Seattle Sounders 2 : San Francisco FC 0 - Statistics, Quotes

Watching a game from within the GA, and particularly this game, sometimes you can miss how dominant the Seattle Sounders were when they beat San Francisco FC of Panama in the CONCACAF Champions League on Wednesday night. Though the two-leg tie required extra time, and the score was only 2-nil, Seattle clearly dominated. There were more Sounders shots blocked than SFFC managed to even take (9 to 8). The Sounders won more duels, possessed the ball more and passed better. Statistically this wasn't a contest.

If you are looking for a match that shows just how good the team can be this may be it. The team pushed the ball forward quickly, and most of the mistakes in passing were due to over aggression and trying to create in new ways. Sigi, Mauro Rosales and Nate Jaqua all mention that nature of play. Should the team have had more goals? Probably, but as Alvaro Fernandez says;

"I was getting a little bit disillusioned with one shot outside the box and then two headers, but good thing about soccer is it gives those opportunities back to you."

In the end Seattle won - it took them longer than they wanted, it wasn't as pretty as it could have been, but they move on and can push towards that elusive regional championship. The Sounders have a packaged recap with highlights.

Sounders FC vs. San Francisco FC - Postgame Quotes

Sigi Schmid - Sounders FC Head Coach

(General comments...) "Wish we could have ended the game about 45 minutes earlier. I thought we had enough chances to finish the game. Sometimes when the luck has turned against you like with us over the last few games, sometimes it seems you have to grind out a victory. You have to work really hard at the victory and that was the case for us today. I think we were the better team over the 120 minutes. They had a couple chances. A big save by Kasey early. Probably one of the turning points of the game. Then we had to grind it out. We had chances. Their goalkeeper came up with some saves. We mishit a few. In the end, we ended up getting the victory, so we're happy about that."

(On first goal...) "He got one last year when we played down in El Salvador and he scored a big header for us today to get us on the board. We needed that goal. He's a player who's good in the air. A lot of times when we're building on the right, we're looking to get him in at the back post because Rosales is a good crosser and he's a good header. At times we try to play a little more right-handed than left-handed as a result of that. It was a good goal."

(On not converting opportunities...) "It was frustrating. It was probably most frustrating when we were trying to sub for Erik Friberg who had got hurt and for some reason that got lost in translation somewhere. That was probably more frustrating. Sometimes when you're coming off a series of games where you haven't gotten the result, it seems like that win that gets you back over the hump is one of those that you grind it out. It isn't necessarily a thing of beauty, even though we created a lot of chances, so there was a bit of frustration there. Our character showed through at the end."

(On Mauro Rosales...) "He definitely knows how to play in a wing channel. He's a good crosser and picks people out. He's busy and he's active. We don't want him to defend sometimes as much as he has to defend. He's more than willing to defend in the attacking part of the field and put pressure on the opponent, which is something that helps us in terms of trying to win the ball back and regain possession. He's been a great addition since he plays with such passion and energy."

(On CONCACAF...) "I just keep wondering why our group is so tough. Dallas was a play-in and every team is tough at this point, but we're back in against Monterrey and we're back in against the team from Guatemala, Communicaciones. And then we play Herediano from Costa Rica. It's a tough group but it's important. Our players felt disappointed with our performance last year overall. We Felt we deserved a bit more. We felt we were unlucky with red card in Costa Rica and we thought we had done enough in Marathon to get some points. We were up 2-1 in Monterrey. So we had some things go against us. It's great to have a chance, as Flaco said, those chances come again and we have a chance to go at it again."

(On player rotation...) "Zach was ready to play. With Ianni and Parke, we were deciding between the two. We felt they had put in a lot of minutes and one of them needed to sit. We felt that Parke was a little more recovered than Patrick was so that was the reason. We wanted to get a fresh center back in there."

(On Pat Noonan getting the start...) "Noonan up top. Roger looked tired to me so that's why we didn't include him in the 18 tonight. Noonan is a player who combines well. We felt it was going to be a game where they were going to play more defensive and keep guys back. We wanted a player in there like Noonan who knows how to find little spaces and combine well rather than going with speed or some other attribute."

(On Pat Noonan's play...) "I thought he played well. His 60 minutes were good. He held the ball for us well and he allowed us to push up as well."

(On next game...) "We'll look how people are and how they recover. We'll travel with 20 because sometimes you don't know until the next day if someone comes up with kink or a bruise so we don't have to fly someone in last minute. We feel good about our fitness level. We're going into another warm climate. The good thing is Kansas City had to play tonight as well and they ended up playing a man down in the second half. They didn't get overtime minutes, but it is what it was. That's why I wish we'd finished it 45 minutes earlier, but it is what it is and we'll deal with it."

Nate Jaqua - Sounders FC Forward

(On having time on goal scoring chance...) "Maybe a little more time than you want but I took a touch to get it down and when they came across. I tried to roof it over them and put it in the back of the net. It was nice to see it go in."

(On missed chance earlier in match...) "You want to make up for that. That was one I should have put away. When you get in there and get one a little bit early and aren't quite in the rhythm of the game. I think I got into the rhythm of the game a bit more as it wore on. It was nice to make up for that."

(On shot discrepancy...) "I think we were confident. We created a lot of things and knew if we kept plugging away that they were getting a little bit tired and that we were getting opportunities as the game wore on and that we'd get more in overtime. It felt like that happened. We kept pushing and got good chances and finally got the one."

Mauro Rosales - Sounders FC Midfielder

(On Seattle finally scoring a goal when Alvaro Fernandez scored in the 41st minute...)"It was very important to score in the first half, to have the [ability] in the second half to play a little more quiet, but we didn't. We were doing all the hard work to try to get the goal and it was in the 110th minute. It was [a] pity that we couldn't score before 90. We had to run double but that's okay. After the two games that we had, it's good to have some motivation like we did today. We go to the next game trying to keep our hard work."

(On how important it was to get out and play the way they did...)"I think it was very important because we know we have a good team, we have been doing very good job in the last five games but after we lost (some games recently), we lost some confidence also. We have to get (that confidence) again. Today was a very important game. It's not just for us but for the club and for the MLS too."

Alvaro Fernandez - Sounders FC Forward (via translator)

(On goal after missed opportunities...) "I was getting a little bit disillusioned with one shot outside the box and then two headers, but good thing about soccer is it gives those opportunities back to you."

Leonardo Pipino - San Francisco FC Head Coach

(General comments...) "The feeling of losing always brings sadness, especially in an important tournament like this. But coming from a league that isn't well known it's good to come here and play at the same level with a great team like the Seattle Sounders that play in a league that is more well known."

(On goalie...) "He had a great performance. We don't always want the goalkeeper to be the star of the team but he had a very lucky night and was able to keep the game going all the way to the extra time."

(On team strategy...) "We had the idea to come and dominate the match. To play in the other field and keep the ball in our possession. Unfortunately, we had a rival on the other side that prevented us from doing that. In the first half, there was a chunk of time where we had good passes."

(On officiating...) "It was acceptable within the normal progression of the game. Maybe there were mistakes for one team or the other, but I don't have anything to complain about."

(On Sounders fan support...) "They have an admirable number of people who follow the team and support the team. I salute the fans of the Sounders."

We will be at a little bit of a disadvantage going into group stage with Alonso sitting out the 1st match and 5 others on 1 card (Riley, Fernandez, Rosales, Friberg, Keller) thanks to the horrendous refereeing.

Yeah. To a certain extent the Ozzie thing will depend on the draw. I don’t expect our frontline starters to play every game and Carrasco is a fairly decent replacement so it wouldn’t have surprised me regardless to see him start. I guess I’m saying if we play in Mexico our first game, it’s pretty likely we wouldn’t be pulling that out Ozzie or not, so it hurts less. Not a good thing, but we have depth for a reason.

Boo! Tomorrow AM. I want all things now!

by Perrinbar on Aug 4, 2011 12:00 PM PDT up reply actions

We already have the draw for the first two games

I’m presuming that Costa Rican teams tend to be better than Guatemalan teams, and we know Monterrey is the best team of the three. So ranking the games from easiest to hardest, I’m guessing is roughly like this:

vs. Comunicaciones
vs. Herediano
at Comunicaciones
vs. Monterrey
at Herediano
at Monterrey

Our first game is vs. Com. and our second is at Monterrey. I really, really, really want to be the first MLS team to win in Mexico, so I’m glad Ozzie’s going to be there for that game. It’s possible that Comunicaciones is no better than a bottom-of-the-table MLS team, so if you think about it as resting Ozzie for a game against TFC at home, that wouldn’t terribly worry me.

If we can win our first two games, or at least get four points out of the deal, that’d be a brilliant start to group play. As we found out last year, dropping points early in the group can make it nearly impossible to pull back.

"a match that shows just how good the team can be?"

35 shots and 2 goals? If I hear one more “it was just unfortunate, their goalie was great, etc.,” I am going to puke (and not just from drinking like normally happens). I am ecstatic that we are through to the group stage, but we were one Fernandez header away from elimination in normal time on 28 shots. My god we need a finisher….

by Brougham Hooligan on Aug 4, 2011 12:03 PM PDT reply actions   1 recs

Their goalie was pretty good / lucky I thought … puking yet??? :) But still with 14 shots on frame you’d hope we’d get three goals out of that. I feel like we’ve seen this pattern a few times now; we look pretty disjointed for a couple of weeks and lose, we start looking good and get a ton of shots but few goals (see the first Houston game from early in the year), then we start winning again.

by lefthand on Aug 4, 2011 12:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Sure, we could use another finisher

So could everyone else in the league. And out of all the players in the league who would you want? Flaco and Montero are only being beaten in goals scored by 8 players. Montero has the second highest number of shots on goal in the league and the most shots taken. Flaco turns 40% of his on goal shots into goals which is better then 2 of the 8 players with more goals then him. Only 4 players ahead of Montero and Flaco finish 50% or more of their shots on goal. Those players being Donovan (58%), Henry (52%), Davies (57%), and Hassli (50%).

by Derek R on Aug 4, 2011 1:18 PM PDT up reply actions

I sure if you remove PKs

Diveies’ (sorry Davies’) numbers would go down. Donovan and Henry may be affected by that too.

by MurrayD on Aug 4, 2011 1:24 PM PDT up reply actions

You'd also have to remove

one (or more? can’t recall) of Fernandez’s goals. Also, there was Montero’s saved PK in LA.

by agtk on Aug 4, 2011 4:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Also,

We are one of four teams to have 2+ players with 6 goals or more to their name (others being NY, Vancouver, and Chivas)

by Derek R on Aug 4, 2011 1:24 PM PDT up reply actions

We are playing quite well for the MLS

right behind LA and FCD. But we are in the “Champions” league, not the “good enough” for MLS league. I actually think Montero is doing his job quite well—his freekicks are awesome, he regularly draws double and triple marks, and he is starting to link up with with the midfield in transition. The problem is that he is only one. I about fainted when they started Noonan yesterday. To me, bar none, Fucito should be the no. 2 striker with no OBW. My only hope is that the FO has something up their sleeve as we almost have to go internationally to get what we need up front. We should at least get a loan of a striker for the rest of the season.

by Brougham Hooligan on Aug 4, 2011 1:42 PM PDT up reply actions

The fact that Noonan gets the start over Fucito

I think makes perfectly clear that Fucito is most definitely in Sigi’s doghouse.

Confused as to what your point is

Are you saying we do not need another striker because everyone else needs one too?

“Out of all the players in the league, who would you want?”
Well, for starters I want someone not in the MLS.

SSFC | What I do for fun: Sometimes-Interesting

by ABTsportsline on Aug 5, 2011 9:31 AM PDT up reply actions

My point was

that within the constraints of our league, the guys we have up top are quite good.

Better strikers not in the MLS are most likely not in the MLS for a reason. Especially when you have teams like Seattle with the money, desire, and space for such strikers.

by Derek R on Aug 5, 2011 11:08 AM PDT up reply actions

Guess I disagree then

Our wingers are fabulous – best in the league! But up top? I’d say almost every other team’s strike tandem is better than ours.

We have an open DP spot. Money shouldn’t be an issue, and clearly we shouldn’t be looking within MLS to find that striker. Of course the best strikers aren’t in the MLS for a reason – but who says we need to target the best ones in the world? I just want an upgrade to Levesque and Jaqua. ;-)

SSFC | What I do for fun: Sometimes-Interesting

by ABTsportsline on Aug 5, 2011 11:16 AM PDT up reply actions

And now we are back to my original question

Who would you want? How many players out there are worth DP money and wanting to play in the MLS?

by Derek R on Aug 5, 2011 1:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Have we found our keeper for 2012?

That keeper was like Spiderman! He looks far better than Boss.

Serious question – why not scout that team? Many of their players (despite the flopping) were quite good. You’d have to think a move to MLS would be an upgrade for most of them.

Aug 16 conflict

I’m curious about our group stage opener on Aug 16, the M’s play the same night. I know that’s been a non-starter in the past. We can’t move the game to starfire because of CCL rules. Are the M’s going to play at Cheney?? Did the city / police just figure that the likely attendance between both games will still be lower than a seahawks game???

by lefthand on Aug 4, 2011 12:22 PM PDT reply actions

Probably the latter

I doubt that game will attract much more than the 20K we got last night and the last Mariners’ Tuesday home game had about 22K. There could be a lower combined attendance than the Sounders’ NYRB home game this year.

by ubelmann on Aug 4, 2011 12:31 PM PDT up reply actions

It definitely concerns me

I’ve got a co-rec game that night…

by Targaff on Aug 4, 2011 12:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Mariners game is at 7:10

I really hope the Sounders game is not at 5. I could not make it. Who could go to a 5pm game on a wedensday? I guess they assume most people dont have jobs?

Ticketmaster has it at 5 PM. That timing would 20 plus thousand celebrating Sounders fans in the streets ten minutes before the M’s game starts. A 6 PM start would reduce the overlap, enhancing public safety and making it easier for 9 to 5ers to make it to the match.

by look4wrd on Aug 4, 2011 1:32 PM PDT up reply actions

But not anymore, apparently

Now they’ve changed the time on the Sounders website to TBD. I also saw it listed as 5pm at that link and thought that was pretty ridiculous!

by Sevenless on Aug 4, 2011 2:34 PM PDT up reply actions

All 7's

The link says 7PM now. Also the email just sent out from the team says 7PM.

by lefthand on Aug 4, 2011 5:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Another Option

would be to move the game to Thursday when the M’s don’t play but I can’t see us doing that since we’d only have one day rest before flying into Dallas.

by lefthand on Aug 4, 2011 3:22 PM PDT up reply actions

I guess it was better than telling to truth.

We had the idea to come here and waste as much time as we could. That way we could tie 0-0 or get to a shootout.

by MurrayD on Aug 4, 2011 1:32 PM PDT up reply actions

You picked the wrong quote to carp on. Dave already highlighted the egregious one
It was acceptable within the normal progression of the game. Maybe there were mistakes for one team or the other, but I don’t have anything to complain about.

How great was Montero last night?

Seriously, kid was on fire in his creative/Trequarista role. He even had some great hold-up play, though that’s probably because the SFFC defenders were tiny.

If he plays like that the rest of the season, I don’t care if he doesn’t notch another goal.

It's why in some ways Seattle is more like a 4-2-3-1 than a 4-4-2

Yellow cards are significant, yes?

Am I correct in remembering that yellows from the preliminary round count in our group stage accumulation? Taking four, especially that particularly ludicrous substitution/injury debacle, might be bothersome later. Maybe create some forced rotation.
