Seattle Sounders v Real Salt Lake - Gamethread
For Real Salt Lake the trip to Seattle will always remind them of their greatest win in history. Luckily for Seattle Sounders fans, it had nothing to do with the team in Rave Green. Besides that neutral pitch win, RSL has struggled with things Seattle with the Sounders earning 8 points in 5 previous meetings. Complicating the Utah Royals desire to break into the Western Conference Promised Land rather than a Wild Card slot is their road heavy end of season schedule including this match. By design the men of Salt Lake prevent the opposing team from taking many shots, and play a patient game with a compact diamond 4-4-2. Fabian Espindola and Alvaro Saborio have some speed and are threats, but they are forwards defined more by their support than by themselves. Each have 7 goals on the season. It will be the central midfielders that define the game tomorrow, with Luis Gil likely as the #10 and Kyle Beckerman as the holding mid.
Seattle should have control of the width. Alvaro Fernandez and Mauro Rosales tend to play wider than their opposing mids, as well as higher. They are also both more technical players on the ball, and Rosales is faster than Salt Lake's left side. With speedy Mike Fucito and ball-magician Fredy Montero up top Seattle should be able to threaten Nick Rimando and the Salt Lake goal. Seattle scores two goals a game, and with 36,000 in the stands in amazing weather this could be another day of free haircuts. A win would push the Sounders past their previous MLS high, with many games to spare no matter how you count them.
The game is on KING5 and 97.3FM with Arlo White on the call at 1PM

After the layoff, I think the Sounders come out a little rusty
and don’t look good in the first 20 mins or so. I hope we don’t give up a goal during that time. After that, I’d bet the team will start to look better and will give RSL a good match. I think this ends either 0-0 or 1-0 in someone’s favor (hopefully ours).
Fun stat from the RSL Twitter feed
They’ve never played a day game on turf. They’re 2-11-7 all time on turf with the only wins coming over New England.

Can the MLS step up and just ban that guy for a month for these repeated dives?
You do all the work for us, Honey Badger, and we'll just eat whatever you find.
Seriously
I feel they should increase the fine/suspension if it has a direct impact on the game (PK or ejection). Also being his second offense this season he should be in some serious trouble for this time. I hope the MLS doesn’t balk at the chance to set a precedent.
Unofficial Sounder Fan Club President - New Mexico Division
From MLS website:
“Jhon Kennedy Hurtado (Seattle Sounders FC) is shown the red card for a bad foul.”
I guess that is what “a bad foul” looks like.
by magistermilitum on Sep 10, 2011 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions
I have this honest belief that you could end that crap entirely by...
a) halftime review and reversal, and
b) doubling the consequence that was drawn from the dive, or adding a yellow for a normal foul drawn, after the fact. If you get a 3 game ban for a red, a 6 game ban for a dive to draw a red would work.
You do all the work for us, Honey Badger, and we'll just eat whatever you find.
It has to be be solved after the fact in my mind.
It would get stupid out there if they started overly enforcing anything that could be a dive. We’d get eaten alive by that if only because we have lots of small quick guys.
No kidding.
I wish the refs could review the replays of the cards they issue at half. Saborio needs to get sent off for his BS.
by magistermilitum on Sep 10, 2011 1:59 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
Are we so sure that's a dive?
It’s suspicious, I’ll grant you, but if this were a courtroom I doubt I could claim it beyond a reasonable doubt.
I agree
I doubt there will be repercussions for Saborio. Its close enough that there might have been minimal contact.
The only way that's a straight red is if the ref thought that it was a malicious elbow
But there no way in hell it was.
by wyte_lightning on Sep 10, 2011 2:03 PM PDT up reply actions
Yea pretty much. It doesn't even vaguely look malicious.
I mean, Hurtado is already past him, with the ball, how could he have even intentionally gone for the face with an elbow short of just a wild swing back. Which itself would have made no sense. Ughhh.
Now with more pessimism!
Halftime straw poll:
— How many more total yellow cards?
— Will there still be 10 men per side at the end of the match?
4 more yellows
Two are given to the same person, resulting in a red.
I'd say 2 more yellows
and 10 per side at the end of the match is likely. I think the ref will be very shy about giving any more reds, refs don’t like giving multiple reds to one team. It’s the same oddity as PKs.
Now with more pessimism!

Can't control the ref no
But the league can certainly be stricter after the fact for simulation. Watching that on replay it’s clear that the only contact was hand to shoulder. As it stands now, the majority of the time it is worth it for players to simulate because there isn’t enough of a penalty if it fails. Too few refs call it.
That said, we defeated ourselves this game, the ref only made it easier to do.
10 on 10 with their keep staring into the sun...
…how were Ozzie and Montero not shelling him the whole second half?
Just got home from the match...
…and I was sitting up in 340 with a perfect view of the Hurtado phantom red card incident. There was absolutely no contact with Saborio’s face/head. It was a very well sold flop. Outrageous and disappointing. My only consolation, aside from the fact that it’s absolutely gorgeous out, and that makes it hard to feel too bad about anything for very long, is that I’m hoping this loss will help the team refocus on closing out the rest of the season strong with momentum rebuilding right on into the playoffs. Up the Sounders!!!
