Chivas USA at Seattle Sounders - Game Thread

Welcome everyone!  Dave and Jeremiah are out of town this weekend so I've taken over game thread duties today.  First off, Chivas USA at home is a winnable game. It's a game that most pundits expect the Sounders to win. However, make no mistake, this won't be an easy game.

Coach Robin Fraser has done an admirable job in turning the Goats around in his first season as head coach starting with a new defensive mindset and organization that gives Chivas USA a puncher's chance in almost any match. He's supplemented the defense with some very good defenders in Heath Pearce and rookie Zarek Valentin. Valentin, while he has the potential to be a league-leading right back, will need to be on top form to contain Alvaro Fernandez and Mauro Rosales. Keeper Dan Kennedy, a top-five keeper by goals-against-average (GAA) is perfectly capable of keeping the Goats in games when the defense struggles. The Sounders will need to provide continuous offensive pressure to crack the Chivas USA defense.

The Chivas USA offense has been much better than expected especially in the back-half of the season. However, they rely heavily on attacking midfielder Nick LaBrocca and striker Justin Braun so shutting those two down will go a long way towards containing the Goats. Shutting down LaBrocca will likely fall to Osvaldo Alonso and that's one area where I'm fairly confident. Braun, on the other hand, has been a real enigma for the Goats this season. Some games he looks absolutely dominate. Others he barely registers on the field. I want the Seattle defense to make him a non-entity for 90+ minutes. To do that, the Seattle center-back team will need to do a much better job marking Braun in the box than they have recently with strikers like Kei Kamara and Brian Ching.

More info on the game and your game-thread are after the jump:

Update from @joshuamayers:
Just saw Brad Evans up in the press box. Looks like he’ll be inactive today (not a big surprise).

Also from @joshuamayers

Absent from that group of reserves I saw were O’Brian White and Jhon Kennedy Hurtado. Might they be available today?

I'd love to see both play today.

Especially OBW. We need a big guy up top badly. At least until Prince Tagoe arrives. ;-)

Suprising

I guess they wanted someone who was more experienced and consistent. I think I’d almost prefer Braun since I thought Parke would be able to mark him into oblivion this game.

by Dizzo on Aug 13, 2011 12:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Then I remembered Scott was the other CB

And now I’m happy again that Braun is riding the pine.

by Dizzo on Aug 13, 2011 12:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Target Forward Noonan

Is my least favorite flavor of Noonan. I still have bad memories from last season when he was forced to play as the target guy. He’s looked better in the midfield especially this year.

by Dizzo on Aug 13, 2011 12:27 PM PDT reply actions

Agreed. Not so sure that I’d prefer Roger though. Both are very underwhelming.

Boo! Tomorrow AM. I want all things now!

Is anyone actually believe

that Scott is a better option at CB then Ianni?

by Colin Johnson on Aug 13, 2011 12:38 PM PDT reply actions

*Does

by Colin Johnson on Aug 13, 2011 12:38 PM PDT up reply actions

I honestly believe it's six of one

So I trust Sigi to pick whichever for a particular match

by ClosetCoug on Aug 13, 2011 12:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Not at all

Sounds like Sigi is saving something for the CCL game on Tuesday. Perhaps JKH and Ianni as the CB pair Tuesday?

by Dizzo on Aug 13, 2011 12:40 PM PDT up reply actions

If that is the case

then I’m ok with it. I assumed that he had beaten Ianni as Scott got the start the last 2 weeks.

by Colin Johnson on Aug 13, 2011 12:42 PM PDT up reply actions

It's really a shame

That there isn’t some sort of system in place where you could add talent to make sure Pat Noonan isn’t starting games at forward for your side…

Yeah, it's called the summer window

And closes Sunday. I feel like I need to sacrifice a small woodland creature to make something happen before all hope for a decent TF fades.

We need a win today

To keep pace. But honestly I am mostly curious to see how the transfer window plays out this weekend. How is LA going to open up a DP spot? Will we actually get someone to sign on the dotted line? SKC trades for back line? Oh cant wait until 9pm Sunday!

Light foul on Mondiani

Free kick in a dangerous area. Good header by Parke to clear it out of the box

Very dangerous cross into the box

Luckily no one on the back post to knock it in

Yellow card on Wahl

Ref is calling it tight, but consistent so far. Also Mondiani is off for Braun.

Great skill by the Honey Badger

splits 2 defenders and gets dragged down from behind. Yellow on Elliott.

by Colin Johnson on Aug 13, 2011 1:52 PM PDT reply actions

Yellow to Simon Elliott

For closelining Alonso. Elliott looks like a homeless man.

by Jackington on Aug 13, 2011 1:52 PM PDT reply actions

That should be a red

Elliott grabs Alonso around the face/neck to prevent a break-away. Only gets a yellow.

by Dizzo on Aug 13, 2011 1:52 PM PDT reply actions

I disagree.

As tight as he’s called this then that’s a red. If that’s not a red then what were the yellows?

by Dizzo on Aug 13, 2011 1:54 PM PDT up reply actions

At least

he got booked. I rather take a yellow then no bookings at all.

by gstommylee on Aug 13, 2011 2:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Yea but Alonso had just faked him out of his shoes.

His hand was probably trailing up there never expecting Alonso to do that.

Now with more lemon bars!

by Fear on Aug 13, 2011 2:06 PM PDT up reply actions

He got the neck/face

But the difference is that it just happened to be where he grabbed hold rather than intentionally targeting that. It’s a rough tackle, but a red would be equally rough.

by Targaff on Aug 13, 2011 2:06 PM PDT up reply actions

No question he got Alonzo's face

but it was effetively a clothesline to stop the counter. Yellow is fair unless your from C American and this is CCL IMO.

by Nevtelen on Aug 13, 2011 2:06 PM PDT up reply actions

No dive at all

but I just think the ref would hesitate to give a red there. It was’t a punch to the face or an elbow, just dragging him down. JMO.

by Nevtelen on Aug 13, 2011 2:08 PM PDT up reply actions

You may be right

I’d have to see the replay again from a couple angles to form a better conclusion. At first blush, it didn’t strike me as a red-card offense though. Just my opinion though.

by wyte_lightning on Aug 13, 2011 2:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Fair enough

I could probably use another look at it myself. I was in mid-comment when it first happened.

by Dizzo on Aug 13, 2011 2:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Poor touch in the box from Noonan

He was in front of his man and it was an okay bounce, if that was a layoff he could’ve done a much better job.

by Targaff on Aug 13, 2011 1:53 PM PDT reply actions

Fair play, though

He’s absolutely honest about his own performance.

by Targaff on Aug 13, 2011 1:55 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree

whether or not Noonan delivers he clearly undestands how to get it done and how to do it. I like that about him.

by Nevtelen on Aug 13, 2011 1:57 PM PDT up reply actions

The first half

played fast! Several good chances for us, a missed PK, a few good chances for Chivas, quick attacking play on both sides, a splash of yellow cards… pretty exciting stuff.

by gstommylee on Aug 13, 2011 1:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Half Time

Fredy has looked great, Flaco and Rosales have played well on the wings. If we had a better TF/ST we would be up at least 1-0. Come on FO, get it done. Great game to watch tho.

Off topic

by Colin Johnson on Aug 13, 2011 1:56 PM PDT reply actions

Wing play has been key

Chivas really using Jazic to attack our right flank. They’ve had some good success with it. A lot of our better chances have come from Fernandez/Wahl on our left side. Riley needs to step up the defense in the 2nd.

by Dizzo on Aug 13, 2011 1:58 PM PDT reply actions

Worse than Pat Noonan's blown chances

Are the multiple occasions wheres Fredy is clearly upset with his positioning.

I wish Friberg had a long shot.

He seems to get 2-3 open looks a game from 30 yards straight out.

by Jackington on Aug 13, 2011 2:06 PM PDT reply actions

Definitely something he should work on

He had some good free kicks earlier this year. Shouldn’t be too hard to translate that skill to a good long shot for when he’s wide open.

Also, I was highly entertained by this take on the Leo call.

by Targaff on Aug 13, 2011 3:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah

Arlo mentioned that last year the same exact ref missed a call when Zak was slide tackled in the box. Then gave a yellow to Zak for flopping.

This time, same thing – although, as Arlo said, if that ISN’T a penalty for Neagle, where is the yellow for simulation?

Aside from a few offsides calls that were questionable.

On review,

you’re right, he pointed for the goal kick right away. Clown shoes.

by moyerLIVES on Aug 13, 2011 3:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Which is also the wrong call

It went off the Chivas player last.

He just royally @$^& that one up.

by Orothar on Aug 13, 2011 3:17 PM PDT up reply actions

It should either have been a PK

Or a yellow on Neagle (simulation), which I think is a free kick.

Or a corner.

Goal kick just… how in the world is that called as a goal kick…

by Orothar on Aug 13, 2011 3:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Well

refs do have a tending see to miss who ever touched the ball last. I mean Chivas was given a corner after the ball was already went out and it was last touched by chivas.

by gstommylee on Aug 13, 2011 3:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Right

Of the bad parts of that call it is the most understandable, but taken in context it really just makes the ref look like he doesn’t have a flipping clue.

by Orothar on Aug 13, 2011 3:22 PM PDT up reply actions

He

points to the spot if its a PK he points to the GK if its a goal kick. It didn’t look like he was pointing to the spot.

by gstommylee on Aug 13, 2011 3:18 PM PDT up reply actions

To be fair,

it is conceivable that he was pointing to the lineman to determine who the ball went off of. The penalty just happened to be between them.

Yeah - and I agree

That PK non-call was laughably terrible. I’m unable to explain what in the hell he was thinking.

But my point was just that for 89 minutes the reffing was just fine. We’ll only remember this game for the 1 minute. AND it is a total non-issue if, in the other half-dozen wide-open chances we had, we finish even once.

by Orothar on Aug 13, 2011 3:10 PM PDT up reply actions

This appears to have been added within the past few minutes. Bravo to whoever added it.

I hope he writes an apology letter to Sigi

After seeing the replay I don’t know how he wouldn’t want to commit suicide for making such a terrible call.

Seppuku

Or Hari Kari. Whichever. I’m fine with it.

I was just wondering what kind of viewer retention there is from Sounders to the Magic School Bus.

Out side from the reffing

is one of those games having an actually proper TF/2nd striker could potentially made a difference. And that is Seattle’s fault for not doing anything about that problem with the other forward spot.

Refs need to be held accountable

They should be put in front of the press at the end of the game. If your going to make a call you sure as hell better be able to stand behind it

by Derek R on Aug 13, 2011 3:13 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

Personally

if he’s not gonna call a PK i guess it would seem fair to book neagle for a dive. Like Arlo said.

by gstommylee on Aug 13, 2011 3:15 PM PDT up reply actions

You just

don’t want players flopping with zero contact. (not that neagle did was a flop)

by gstommylee on Aug 13, 2011 3:15 PM PDT up reply actions

They are put in fornt of the press

The media is allowed to ask him questions but what is he going to say? “It’s tough out there. The game moves pretty fast and I wasn’t in the best position. From what I saw it was not a penalty.”

by Brian23 on Aug 13, 2011 3:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Like why he signled to the spot after the tackle and then changed his mind

But I agree for the most part with what you are saying. I just wish that the ref’s were held more accountable for their calls.

by Derek R on Aug 13, 2011 3:44 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm sure this has been

discussed and answered elsewhere, but for laziness sake. If the refs are to be held more accountable, is that up to FIFA, MLS, USSF? Who is the one that needs to stand up and say, you must answer for your actions?

by expatB on Aug 13, 2011 3:46 PM PDT up reply actions

HAHA

MLS has the non-call as one of their direct-link videos from the MLS front-page.

I don’t know that I’ve seen them directly highlight atrocious reffing before – normally they shove it under the rug, but this one is just SUCH a huge part of the game you cannot ignore it.

by Orothar on Aug 13, 2011 3:16 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah.....

We will see how long that lasts up there.

OBW

Sigi says in the press conference that there has been a complication regarding his previous injury.

by Miki Turner on Aug 13, 2011 3:18 PM PDT reply actions

oh

great. Well so much for seeing him back on the field anytime soon.

by gstommylee on Aug 13, 2011 3:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Thats not good

Hope he’s alright

by Derek R on Aug 13, 2011 3:20 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

No no

AH is working furiously to sign someone before the deadline. This team WILL look different before the end of the transfer window.

I fully expect to hear them announce that they’ve signed a contract with both Didier Drogba and Diego Forlan who will, thanks to modern science, combine into one entity while turning 10 years younger and enter into a 10 year contract for league minimum salary with the Seattle Sounders.

by Orothar on Aug 13, 2011 3:25 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

The only way

I’m okay with this is if that complication’s name is Prince Tagoe.

by bago'juice on Aug 13, 2011 3:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Honestly

i doubt Seattle will sign anyone. I’ll wait till monday to give my grade to Seattle on how they did during the summer transfer window and its not looking to a good grade.

by gstommylee on Aug 13, 2011 3:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Actually

That makes sense, that they would hold him back with an ‘injury’ so that he can be part of some deal that they have in the works. (yes, I’m reaching and hoping here)

To be honest, I’m getting annoyed with all the injured players that we carry. No Zakuani, or necessarily OBW. More like Evans, who plays for 10 minutes and then can’t play for another 5-6 games. He’s too fragile. (And this coming from a fan of Evans when he can play) Sorry if that got off topic.

If you mean a "complication" with the blood clot...

…that probably means the end of his season - if not his career. :(

by regnaD kciN on Aug 13, 2011 3:32 PM PDT up reply actions

I was really surprised

actually at how quickly he came back. From experience with clots, I would have thought he would be out for 6 months at the absolute least.

by expatB on Aug 13, 2011 3:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Well

if that is true most likely that seattle won’t be protecting white in the expansion draft.

by gstommylee on Aug 13, 2011 3:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe

it was the fact the clot was in his leg and not in his lungs or heart? That would be my un-medically-trained guess.

by expatB on Aug 13, 2011 3:37 PM PDT up reply actions

The issue is more likely the blood thinners

If my very limited experience is any guide, the issue is more likely his reaction to the blood thinners rather than the location of the clot. Even a clot in the leg can quickly prove deadly so I don’t think that would be it.

by brokejumper on Aug 13, 2011 3:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Yea

the blood clot was in the leg. But with no details no idea what is going on.

by gstommylee on Aug 13, 2011 3:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Bad Reffing Aside

Sounders will be ruing their missed chances today.

I feel totally deflated.

by expatB on Aug 13, 2011 3:49 PM PDT reply actions

Let me fix that for you
Sounders will be ruing their missed chances today.

Unfortunately its a common problem. I long for a clinical finisher. Even if all the guy does is stand there and shoots when the ball is at his feet.

by Derek R on Aug 13, 2011 3:51 PM PDT up reply actions

...

hell, we will even accept an EPL ref on loan for the remainder of the season.
While he is here, he can give referee classes once a week to all of the MLS “referees”. Maybe it will rub off.

by brandinho on Aug 13, 2011 3:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Even

if we had a EPL ref, Seattle still need to convert those PKs. Getting the call is one thing actually making it is another.
