Seattle Sounders At Sporting KC - Gamethread

Seattle at Kansas City Hopeful Lineups, Statistics and Broadcast Info

This is not a trap game. This is a match where the Seattle Sounders are purely an underdog, not just due to MLS parity, but because Sporting Kansas City is a decent team that is great at home. Pile on a run of travel, fixture congestion and a few minor injuries and this game becomes one of those where Seattle may just be happy with a point. The match also features two of the most powerful offenses in Major League Soccer. The SporKCs average 1.41 goals per game (good for 3rd) and the Sounders slightly better at 1.43 (good for 2nd).

KC has recently added a few talents, including Brazilian Designated player Jefferson to compliment previous signing Mexican DP Omar Bravo. In addition to two DPs gracing the beautiful LIVESTRONG Sporting Park they have CJ Sapong who is a Rookie of the Year candidate, All-Star Matt Besler and twitter fave Kei Kamara. Rapidly this Midwestern team has built itself back from the struggles since 2004 both on the field and through strong connections with the community. Most notable of those connections is their membership program. It isn't Democracy in Sports, but the tangible benefits of membership are significant. If there is an example of what the future of the League can be outside of Cascadia it is Sporting KC and it is strong.

The game is KONG 6/16/106 and 97.3FM with Arlo White on the call at 5:30 PM Pacific

by agtk on Aug 6, 2011 4:51 PM PDT up reply actions

While Scott was serviceable Wednesday...

His positioning and passing just aren’t up to the task. In a game where we’d like to see the full/wingbacks get help, they won’t see much if the centerbacks are having trouble with their own spacing.

Keller is going to have a lot of work unless Carrasco/Alonso put in a dominant performance.

Long-ball, header . . .

to the corner with nobody running onto it was what i saw. I’m not saying he should be our top option, just that he’s doing better now than a month ago.

by sammysounder on Aug 6, 2011 5:57 PM PDT up reply actions

but then that's just the problem...

…and it’s much the same problem that Jaqua has. Flick-ons are a flashy means of turning the ball over if you lack awareness of your teammates and the ability to direct the ball in their path. It’s the team skill that is most lacking in the absence of Nkufo.

It's not like there's a track between the field and the seats at CenturyLink

Although he hasn't tallied a goal in MLS games

His shots seems to be incredibly well placed, with keepers making some quality saves. He also doesnt seem to be afraid to put shots on frame. I think we kinda need someone out there up front who just constantly is a nuisance to the back line.

If we think of the team as a puzzle, I just think Fucito’s not fitting quite right at the moment. He’s a totally sexy puzzle piece, but might belong to a different puzzle.

by Mugen Power on Aug 6, 2011 6:28 PM PDT reply actions

Not usually one to complain about Montero

He is not doing much so far. He needs to help Roger and Mauro when they have the ball by moving around and getting open. He seems to be just standing there and watching them lose their dribble to the defender. He needs to give them options to get rid of the ball.

He’s probably gassed after playing nearly 120 minutes Wednesday which begs the question how long until Fucito comes in for him. Fucito has a history with KC. I’d love to see that continue tonight.

See, the thing is

And I hate to say yhis, but while it was a terrible tackle, there clearly wasn’t that much contact, especially since he was grounded by the time he got to Noonan. So it’s all very well our criticising Bravo for embellishing, but, well, I wouldn’t be doing it too loudly.

Two feet into the ankle deserves suspension

And if the shit-ass referees in this federation don’t call it unless there’s play-acting, then I am all for embellishment.

Right

Let me know when you find the bit where i said it wasn’t a red card? Protip: you’ll be looking a long time.

You don’t see how my responses are relevant?

by Aaron Campeau on Aug 6, 2011 7:06 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

Noonan's reaction

Was the reaction of the sort of a player who had been caught by a flying tackle, not a player who got clipped in the ankle by a badly timed flying tackle.

by Targaff on Aug 6, 2011 7:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Except by the time it actually got to him

It wasn’t. Keep telling yourself it was, though, if it helps feed your outrage.

by Targaff on Aug 6, 2011 7:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Wait, what?

You’re suggesting Noonan should have kept his feet on the ground on that? Bravo wasn’t going as hard as, say, Mullan went into Zakuani, but he went into Noonan’s ankles in such a way that there was no way Noonan was going to keep his feet without getting injured.

All of which doesn’t excuse in any way Bravo going and putting his finger in Noonan’s face. That in and of itself is yellow card unsportsmanlike conduct.

by ubelmann on Aug 6, 2011 7:02 PM PDT up reply actions

See above for most of the response, but I’m sure Bravo will get his for his subsequent idiocy, and rightfully so. As for the tackle, it was clearly worthy of a red card, but there wasn’t a great deal of contact and the way Noonan went down you’d think he’d been eviscerated.

by Targaff on Aug 6, 2011 7:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Disagree on your interpretation of Noonan's fall

Bravo went into his ankles and he didn’t have anywhere to go. He wasn’t grabbing his face or anything like that.

And at any rate, my initial comment was simply that in no way should Bravo have gotten that close to Noonan in the first place. The referee is asking for a mass brawl by letting a red-carded player touch the player that he fouled.

Even before the Bravo tackle

It seemed as though there were a lot of two-footed tackles out of SKC. Not red-card worthy challenges, because they weren’t into a player, but you don’t see a lot of two-footed tackles in general, it seems.

That’s extremely frustrating to see. If it is a foul for a handball it is a yellow card. There’s no wiggle room there.

Worse than that, he saw and signaled the hand ball. He pointed to his arm. Just didn’t bother saying “Hey, give him a card for that.”

Not sure I agree he's always hot or cold

But I would say that he seems to be at that level where he can be really effective off the bench (against tired legs) and less impressive when he starts the game. Hopefully he continues to up his game.

Man, that was insane. Omar Bravo thanks for that stupid, stupid tackle. Combine that with Sassano being hurt and all of sudden KC is playing with 9 at the end. And that’s when we strike! I think KC would like to never go to extra time against us ever again. WOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Loved Arlo asking when will KC learn to play a full 90 minutes against Seattle?

by James Bray on Aug 6, 2011 7:33 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

Realistically, Rosales

Just for more minutes played, and the assist.

by Dustin Titus on Aug 6, 2011 7:35 PM PDT up reply actions

I was surprised that Rosales didn't get subbed out

I’ve got to believe part of it was Mauro being the best attacking player among the starters and the other part being Levesque’s poor play.

We're KC's "boogie team"

Peter Vermes still has 0 points against Seattle. The way we feel about LA, they must feel about us. I love that we regularly steal a victory from them in the last moments of the game. How evil of us.
