Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Seattle Sounders At Los Angeles Galaxy - Gamethread

CARSON CA - JULY 4: Landon Donovan #10 of the Los Angeles Galaxy warms up before the game against the Seattle Sounders FC on July 4 2010 at the Home Depot Center in Carson California. (Photo by Jeff Golden/Getty Images) - Can someone stop him please?

What's in team form? Is it 4 wins in six games without a loss? Or ten games without a loss? Or is form getting 64 points in last 34 with a +18 goal differential? Either way, that's the Seattle Sounders right now. This team isn't just hot now. It has been hot for quite some time. Despite changes scattered throughout the standard XI and substitution pattern, Sigi Schmid's squad has been as good in 34 matches as FC Dallas (current PPM leader) is pacing in its half season. They've been doing it with variety as seven players have two or more goals in MLS play, 13 have at least one goal. And they have certainly been doing it with solid defense, averaging less than a goal a game. But there has been one team who has Seattle's number (Seattle 1-3-1 in MLS, 2-3-1 overall), and in what seems to be a 4th of July tradition they face the Los Angeles Galaxy again.

David Beckham (1 Goal, 7 Assists) will almost certainly not be playing, either due to Posh giving birth today or a slightly fractured spine. Neither of those reasons is a joke. Yet, the Galaxy still are a great set-piece team with Landon Donovan (8 Goals, 1 Assist) being their fuel in all varieties of offense. The bigger loss for the Galaxy is probably Donovan Ricketts, who is out with a fractured arm, as well as backup keeper Josh Saunders due to suspension for a Red Card. Brian Perk, formerly of the Philadelphia Union prior to their great goalkeeping purge, will get his first ever MLS start. The 21-year old will be trying to stop the 5th best offense by Goal For per Match and is likely to lean heavily on the defensive core of Gonzalez, DeLaGarza, Franklin, Berhalter.

The game is on ESPN2 and 97.3 FM at 7:30 PM

RSL v NE commentary while I wait for the Sounders match

Wow… what shitty refereeing.
1) Benny was way offside.
2) That may have been a PK, but not a red. Yellow at most.
3) How can Rimando miss the ball on that free kick? Unreal.

At least there's another bad call PK

To even it out. Seems like an even match, with poor ref’ing.

Again the Sounders failing to capitalize on chances

And I’m left to worry that the other team will counter and find the net… It’s happened so many times.

The difference here

is that the Galaxy normally own the Sounders all the way around. To see the Highlighters control so much is positive.

Portland is NOT the “team with all the buzz.” They are a struggling expansion team whose charm is wearing off as they keep losing.

NCAA for some reason wanted to make completely different rules.

On top of those differences, the referees aren’t the same as you’ll find in the state/tournament ladders. Different certification and promotion/demotion for them as well.

Sad that we didnt pick up ground on LA

A point is decent knowing that we played LA on the road, but still, I felt like we should have won that game. Man…Montero is such a great free kick taker, why isn’t he a great PK taker?

by SeahawksPhan on Jul 4, 2011 9:46 PM PDT reply actions

True, but if he can kick his penalty kick in the upper half of the frame, it's nearly impossible for the goalie to save since they dive

I know it’s more risky because there’s a greater chance of hitting it off target, but Montero’s spot-on on his free kicks, so it would be cool to see him be able to do that on PKs as well.

I believe Montero’s like…0/2 on PK kicks so far? I remember him missing one last year as well.

by SeahawksPhan on Jul 4, 2011 9:53 PM PDT up reply actions

one against the 0-1 loss to NE in 09 at home.

by gstommylee on Jul 4, 2011 9:54 PM PDT up reply actions

it doesn't

look as bad since its spread over 3 seasons. Now 0-3 in a single season now that’s bad.

by gstommylee on Jul 4, 2011 10:57 PM PDT up reply actions

At least

we didn’t lose ground.

by gstommylee on Jul 4, 2011 9:53 PM PDT up reply actions

A point on the road against a top tier team is always a good result.

No matter how easily it feels we could have had more.

Now with more lemon bars!
