Major Link Soccer - Reality Bites Edition

Reality came crashing in this weekend. The amazing August run by the Seattle Sounders ended with a 2-1 home loss to Real Salt Lake. All the Sounders luck looked spent as Kasey Keller made a 1 in a 1,000 error and the normally steady Mauro Rosales missed a penalty kick wide. The Sounders website has match highlights and photos.

Meanwhile, the other important league game also went against the Sounders. The Los Angeles Galaxy continued to show why they're top of the table with a 1-0 win over an improving Colorado Rapids team. The Galaxy now look firmly in control of the Supporter's Shield. Don't let the scoreline fool you. The Galaxy never looked in danger of losing the match and its doubtful they'll drop enough points to let the Sounders catch back up to them.

Tottenham Interested in Beckham: Reportedly the Tottenham Hotspurs want to sign David Beckham once his contract expires at the end of the year. Recently promoted Queen's Park Rangers are also reportedly interested in the services of David Beckham. A year or two ago this would have been a big blow to the marketing of MLS. However, the loss wouldn't sting so much with the addition of other former superstars like Robbie Keane and Thierry Henry. Personally, I would find it refreshing to move past the Beckham era for MLS. The league has grown past him.

More Sounders and MLS News after the jump:

Star-divide

Report from a Snowball in Hell: The New England Revolution defeat FC Dallas by a score of 2-0 off of goals by Shalrie Joseph and Rajko Lekic. The loss crushes the Supporter's Shield chances of FC Dallas and makes catching the Seattle Sounders a much more difficult task. Brek Shea was completely gassed and probably shouldn't have started the game. I suppose coach Schellas Hyndman's strategy of playing his starters until near collapse must have back-fired. And oh yeah, its damn hot down here and the artwork looks funny

Marquez Goes on Vacation: The Red Bulls nearly lost at home against the Vancouver Whitecaps. Let that sink in for a moment. The highest paid team in MLS was nearly defeated at home by the worst team in the West. Henry looked dangerous all night although the shots weren't falling for him. Even Bouna Coundoul stepped up and played a consistently good game. The player that looked like he was sitting on the beach with a Corona was Rafael Marquez. Shameful really. Especially considering the NYRB are about to make a big marketing push.

Pontius Injured: DC United striker/midfielder Chris Pontius suffered a fractured right tibia this weekend after a collision with Chivas USA's David Junior Lopes. DC United would go on to win the match 3-0 off of a Charlie Davies hat trick. It was an unfortunate injury as the 24-year old Pontius was getting hot and having a career season with DC United. No word yet on the recovery time, but it's quite possible he'll be out for the season.

Zips Thrash St. Louis: The Akron Zips absolutely destroyed the St. Louis Billikens this weekend. Freshman right-back, and Sounders Academy graduate, DeAndre Yedlin helped set up the first of four goals with a quick run down the right flank. The Zips under coach Caleb Porter now have an amazing 61-0-0 record when leading at the half.

Seattle University Kings of Overtime: In other college action the University of Washington and Seattle University battled to a 0-0 double overtime draw. It was Seattle University's third consecutive double overtime match. Talk about some tired soccer players.

Levesque Out and About: We've had some Roger Levesque sightings recently. The first one was easy as the formidfender had his giant banner hung over Temple Billards for a recent charity event. Levesque takes a bit more to spot in this other clip. He's the bearded guy helping to set-up the local paddle-board yoga class. Unfortunately, Roger will be harder to spot in the future now that he's tragically beardless. Although our own Jeremiah Oshan has taken up the facial hair cause.

I didn't make this connection before

but clearly this comically freakish loss is due to Levesque shaving the beard.

Also I forgot to look, but is Montero’s rat tail gone? That may be another missing element to our game.

Beckham is absurdly overpriced for what he provides at this point in his career.

Beckham is a great player, but simply not worth the asking price. The ultimate winner is probably the one who loses the upcoming bidding war between Tottenham and LA.

Going to be hard for NY to draw fans

when 2 out of 3 DPs aren’t playing. Can’t imagine Marquez will be back next year.

You will hear us on Brougham, you will hear us on Occidental, you will hear us on King. Our yachts are all around you, there is no escape.
