Seattle Sounders At FC Dallas - Gamethread

Hyndman's 4-1-4-1 faces Sigi Schmid without his Arrow as the Seattle Sounders travel to face FC Dallas

Sigi Schmid and his Seattle Sounders have not won in Texas yet. Not against the Houston Dynamo, nor against Saturday night's opponent FC Dallas. It isn't that the sample size is huge, but as the season progresses it becomes more clear that the Toros and Sounders are likely to face off in the MLS Cup Playoffs, and if confidence matters getting a win during the regular season will help towards that. Dallas will have a weakened defense as George John is sitting out due to an Ejection in his last MLS match.

Facing the make-shift backline is the likely continuation of the Mike Fucito & Fredy Montero pairing up top. While that pairing didn't score when these two sides last faced off, it did create chances against the full strength defense. The Sounders created more chances (12 to 6 by PowerStats101) and more opportunities (43 to 15). The small-small worked, in everything but the scoreline. The key will be conversion. Last time conversion was limited not just by Kevin Hartman's 4 saves, but also by the 6 blocks from his outfield players. But all signs in that last match were that if Seattle played every game like that they would win a lot more than they lose. Tonight should follow that rule, and not be another exception of playing well but losing.

The game is on KONG at 6PM, but with NO RADIO due to the Seahawks pre-season game. Arlo White has the call.

Fernandez makes a ton of sense

Seattle has 3 starting quality wide mids right now. Neagle can’t play at Monterrey. Rosales didn’t start against Comunicaciones. So why play Alvaro 3 straight?

Ok, not really a stunner

This would be a tactical switch to put a more physical man against Shea. Also Scott is less likely to get forward.

Watching a stream with FCD commentary

and I must admit they don’t seem like total homers, have been pretty fair especially to not excuse FCD fouls.

by olorcain on Aug 20, 2011 6:55 PM PDT reply actions

Agreed. They seem interested in telling the truth.

The Hernandez foul on Mauro was funny. On the replay: “And that, is definitely a foul.”

I was about to post the same thing

They don’t have the “flair” of Arlo, but they share his honesty and manage to avoid stupid sports cliches or low-brow attempts to stereotype players they don’t know (i.e. “Montero is lazy” type stuff).

I really don’t mind listening to them.

FCD is outshooting us

But their shots, intuitively, seem “low percentage” in nature (i.e. power shots from far away).

I know, earlier in the season, there was that discussion of how shots vs. shots-on-goal work at correlating to goals (with sog seemingly less useful as a predictor).

I wonder if, like was done a few weeks ago for passing accuracy in the final third, shots could be labeled by the zone they are taken in and if teams who have more shots in a given zone (intuitively, shots taken closer to the goal itself) have a tendency to score more goals-per-shots.

Keller made up for a poor punch out save, with an awesome reaction recovery save on his part to save the win.

save of the week

Glad we held on, not allowing dallas to score at home should help boost the defenses confidence.

I say we talk to the Puma's keeper.

At least until we secure something better.

Hey..

once he learns the position and develops his natural goalkeeping instincts, he’ll be great.

Dear god that was intense.

Is now the time to point out

That had we won our season opener we’d be leading in the race for the SS?

by magistermilitum on Aug 20, 2011 8:11 PM PDT reply actions

Well, that was an intense game.

I hope both teams are blushing, since they were whistled at more often than a coed at a construction site. But we got the result we wanted, so GO EARTHQUAKES!

Thoughts on that San Jose red card?

I think Donovan should be suspended a game for embellishment.

Yes

Very light touch on Donovan’s knee. The guy was trying to avoid landing on him. Hated the announcer commentary on it as well

by Dizzo on Aug 20, 2011 9:29 PM PDT up reply actions

can any other team

Claim to be undefeated on the road vs. The western conference? I know we still have vancover and chivas left, but that’s pretty impressive.
