Major Link Soccer - Happy Fourth of July Edition
Good morning everyone and a happy belated 4th of July. The Seattle Sounders played the LA Galaxy to a 0-0 tie this weekend and were a bit unlucky not to get the full three points. Young LA goalkeeper Brian Perk did well in his first MLS game to keep a clean sheet including a good PK save against Fredy Montero. Perk was helped in his task by a very stout and determined Galaxy defense that fought through injuries to both A.J. DeLaGarza and Omar Gonzalez.
You can see highlights from the match here. Also, don't forget to vote in the MLS All-star ballot.
Red Bulls Not Done Dealing: It's no secret that the New York Red Bulls are looking to improve their squad during the transfer window. Moving Dwayne De Rosario to DC United for Dax McCarty frees up some valuable cap space for a squad. They're searching for a free-agent keeper and it appears that Marcus Hahnemann is not on their radar. Erik Soler, sporting director for RBNY, thinks the Sounders have already locked up the services of USMNT keeper. Of course, Sigi Schmid knows it's not that easy. Soler is also looking for an outfield player, most likely a center-back to help shore up the reserves when Rafael Marquez or Tim Ream are out.
More links after the jump:
US Women Rout Columbia: The US Women's team's 3-0 win over Columbia on Saturday actually does a disservice to the dominate play of the women's team on Saturday. The scoreline could have easily been 6-0 if the US had been able to finish off more of their many chances on goal. One notable thing from the game is Abby Wambach's inability to buy a goal. The frustration is beginning to show.
Zakuani Works Out: The recovery of Steve Zakuani seems to be going well (photos). This Saturday in training at Starfire, the young midfielder was out in sweats doing some light jogging and fitness work. It was his first time working out at Starfire during training since the injury. We all wish him the best as he works to recover his fitness and his league leading form from earlier this season. The hard work has just begun.
A Look at Hanauer: Sounders general manager and minority owner Adrian Hanauer has done as much as anyone in Seattle to preserve the legacy of top-flight soccer in Seattle. Hanauer was a fan of the NASL Sounders and became an investor in the USL Sounders as a bit of a lark. Later he come to love the team and the dream of bringing a MLS franchise to Seattle. The rest is history as they say.
KC Wins Saad Lottery: Earlier this morning the league held a weighted lottery for Soony Saad. The former Michigan Wolverine scored 19 goals his freshman year before leaving college to try ply his skills in Europe. Saad still needs time to transition to the professional game and is not expected to have an immediate impact for a Sporting Kansas City squad with plenty of talented young strikers.
Whitecaps Playing for Their Jobs: At the start of the season the wise sages in Vancouver were talking about the slow process of building up an expansion team. Following that philosophy they picked for the future with young striker Omar Salgado in the Superdraft. Now, with a new coach, and only two wins this season, the team is scrambling to bring in new players during the transfer window and the old ones are playing for their jobs. You can see the frustration building.

Lolz. Way-Ro? Otherwise, nice job.
Can’t believe SKC won the Saad lottery. They have too many forwards.
Bunbury?
What’s the chance that the FO looks to move one of our defenders to KC for Bunbury? His form has been down as of late, and I recognize that he is commercially popular in the city, but I think it would be a bit of fresh air for him in Seattle, literally…
I doubt it
He’s a huge prospect, and is good as is right now. Plus, we’re going after Tagoe/Forlan/etc right?

Who really knows?
The Bunbury idea was simply thrown out there because of their acquisition to Saad. They cannot possibly hold on to that many forwards without someone moving. I’m all for speculation….
Can someone explain to me
the advantages to staying out of the Saad lottery? My understanding is that it resets at the end of the year… so what types of players would the Sounders be sitting on, hoping to get from a future lottery?
Roster Size?
There’s a limit on roster size, right? So maybe we are planning on bringing in a name or two in the next few weeks and don’t have room.

He's not a GA player
benefits and exemptions don’t apply.

I think he is a GA player, actually
Don’t think he’d be able to be signed, otherwise, since he hasn’t exhausted his college eligibility.

Confirmed, NON-GA
but likely only minimum salary, so still didn’t have a cap impact.
Essentially this means that Seattle thinks that Estrada, Montano and Fucito (low salary attacking players) are all better than he.

More specifically
The Sounders think that keeping Estrada, Montano, and Fucito is better than acquiring Saad and integrating him into the system. There’s something to be said for the value of continuity, and even if Saad was a little bit more skilled than one of those players, maybe you’d rather have the guy who knows the team better.

Thank you for translating my thoughts to words better than I did

We can be nit picky about many things
but I think Hanauer has definitely been a huge part of our success as a franchise (on and off the field). I really hope the majority of fans aren’t stupid enough to vote out Hanauer as GM (next year?).
The vote will be this fall.
Exactly when and how is still being worked on at this time.

oi
I know the team is a democracy and I am all for the power of the people, but putting that decision into the hands of so many snap judgment fans who call Montero lazy and so on makes me nervous at the same time.

It has/was/will be a foundation of the team
Considering I have called Adrian one of the 10 best GMs in American sports I doubt you’ll find me calling for his ouster.

as are others on this site...just to clarify
It’s the meatheads that call for Sigi’s hanging 5 games into the season that make me nervous

Strange question, but why/how the hell did San Jose have 3x their average attendance for the weekend's match?
Dallas also
20,000 down there.
Nos audietis in somniis

Looks like they played at Stanford Stadium
They probably had some kind of fireworks display after the game, I’d guess. I heard a bunch of teams did that this weekend.
Ah, thank you.
Thank you to Aaron as well.

For San Jose they thought that Henry, Marquez, et al
would be a draw. They were right.
I can’t wait until their stadium is done.

Just looked it up. I remember the stadium renderings. Just didn’t realize it was official and on it’s way. Seems kind of small though. 15k? Expandable to 18k?
You'll Never Sail Alone!
Thanks
Now we just need ECS to pick up the song and S@H to do new scarves…
YNSA! ;)

They played in Stanford Stadium instead of Buck Shaw, and it was heavily advertised.

off topic...
But when I was a kid I narrowly avoided a foul ball to the face by Pirkl. I was looking away but luckily the guy next to me put his glove in my face and caught it.
