Seattle Sounders at CF Monterrey Rayados - Gamethread

Nate Jaqua and Sigi Schmid hope the CCL can spark a return to form for the big man.

The Seattle Sounders are in a packed schedule with three games, in three tournaments, in two countries, in three stadiums in just eight short days. With another game of poor weather (Forecast for 96 degrees and thunderstorms), Sigi Schmid seems likely to put forward a cynical lineup gunning for a 1-0 or 1-1 match. Last year a reserve laden lineup actually challenged CF Monterrey, but they have their best two forwards returning to health and both Humberto Suazo and Aldo de Nigris are likely to play with at least one starting.

Coach Victor Vucetich of the Rayados will have the use of one of his key defensive additions as Darvin Chavez is out for his next league match, but like Schmid will have a mix of reserves and starters on the pitch. The starting quality men are the best in the region, even when just returning to play from injury and this is likely to be the match where they do so. Monterrey will not need to be cynical, they are flat out good, and when healthy should challenge for another league title (two in last two years) and a return to the Finals of the CONCACAF Champions League. Tonight's game is not a must win for either side, but the one that takes three points is in complete control of Group D and would only need to draw the remaining four matches to advance to the knockout rounds.

The game is on Fox Soccer at 5PM and there is no radio.

Lineup

This was the right choice, IMO. We simply don’t need this game to still do well in this competition, so saving players is the right choice. Who knows, something great could even come of this game on a set piece or penalty – or -god forbid – we actually regain confidence in Jacqua if he has a nice game. If our defense holds up and Evans and Alonso come up big, I think this game should be pretty competitive.

by RalfZakuani on Aug 23, 2011 4:07 PM PDT reply actions

So that prediction looks pretty good right now

Not sure we regained much confidence in Jaqua, however. Noonan, though…

by Nevtelen on Aug 23, 2011 10:48 PM PDT up reply actions

and

I didnt even know Alonso wasnt starting when I made this prediction. I even underestimated the best of what could come though – our goal came from free play.

Are there any studies/articles...

That demonstrate any type of correlation between two games in a week and decreased performance? I feel like it’s just a piece of coaching collective wisdom that is widely accepted with no evidence.

These are world class athletes—90 minutes on 3 days recovery seems absolutely reasonable.

Fwiw, this is just curiousity and not any kind of criticism about tonights lineup

by ClosetCoug on Aug 23, 2011 4:19 PM PDT reply actions

I think you can just talk to the players

and they’ll tell you, they hit a wall faster on 3 days’ rest than on 6 or 7. They often have sore muscles left over as well (second hand from a physio buddy of mine that works with the players)

by MicahRowe18 on Aug 23, 2011 5:31 PM PDT via mobile reply actions   1 recs

I know people get sick of complaining about players...

But could a Levesque supporter please tell me what he brings to the table. I’m pretty biased against this guy but it seems like every time he touches the ball he does something bad either technically or strategically.

I’m not just complaining. I really want to know what he does well and how he keeps getting in the game. Point out something so I can not dislike him so much, please. I really don’t want to dislike the guy as much as I do. I’m just out of ideas.

by zeeehjee on Aug 23, 2011 5:31 PM PDT reply actions

Levesque does nothing spectacularly well

but he does everything decently. He is definitely not a starter and shouldn’t be one. Here he’s a veteran who can fill in reasonably well when we need someone to play while others rest.
Like others have said, he brings heart and is like Le Toux in that he is a high work rate player.

by majora999 on Aug 23, 2011 5:39 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

What in the world does he do well???

His first touch makes it seem like he’s smuggling bricks in his boots, his vision is comperable, if not poorer, than a blind man’s, and I can’t even comment about hisshooting touch because I’ve literally never seen him attempt a shot from outside 15 yards in the game. He runs hard, and from all indications is a nice guy, but saying he does one thing decently, let alone everything, is a gross, misguided statement.

by Sounders4life on Aug 23, 2011 5:54 PM PDT up reply actions

His positioning is decent

his touch is probably league average.

Not that anybody will see this, but:

It turns out that was a correct no-call by the referee. I went back and looked at the tape and, though I can’t see who it was, a Sounder had been carried over the goal line by his momentum and hadn’t yet returned. By law, that defender is considered to be on the goal line for offside purposes…at that instant, then, Boss was the second-to-last defender (the man off the pitch was the last), and the attacker was onside. Very shrewd refereeing to notice that and wave the AR’s flag down. Sorry for the crap I yelled at the time :p

It was the one where I recouped the cost of my ST’s by selling the tickets to that match.

And the one that looked decent to me until I left for work at halftime.

This is why this one has a different feel to me.

I hope I’m right, but last year, I did have that feeling that the second Suazo went out there, things would change. Then he played like 20 minutes and destroyed us. This year they don’t have another guy who can come off the subs bench in a game like this (not high priority) and do the same.

Meanwhile, our bench has three or four guys who could do add a lot to what we have out there, that doesn’t look all that bad (other than a couple iffy defensive moments).

You do all the work for us, Honey Badger, and we'll just eat whatever you find.

First MLS reserve team to beat a Mexican FIRST team

That was pretty much Monterrey’s first team, right?

by LordIceman on Aug 23, 2011 7:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes.

They started Chupete y de Negris!

You do all the work for us, Honey Badger, and we'll just eat whatever you find.

Via @TheChampions:
1st ever CCL loss for Monterrey in 14 all-time CCL games: 10 wins, 3 draws, 1 loss (24 GF, 9 GA).

Nice!!

This win is even sweeter, if that’s possible.

by Nevtelen on Aug 23, 2011 11:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Huge step towards qualification

If we get wins against Herediano and Comunicaciones, the other game with Monterrey with Monterrey will be irrelevant.

by CarlosT on Aug 23, 2011 7:01 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

And Monterrey beat Herediano 5-0?

Not to overlook them, but we should be able to beat Herediano. Also, we theoretically will be fielding a stronger XI than we did tonight.

by wyte_lightning on Aug 23, 2011 7:06 PM PDT up reply actions

If that happens, we could be fighting to win the group

But qualification would be almost certainly guaranteed.

by CarlosT on Aug 23, 2011 7:07 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Winning those two games will give Sigi more flexibility with lineups

It would be nice to be able to rest a bunch of starters depending on where we are in the SS race and there is the USOC Final to think of as well.

by sdcoug09 on Aug 23, 2011 7:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Not really,

I guess my point, two wins against Herediano would essentially make the last two group games pointless for anything other than seeding purposes. Instead of needing to field at first team or 1b team because of must win situations in order to advance out of group play, we can stick with this line up and and focus on SS race and USOC.

by sdcoug09 on Aug 24, 2011 5:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Hold up, are you talking about the game against the team we beat on the road?

I think we can handle them. ;-)

Yeah, but if we put in a performance like tonight vs a team in the club world cup

we’d end up with a few tons of allocation money off of international transfers and no defenders. And no Flaco. Also, we’d start a trend for teams to play a 6-4-0 counter-attacking formation.

I hope a couple of my kids down the game flipped through, realized that's the game I was talking about, and watched...

because I have never been as proud of our guys as tonight. What an effort.

kind of like the bullfighter seeing how close he can get to the horns and not get gored. That one might have ripped his shirt.

can the Sounders..

sit 4 of their 5 most dangerous offensive players and still win? Strangely, yes. Gutsy job, guys, and a great win.

Is it just me...

Or was tonight’s officiating the best we’ve ever seen in a Concacaf game?

Did the guy’s check not come in or what? Consistency, competency, fair card distribution and no PKs. Was the game in Europe tonight?

by silver00 on Aug 23, 2011 7:32 PM PDT reply actions

Ok Oshan

Want to deny me my “global win of epic proportions?” :) We just beast Suazo/De Negris with full Jaqnoonvesque. Oh yeah, and El F’in Flaco. I am now worried about keeping Montero, Rosales and Flaco through the off season. The EPL and EU clearly are watching MLS (John anyone?) and you wanna tell me they did not see that clinical finish from the Uruguayan nat team member?

You said we missed out on that chance before the game started. So I think we’re even.
