like the right time to go after Sigi though.

I dunno. We’ll never know.

by nicktjacob on Jul 23, 2011 1:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Actually..

That first scenario can’t possibly be how it went down. Dutra gets up, tilts his head, shakes his head “no,” and then points his finger. Definitely signs of anger, not affirmation.

Still not the right time for Dutra to do that though, IMO.

He could be defending Boss

To the casual Boss looked the worst, but we all know that it was as much the breakdowns in mid and the back that doomed us in the second half. Dutra’s the Keeper coach after all and before the phrase that brought Dutra up, Sigi says “Every chance we get, they save.” then looks RIGHT at where Dutra is sitting, you can see his cleats which match the next shot, he seems to be in more of a reclining posture whereas in the following shot he’s more tense elbows on knees hands wrought in front of his mouth, and Sigi says, “We’ve had as many good looks as they’ve had…”

Agree that such a demonstrative aggressive in your face finger pointing move is best behind closed doors, we don’t know the relationships, but yeah it looks bad.

This video seems to be an about face versus Sigi’s postgame press conference, and he was a long time coming out, I’m wondering if he got the business from the FO before that press conference, not that I disagree with the new policy of playing our starters for longer in the future.

Wow thanks

That is a coil video to see. I wish we could get more like this to get a glimpse on the inside.

He's right though

The difference is purely in the taking of chances. The angles weren’t good at any of those chances but they were full chances

Wish we could get these for every game

I know it would be a pain to mic Sigi up before every game, but this would be awesome to have more often. Maybe each of the coaches could take turns being mic’d up or something so that it isn’t a pain for just one. I’d love to get some more insight into what they’re thinking during the course of a match.

Hey, don’t we have a couple of alliance council members around here? Maybe they could get the club to “lift the curtain” a little more often like this. Very cool.

It's something that they have done for friendlies before

Since the game doesn’t matter they can have a bit more access. Would we really want to have him mic’d against Houston and thereby helping later teams?

Not sure it would help other teams

The NFL does this all the time and they do it with players on the field. The editor can make sure that it doesn’t “help other teams” by being careful what content he included. It wouldn’t be hard to ensure we don’t “tip our hand” to later teams that we play any more than televising the game does.

I just think this video reminded me a lot of those CCL 360 videos they did, and I’d like to see the Sounders do more of that kind of stuff.

by K61 on Jul 23, 2011 11:25 AM PDT up reply actions

Maybe the NFL has changed since I paid attention

but they release that stuff after the season, not days after the game.

And if you don’t think there’s a difference between what the coach tells players and how a tv broadcast can inform an opponent what’s the point of doing this?

I wish I'd payed closer attention to this last season

but I believe the NFL is starting to have sideline footage be used during the week after the game for features.

Anyway, it isn’t necessarily about tactics, but it is a lot of fun seeing the sideline dynamics. Whether the coach is laid back or a screamer, if a player is vocal/how they support their team mates, etc. That sort of thing adds a lot of color w/out any practical risk.

Monday night football

On Monday night football, they’ll often “mic up” two payers, one from each team, and play some “highlights” towards the end of the game from their perspective.

Obviously this is different than the tv broadcast, and I’m starting to wonder if you watched the video Jeremiah is sharing. There’re not secrets being revealed, just the coaches reactions to the plays as they occured. No strategy secrets being revealed, just some raw comments about how things were happening as they happend.

by K61 on Jul 23, 2011 6:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Actually there is direct commentary about what is expected of a player at a specific point

Something to the effect of “if such&such you must do”

I should also admit that my level of access to the team

may color my interest in things such as this.

NFL Sound FX airs days after

http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-films-sound-efx
“Sound FX
Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10:30 PM EST
Sound FX features a ‘best of’ theme highlighting an NFL great on Tuesday nights and a compilation of the sound from the previous Sunday’s games on Wednesday.”

A lot is players mic’d up, some is coaches, as you said below you have a higher level of access but for the less connected among us which is probably 99%, this is fun to see.

I don’t believe tactically there’s much advantage for other coaches in videos such as this as they’ll be more interested in the game film which will tell them more than random sometimes out of context comments will. Occasionally it might provide some insight into something, I don’t dispute that, I just think game video will tell a much more complete and telling story, not to mention the new OPTA stats.

Fantastic video

Great to see MLSSoccer.com continuing to put out great featurettes like this.

actually...

This was soundersfc.com. most of the really good video you’ll see on the sounders is produced in house.

While we're still talking about ManU...

I notice they started a practically all-subs lineup against Chicago today, with the result that the Fire managed to go in at halftime up 1:0. Chicago kept most of their starters on the field (and their grip on the lead) until around the hour mark, at which point ManU brings in Rooney, Nani, Rafael, Park, etc. to face the Fire’s reserves. What happened thereafter was pretty predictable — 0:3 over the last twenty-four minutes. Which wouldn’t be notable, except for this comment from “MLS_analyst” on the MLSSoccer.com liveblog:

This Fire vs. ManU 2nd half confirmed my suspicion that the Red Devils would be strong favorites to win the MLS Reserve League.

I think that pretty much sums up what we can take from their visit here as well.
