MLS Player Salaries: Sounders Added Players, Trimmed Payroll

Lamar Neagle continues to be one of the best bargains in all of MLS, as he's making below the league minimum. (Photo by Peter G. Aiken/Getty Images)

As they usually do twice a year, the MLS Players Union released salary data. As you'll see, there were a few surprises when it came to the Seattle Sounders.

Most notably, you'll notice that they managed to add two players -- Sammy Ochoa and Amadou Sanyang -- while also trimming their payroll. According to these numbers, they actually cut their guaranteed compensation by more than $65,000.

Most of that money was saved through Pat Noonan ($48,000), Nate Jaqua (almost $71,000) and O'Brian White ($47,500). Noonan's saving was not a huge surprise, as it was well known that he had re-signed at a discount. Jaqua's signing was a bit more of a surprise, as he had previously signed a new contract last year. It's hard to know what, exactly, this means, but it could very well mean that he was given an extension as players rarely just give back money they are owed. In White's case, this almost certainly had something to do with his giving back some kind of bonus that would have been achieved through playing time.

There were also a few players that were apparently given raises during the season. The most interesting of those is Servando Carrasco, who was apparently bumped up to a minimum salary player from one making an "apprentice" wage. Hard to argue with that since he is clearly playing far more significant minutes than the team probably thought he would be when he signed.

The only other player to receive a raise was Fredy Montero, who is getting $20,000 more in guaranteed compensation than he was getting at the start of the year. My best guess is that it probably has something to do with a performance bonus.

After the jump, we've attached a table of the current salaries, as well as the reported salaries as of May.

Difference between base salary and guaranteed comp?

Might be helpful for those that aren’t familiar with the difference.

One includes things like signing bonuses

Tetteh

Isn’t his salary paid by adidas (or the league?) and doesn’t go against our salary cap until he gets some significant first team playing time?

Yes, he is a generation adidas player

This is what the guys are actually being paid.

Noonan

Noonan’s salary is exactly half of what it was in 2010 ($96k). Makes me wonder if there actually was a pay cut. May be that the salary was halved because he was only signed for half a season.

Some interesting numbers

One of which is Taylor Graham’s salary. $60k seems like a lot for somebody who literally never plays, and yet someone like Levesque – who is the same age and has the same USL history – is making $18k less. Or Zach Scott making a little over $15k less. I don’t get it.

The CBA has some salary requirements based on years in the league

If I remember correctly Graham had a couple years playing in MLS before joining the USL Sounders. Scott and Levesque didn’t.

Levesque played in MLS

Thanks

Makes way more sense now. Graham looks like he had 4ish years in MLS prior to USL Sounders. Levesque only had two.

Ignoring CBA rules though, still seems weird.

One other figure I thought was odd

Neagle is still at the ‘apprentice’ wage, but Carrasco was moved up to league minimum?

Per MLSSoccer.com stats:
Neagle has 18 apps, Carrasco’s has 11.
Neagle has 682 minutes, Carrasco has 599.

I don’t know if maybe Carrasco had a slightly better agent to negotiate a raise for minutes played or performance or what, or if Neagle is under something different because he’s local and has history with the team… but if it truly is based on playing significantly more minutes than were expected, it seems like it should have been Neagle that got the bump, or both should have.

by chrisperry1983 on Sep 13, 2011 6:01 AM PDT reply actions

Carrasco played more early in the season

which probably gave him more leverage in asking for a higher contract. Neagle has played more late in the season, which leads to “we’ll take care of you in the offseason.”

I could see that

I do hope they take care of him in the offseason. Hopefully the slight cap increase will allow a little wiggle room.

by chrisperry1983 on Sep 13, 2011 7:22 AM PDT up reply actions

It could be a standard rookie contract clause

It could be that Carrasco just signed a standard rookie contract clause that gave him the bump based on playing time.

I'm on the Noonan train for the first time ever

I’d never thought I would say that, but the salary change has changed my mind. His salary now is right in line with what he provides the team in versatility, utility and veteran experience. He might actually be a good value. Zach Scott has definitely being playing above his salary level this season as well. I thought both would be cut this season, but I’m very happy to be wrong.

by Dizzo on Sep 13, 2011 12:15 PM PDT reply actions

After seeing his limited time in the RSL game

I have to agree. I thought he looked pretty sharp. I’ve been slowly converting, but the salary issue is now basically nil. Everyone hated on him for his salary, but now that it’s not the issue and he is seemingly healthy, I think we can all relax a bit.

I think some people got so into the habit of criticizing Noonan

that they’d complain even if he paid us to play. Not rational. He obviously provides more than, say, Mike Seamon, who’s now in the same salary ballpark.

Player value vs Playing time!

I would guess that Sigi isn’t concerned with salaries when it comes to playing time, all players are played based on the needs of the team. Some players have a little better value when it comes to pay vs playing time and production on the field but what will their future value to the team be when it comes to opportunities to acquire additional talent and/or players opportunities elsewhere will be the deciding factors of keeping a player or letting him go..

by Hattrick 10 on Sep 13, 2011 3:28 PM PDT reply actions

52 minutes

He played a total of 52 minutes in MLS for the Earthquakes, in four games. There may be some threshold how much you have to play for it to count as a year in the league. Graham playeed in 17 games (746 minutes) for Kansas City in 2004 and in 10 games (568 minutes) for New york in 2005. Plus a few games in 2003 and 2007 to make his total 34 games and 1659 minutes.

Interesting detail: his totals in MLS as a Sounder is on game in which he played for one minute. That was on 6/5/2010 in a home game against New England, subbed in for Gonzalez.

So I guess this makes Jaqua's sunk cost

more like a cruiser, rather than a battleship.

You will hear us on Brougham, you will hear us on Occidental, you will hear us on King. Our yachts are all around you, there is no escape.

maybe only a destroyer

That cost is really cheap for a player of his history

Miguel MontaƱo

He is on loan to Montreal Impact right? Are we still paying him or do we get that money back from Montreal?
I know we got him on loan from Quilmes, was he still a loan product from them or did he ever sign with Seattle?

His contract is still with Quilmes

Seattle is still responsible for the monies listed above though
