Sure there's about 10 games left per team, but based on PPG if the playoffs started today and the higher seed WC teams win the play-in games:
(E1) Columbus
(WC1) RSL
(WC4) Chivas
(E2) Philadelphia
(E3) DC United
(W1) Flying Beckonovans
(WC2) Colorado
(WC3) SporKCs
(W2) Dallas
(W3) Seattle
If that's the final playoff field, the fourth place West team will once again have an easier road to the MLS Cup:
In this scenario, RSL's would host a mediocre Chivas squad and punchless Columbus, then managing the away leg in Ohio. Follow that with a challenging but winnable road game against playoff rookies in Philly or maybe D.C.
Compare that with the West battle royale of home/away legs between four very strong and playoff-tested teams (L.A., Colorado, Dallas, Seattle) with a potentially epic conference championship. Yikes. I wonder if betus.com would consider a bet for Salt Lake to be Eastern Conference champions?
Of course, once the Sounders bring in Tagoe, Forlan, Xavi and Dani Alves this afternoon the playoffs will be a mere formality.
