Seattle Sounders v DC United - Three Questions
If the Seattle Sounders have an East Coast rival it would be DC United. The origins are from the strong words that the two front offices made leading up to the 2009 US Open Cup Final. The interaction between the two blogs on the network have been nearly as vicious as the games on the pitch. Although the crew at Black and Red United have never stomped on my stomach. That might only be because we haven't met in real life.
And now those guys don't hate the Sounders anymore.
And finally, I also don't hate the Sounders anymore because I kind of love playing them. United is still undefeated at Qwest Field / CenturyLink. Bring it on.
Let's see why they think they will not lose this time.
SaH: United has one of the most diverse offenses in the League this season. Is tactical or a case of guys just coming up when they get a chance?
B&RU: You're right that different players have gotten hot at different times for United. Charlie Davies was on fire early in the year but faded away markedly, and then suddenly exploded for a hat trick against Chivas USA last week. Dwayne De Rosario was scoring at will when he first made the move south from New York, but his strike rate has now declined (although averaging a goal or more per game obviously wasn't really sustainable). So what you call diversity might actually just be a lack of consistency. Fortunately though, United has enough potent scorers that the team can afford to spread the goals around and make up for a cold streak here or there.
SaH: How will the offense be changed with the loss of Chris Pontius?
B&RU: On paper, the change is as simple as starting Santino Quaranta on the left wing and Josh Wolff as the withdrawn forward. Both players are capable starters, so in some situations, you might not even notice a dropoff. But Pontius has developed into one of the best players in the league at dribbling at defenders. Quaranta doesn't have that ability, nor Pontius' speed or shooting accuracy. But Quaranta is a better crosser, so you'll probably see more attempted service to Davies and Wolff, and Andy Najar will have to get more involved as well.
SaH: Bill Hamid is still growing into his role as a regular starter. What does he still need to learn?
B&RU: Hamid may have missed a bit of time due to minor injuries and a suspension, but he's still only given up one goal since July 2nd. He's always been a great shot stopper, but has improved significantly this season in his decision-making and positioning. If there's one thing that Hamid still needs to learn it's body control, as he's given away four points this season (two each at home against the Houston Dynamo and Toronto FC) just by going in too hard on a challenge and taking out an attacker without necessity. I imagine that body control is a typical problem for giant 20-year old athletes with more muscles than they know what to do with.
* * *
Reverse
B&RU: How are the Sounders balancing MLS and CCL responsibilities? Will we be seeing your best lineup on Saturday?
SaH: I don't know that the Sounders have a "best" lineup. For players with 9 or more starts in all competitions they go 19 deep. Eight of those players have three or more goals. Getting strong performances from 7 different defenders as well as 7 different forwards/wide mids that can score gives Seattle flexibility in dealing with injury (Steve Zakuani, O'Brian White), card situations (Jhon Kennedy Hurtado, Servando Carrasco) and the three different tournaments. Mike Fucito, Jeff Parke and Osvaldo Alonso didn't play down in Costa Rica, while James Riley didn't start. There's plenty of talent still to start against United.
B&RU: The Sounders had quite possibly the greatest month of August in MLS history, but started off September on the wrong foot. Was the Real Salt Lake loss a sign of things to come, or just a blip on your freight train ride towards a multi-Cup season?
SaH: There's no reason the think that the RSL game was an indicator of any larger issues than several breaks going against the Sounders. How many games through the rest of Seattle's season will involve a missed penalty, Keller own goal and first half red card? While multi-Cups is the goal, there's still a long way to go for that. This is still going to be an incredible year even with only one Cup and a strong performance in both the regular season and CCL Group play. Multiple trophies would just make it historical.
B&RU: From trialist to MVP candidate, is Mauro Rosales going to be in Seattle long-term, or will he go on to bigger things once again after this season?
SaH: They've already started contract negotiations and all indications from either side is that an extension will happen. Rosales has a bit of loyalty to a team that gave him a chance when no other club was going to do so. He's also earned himself a hefty paycheck. Since the Sounders seem to have opened significant cap space for 2012 they will have the opportunity to keep him at a much bigger number and still add more talent with the open 3rd DP slot that they've paid for, but not yet used to actually play 3 at a time.

Is it typical for giant 20-year old athletes?
…or is it typical of DC keepers (Pat Onstad, Josh Wicks, Bill Hamid)?
I’ve known a lot of 20yo athletes who weren’t cheap douchebags trying to injure their opposition instead of blocking a shot. Can’t say the same of DC keeps.
With all due respect...
Your vitriol is misplaced. Hamid was being stupid in both instances rather than malicious. He shows every indication of being a class individual and while I am sympathetic to your opinion of Wicks, you guys keep around a class A douchebag in Freddy Montero so that sympathy is limited. Thankfully you guys got rid of Ljunberg otherwise it would be easier to dislike your team. That said I tend to agree with Martin that our 16 year rivalry with “The Best Team Ever on Paper in MLS” carries a lot more hate than the one with the Sounders.

Falling over easily is exactly the same as being violent
thanks for that

I've never heard anyone accuse Charlie Davies of being violent...
Oh, nevermind. I see what you were saying.
Hamid, and Wicks/Montero
1. Nobody’s ever accused Hamid of going in dirty on those challenges. The Toronto tackle was a miscommunication between him and Brandon McDonald, which put Hamid in an awkward position; the Houston one was him coming a little too hard for the ball and Brian Ching putting himself in the way to draw a penalty. That’s not violence.
2. Josh Wicks had a big temper problem, but Montero’s no saint. It’s not his diving that turned me against him, it was his cheap off-the-ball antics. Wicks’ stomp was inexcusable, but Montero gave him an extracurricular knee to the head not 10 minutes earlier. Montero is a clever dude (with the ball and without), and he knows how to bait people into retaliating without getting caught himself; to pretend otherwise is a little bit silly.

Montero addendum
I should add that Montero seems to have been on better behavior the last couple years, and when he’s not engaging in extracurricular hijinx, he tends to be one of the more exciting players in the league.

Care to clarify
What you mean by extracurricular hijinx?
Right
And that’s exactly why I asked, because if I were wanting to somehow claim the higher moral ground, slandering someone by implying a character trait on the basis of a single incident, the circumstances of which are not known to the general public and in which no charges were brought, would be about the direct opposite of the right way to go about it. Bringing that old-school “class”, I guess.
Who's claiming any ground?
I called a pox on both houses and gave Montero credit for shedding the behavior that caused me to dislike him in the first place. Slow your roll, dude -no need to attack me or my “class” here over an impression I have of a guy stemming back 2+ years.

I'll readily give you credit
For giving credit, but why undermine it by bringing up something that has no bearing whatsoever on the subject at hand? It bugs the crap, not just in relation to Montero but across the board; like people who can’t talk about Andreea Raducan or Alain Baxter without implying they’re druggies (or for that matter, to bring it back closer to home, Jon Conway and Jeff Parke). We’re here to talk about football, not gossipmonger; the issue with Wicks wasn’t necessarily that he had anger issues, it was that he took them out on the pitch, and if you think there’s a case to be made against Montero’s on-field antics, complain away. Anything else is and should remain the exclusive domain of the gutter press.
I was only referring to on-field antics
I use “extracurricular” to mean stuff on-field but outside of the game (like the apparent cheap shots). Sorry that wasn’t clear.

Besides the whole driving his knee into a keepers' head thing?
Montero was at the center of more than one kerfluffle during his first year in Seattle, generally because he seemed to like to kick people, or at least give them love-taps with his lower extremities, even after the whistle.
My impression of him isn’t that dissimilar from what I heard a lot of non-DC fans saying about Fred when he first came to the league – like Fred, though, it looks like Montero has grown up a bit since that first season and knocked off the silly stuff.

@Dave, Not a direct comparison...
Thanks for misconstruing my statement. We had Wicks for less than a season and yet he defines mrbs opinion of every single recent DC goalkeeper. My point was that you guys have a franchise player that does not seem from a distance to be a particularly nice or classy guy. This is not a direct comparison, but a point that most teams have players that do not hold themselves to the greatest standards of control, sportsmanship, etc. Those like Davies and Wicks who have done one or two blatant wrongs on the field are rightly demonized, but those who consistently get away with lesser things are not generally disliked by home fans even if they may deserve it.

Every time we play DC, I am reminded of how bitter I am for not somehow drafting Pontius somehow
Very disappointed he is injured, but glad to not face him
We may not have a "best lineup..."
…but I think we have a better lineup with JKH in the game. I’m fearful that crazy red card is going to have more ill effects, especially given the way DC scored during that debacle in May. Of course, JKH played in that game… so who knows…
Fullback is probably the position I'm most comfortable with not having a starter
I’m fine with Ianni/Parke and we have quite a few other players who have filled in that situation as needed.
Or Scott/Parke
Scott has played very well in the CB position. For me he seems a little sketchier as a fullback although he has had a few good games there (like against Dallas).
Either way I don’t think the defense is a huge drop off with Ianni or Scott from Hurtado.
I would be stunned
Ianni as DMid seems to have disappeared.
Alonso is going to play

Is Alonso suspended?
I seem to remember hearing his late card against RSL meant he has to miss a game for accumulation.

That was his 7th, not 8th card
He is suspended his next yellow.
Same with Friberg, Wahl, Hurtado and Montero.

I think Ianni is a last resort at CDM.
If Alonso or Carrasco is not playing there I would guess Sanyang gets that spot.
With Evans and Seamon being ahead of Ianni too

Ianni will probably never play CDM for the Sounders again
You can just about take that to the bank. He’s a solid CB. Probably a decent option at FB. But he was a disaster at CDM.

I'm not sure I'd go so far
As to describe him as having played very well there. He’s a wrecking ball against aerial stuff, but when it’s to feet he sometimes seems to have trouble adjusting to it, which is something CB’s tends to get punished for over time.
DC United has pretty great fans. I hope their stadium situation gets worked out, but they make RFK a fun place.
I hope all their fans are crying this weekend.
I used to live in DC
And go to the games at RFK during the previous Freddy Adu era. The place is actually a ton of fun and is super-easy to get to. However, I’ve heard maintenance has really gone downhill since then.
The raccoons and spiders are doing a great job at maintenance

DC
are my favorite east coast fans. I feel bad about their stadium. If anyone deserved a new stadium it was DC not NYRB.
With that said, the Wicks incident will probalby always stick with me and not like their team even though he was only there a little bit. It is my oldest daughters earliest memory of watching soccer too. she is 5 now. She learned what a red card is that day and why you get them. She still talks about ‘that guy that stepped on freddy montero’. :)
Scary
It is scary and exciting when you realize how close the Sounders are to having a season the whole world would notice, and how close they are to having season that only the people posting here will even remember.
Can’t wait for DC.
ps. Everyone talks about Seattle fans being annoying, I don’ t get it. DC fans seem like the ones that assumed they would be a dynasty forever. NEVER seen a Sounder fan assume that.
Yeah we definitely developed a sense of entitlement from both “dynastic periods”, however we’ve been substantially humbled in the past 3 seasons. Further it would not surprise me if that assumption of “eternal” dominance developed in a significant bloc of Sounders fans after another season or two of success. The “We win trophies” campaign (which I assume is part of what you are referring to) was more a delusion of the front office than a feeling shared by the majority of the fans at that point. We are happy to be back in the playoff discussion, but still recognize that the Teams of 1996-1999 and 2004-2007 are gone and cannot be easily recreated in a short period of time (thus rebuilding primarily with young talent rather than more crap Central/South American signings).

DCU has some great assets
It’s in a great city for you soccer talent and plenty of young professionals which have formed the backbone of success in the recent expansion teams. It’s just sad that the sorry state of RFK is holding the club back.

Nobody in the rest of the world gives half a damn about the MLS or the CCL
Thinking that they do or will is pure, unfettered arrogance.
