Seattle Sounders At Los Angeles Galaxy - Gamethread
What's in team form? Is it 4 wins in six games without a loss? Or ten games without a loss? Or is form getting 64 points in last 34 with a +18 goal differential? Either way, that's the Seattle Sounders right now. This team isn't just hot now. It has been hot for quite some time. Despite changes scattered throughout the standard XI and substitution pattern, Sigi Schmid's squad has been as good in 34 matches as FC Dallas (current PPM leader) is pacing in its half season. They've been doing it with variety as seven players have two or more goals in MLS play, 13 have at least one goal. And they have certainly been doing it with solid defense, averaging less than a goal a game. But there has been one team who has Seattle's number (Seattle 1-3-1 in MLS, 2-3-1 overall), and in what seems to be a 4th of July tradition they face the Los Angeles Galaxy again.
David Beckham (1 Goal, 7 Assists) will almost certainly not be playing, either due to Posh giving birth today or a slightly fractured spine. Neither of those reasons is a joke. Yet, the Galaxy still are a great set-piece team with Landon Donovan (8 Goals, 1 Assist) being their fuel in all varieties of offense. The bigger loss for the Galaxy is probably Donovan Ricketts, who is out with a fractured arm, as well as backup keeper Josh Saunders due to suspension for a Red Card. Brian Perk, formerly of the Philadelphia Union prior to their great goalkeeping purge, will get his first ever MLS start. The 21-year old will be trying to stop the 5th best offense by Goal For per Match and is likely to lean heavily on the defensive core of Gonzalez, DeLaGarza, Franklin, Berhalter.
The game is on ESPN2 and 97.3 FM at 7:30 PM

RSL v NE commentary while I wait for the Sounders match
Wow… what shitty refereeing.
1) Benny was way offside.
2) That may have been a PK, but not a red. Yellow at most.
3) How can Rimando miss the ball on that free kick? Unreal.
Even Taylor Twellman called him offside
But later retracted it on twitter. So I’m not the only one :)
Don't want to go crazy with thread hijacking...
…but why didn’t Wingert and Beckerman start? Did they think NE would be a pushover? Not with MLS refs…
Don't have ESPN anymore =(
Good thing there’s ESPN3!!!
My Sounders score prediction: Sounders 1-0
Just checked ESPN3...the Seattle game isn't there in the "Upcoming" section =(
Why aren’t they showing it on ESPN3?!?
are you sure??
I’m counting on ESPN 3 as well….

It's listed under featured matches.
And listed on ESPN’s homepage as on ESPN3 later. I have no doubts.
He's not in the injury report.
I’d guess he’s just getting a rest.

and here I assumed that they just hated my eyeballs.

Adam Serrano:
The Angel City Brigade just displayed an impressive banner ahead of the match. An LA Galaxy adorned Death Star shooting down the Space Needle. Impressive.
oh my gosh...the announcers have already started the Montero bashing....

Nothing here
Was going to say you need a better audio system, but more than likely you have a great one and can hear stuff the rest of us don’t :)
AH LEVESQUE!
Gotta put that on frame and make Perk make a play.
Well..
You don’t really need to.. John Harkes hates the Sounders and especially Montero. That’s all you need to know.
ESPN generally hates anything that isn’t the east coast or LA.

One has to wonder
who the hell is making these decisions. Montero is not even remotely the best PK guy on the team!
Is Dave around?
Curious on your thoughts about Montero taking the PK.
Crummy take
The keeper was leaning before he took it blarrrghh
Oh Hurtado
Jeff Parke is laughing at you right now.
it didn't look like a particulary good PK strike .....and i HATE these announcers....
Life's what happens while you're making other plans
Too much momentum from Seattle.
Time for all of the Galaxy players to fall over.

But 7500 did this during the World Cup last summer. Go to 7500 and search front page posts for Harkes.

Again the Sounders failing to capitalize on chances
And I’m left to worry that the other team will counter and find the net… It’s happened so many times.
The difference here
is that the Galaxy normally own the Sounders all the way around. To see the Highlighters control so much is positive.
Agreed
But the sting of Opening Night won’t go away.

typical
of ESPN to talk about random crap.
Hail Portland! (WTF)
Just like ESPN commentators to ignore an LA-SEA game between two GOOD teams and ramble on about Portland.
Apparently
being 8h in your conference isn’t playing like an expansion team! At least they’re better than….the other expansion team!

Harkes really does not care for anything Seattle, does he?
i wish there wasn’t a delay as I’m having Arlo withdrawls
Life's what happens while you're making other plans
And let's be clear
Portland is NOT the “team with all the buzz.” They are a struggling expansion team whose charm is wearing off as they keep losing.
But they are hosting the ESPN MLS game of the week next week!
That means that on ESPN, they obviously have all the buzz.

We're throwing in service from 30+ yards out and handing possession away
No creativity in LA’s half right now
ESPN: "He's definitely not offsides"
I just replayed it 3 times, he was offsides every time.
Sounders 'til I die
it seems we are really missing speed up front....
we’re playing decent defense…. things up front just seem a bit slow an disjointed….

There is no such thing as a last-second-goal in soccer. Sure, you can score late, but there are no “buzzer beaters”
There is in NCAA soccer.
Clocks count down.

NCAA for some reason wanted to make completely different rules.
On top of those differences, the referees aren’t the same as you’ll find in the state/tournament ladders. Different certification and promotion/demotion for them as well.

Buy we haven’t really threatened with it.

BUT there is a half hour left. At the pace LA was playing from 45-60, they will be knocking on the door at least once more.

i'm not one to get nit-picky about Montero, but is he playing a tad sluggish tonight?
he just seems a step or two off for some reason and out of sync….. don’t get me wrong, I love Fredy and I know he has a style of play all his own….

I wish that was

Noonan has looked pretty good so far.

Beckham “Great ball”

Nope
not too many Seattle options in the box.. Harky said so. But don’t tune this game out yet when LA gets the ball!
bleh
i did not get my entertainment value out of this game than the RSL – NE game
It's
a point and no one’s hurt against the Galaxy at the HDC.
i'm not
complaining over the point. I just didn’t find it exciting like the earlier game.
It still ended up a exciting game
i mean it could been another 0-0 game like this one with 11 guys still on the field for both teams.
well i got the exciting
MLS game fix in cause i’ll be missing the other team that should be not be named vs seattle next Sunday cause I’ll be in Spokane visiting family.
Sad that we didnt pick up ground on LA
A point is decent knowing that we played LA on the road, but still, I felt like we should have won that game. Man…Montero is such a great free kick taker, why isn’t he a great PK taker?
Free kicks you don't have to worry so much about telegraphing your intent
by Philip Mueller on Jul 4, 2011 9:48 PM PDT up reply actions
True, but if he can kick his penalty kick in the upper half of the frame, it's nearly impossible for the goalie to save since they dive
I know it’s more risky because there’s a greater chance of hitting it off target, but Montero’s spot-on on his free kicks, so it would be cool to see him be able to do that on PKs as well.
I believe Montero’s like…0/2 on PK kicks so far? I remember him missing one last year as well.
i missed
one against the 0-1 loss to NE in 09 at home.
Wow 0/3 is awful
Evans for permanent PK kicker (when he’s on the field)?
it doesn't
look as bad since its spread over 3 seasons. Now 0-3 in a single season now that’s bad.
A point on the road against a top tier team is always a good result.
No matter how easily it feels we could have had more.
Now with more lemon bars!
